Raymond turns to the rest of the class. "Anyone recall seeing anything red, that felt out of place? How Cain got to the fourth floor is bothering me too. I doubt the existence of some secret passage, but I don't doubt Veronica's abilities. Something happened, and Cain went right on by. I didn't see him on the Second floor at all, though. Which bothers me."

"No, that's unlikely." Simon responds, "He was four floors down from where that box was. I don't care how good his hearing is, there's no way he heard it from four floors down if Veronica didn't.
"And even if he had heard it, the sound came from above him. I doubt it would have led him to find the passageway. If he heard someone screaming, he'd be more likely to just go up by the stairs then scour the storage room for a faster way. Not only that, but the knife trap relied on him hearing it from the headmaster's office. He wouldn't have thought to open that door, unless the box was used multiple times!"
