The group decides to try out Cooper's experiment. Cooper takes the power-stained cloth and holds it underneath the shaded area under the tree, seeing if anything would happen.

As Amory deduced, the powder seems to gently sparkle and shimmer, giving off a vaguely golden hue.

"I'm still inclined to believe Cooper's our man with a gun, but if that's true I doubt he's the one who did... whatever it was, that happened to Jonas. André's safe, unless he's lying and someone used that powder on him in self defence. Seems like a stretch to me, though. Not saying he can't be a 'Coven' but he's not Jonas's killer I reckon."

"And did anything else peculiar happen to anyone the night of the murders? Professor Taylor was killed, and I assume it was someone else who... uh, powdered André. Those seem like things that this Coven would do--debilitating someone and murdering another--but we have only two accounts of something happening to someone, and there are three Coven remaining, apparently. Was one simply not doing anything that night?"

André spread his hands in a shrug "Yeah there isn't too much to go on my perceptive young master but how about this." André crossed his arms and jerked his head towards the body of William "Our resident incubus there was an actor, a career that requires no small amount of charm and allure...no?"

He raised one hand to cup his chin in thought "No doubt an incubus would need the same skills no?" he walked idly over to the body of William "And yet here he is...flesh and blood and still...human." he gave a body a kick for the hell of it. "So maybe the Coven are just humans who turn their natural talents towards the arcane?" he looked back at the others.

"With that line of thinking then at least one of the Coven would be from a chemistry-related profession based on the powder attack, so poor Amory could be suspicious along that angle."

Pétur's eyebrows raised to an almost comical height at the sudden attention. "My thinking is that whoever did William in is someone we don't want to hang by mistake. I don't like saying it but a gun would come in pretty handy right about now. Or... are you suggesting we need to watch out for ourselves? Pétur was about to respond to the accusation when Forsythia interjected with another outlandish claim, throwing his mind for a loop. "Dear lord..." he muttered, clutching his head wearily.

"Cooper, if you're so easily swayed, how about I ask you, please, not to hang me? Not much an old man like me can do if you all set your mind on it," he said, apparently serious. Then he let out a heavy sigh. "If you're looking for me to prove my innocence, then... well, show me your proof, I'll do the best I can to refute it."

“Alright calm down just a joke. But listen, this is a witch hunt, this is not exactly the time for proof. I won’t force you guys to feel the way I do but if we had to vote right now, he’s my guy. That’s just my guy.”

He looked at all the others at once. “It’s always better to lynch than no-lynch. The reward of hitting a witch is far worth the risk of mislynching a townie. Unless we’re down to very low numbers, which we’re not, we need to try to get the witches. So yeah if I don’t have proof that anybody did it by the end of this trial, I’m going to do the smart thing and take that risk.”
