Wasn't it because P1 and P2 (and P2: EP or whatever) were incredibly different from P3 and P4? P1 and P2 were a ton more dark than the other two, even if P3 is listed as Mature and very dark, but the first two are just "worse" if you will. The mechanics in terms of battle are vastly different.
In P2, at least, the battle system was so different, you could talk to the demons you were fighting and form contracts with them. Each character practically had the wild card, unlike just the main protagonist in P3 and P4, and similar. I got lost with the battle system at first.
Also, P3 implemented Social Links. So I guess that hit with a lot of people.
I dunno, they're nice but... well, as long as the characters are interesting...

PS: Also, P3 and P4 had on-screen monsters, compared to P2, which had a ridiculous random encounter rate. 3 steps, WHOA, you're in a battle.

Well that's not so bad, as nice as Yukiko was I felt it would be too heartless to leave Rise crying in the rain. Then it's like "HUGS MEAN YOU LOVE HER!" and I just sigh.
Also don't know who it was who said it, but you can totally romance Chie just like any other girl. Do well enough you'll get her all blushy and max it out for the cutscene in the room where you just hang out. It's no less romancey than the other ones.
