Lynde looks more fammilar with a weapon then might be first imagined, but the East had mandatory military service at the age of 18, and Lynde had served his before the adoption.

"The explosives are interesting," he said eyeing them. " But I am more interested in how people think we should proceed. I think we should figure out how these closed rooms have occured as I said. But I am open to ideas."

“Alright then, let’s head to dinner.” Someone unceremoniously and anticlimactically decided.

“Oh and Miss Pfeiffer?” Juna interrupted. “You have a phone call.”

“Is it my office?”

“He wouldn’t say.”

Mia seemed surprised, but told everyone to not wait for her as they got started.

----------

Mia headed to her room, where the call had already been forwarded to.

"Hello?"

"..."

"Hello?!"

"Miss Fischer?" It was clearly a man's voice on the other end of the line.

Fischer? It must be the Ministry. But how do they know I’m here? Wait, would they really be so stupid to use my name on the phone?

"Excuse me? I think you have the wrong number."

"Don't play dumb with me." His tone suddenly got hostile and aggressive. A sense of apprehension began clutching Mia's heart, and she began to think that she had actually heard this voice before.

"W-Who is this?! I'm hanging up!"

"I wouldn't do that if I were you..... Staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasi."

It was only then that Mia realized where she had heard this childish voice before.

"Gid-Gideon?!"

The group collectively carried the crate of C4 to the cliffside and dumped it in the ocean.

When the group had returned to the foyer, a new object had caught their eye. It was a newspaper--a copy of Bild dated the 28th. It detailed a hit and run that occurred in Germany August 4th, 1987. A mechanic was recently busted for an unrelated crime, and confessed to destroying a car belonging to Friedrich von Brandauer the day after.

… there doesn’t appear to be any new information beyond what the Detektiv had told them earlier. But scrawled on the front of the newspaper in red ink is ‘I KNOW WHO YOU ARE’. It seems like anybody in the room could've had an opportunity to place this on the table.

"Oh my... Did someone leave this here before we left?" Meta crouches down unsteadily and adjusts her glasses to take in the words in the article.

She stands up straight, and turns towards Christof. "Detektiv, do you care to provide comment? This seems like part of your investigation, is it not?" She loosens her jaw, reading it once again for her understanding, "Regardless, it seems that the killer has an ax to grind with the culprit from this article. Do you all agree?"

Fritz had been struggling to grapple with the concept of featuring explosives in a story without blowing anything up, but the newspaper finally brought him back to reality.

“Well, this hardly seems appropriate,” he said, “Are we stooping to threats now, Detektiv? If you’re trying to make me confess, creepy messages aren’t going to cut it. I still had nothing to do with that accident.”

"Yet your car did," Verrier noted. "Are you really so sure it was stolen by some... random ne'er-do-well? Isn't it far more likely the thief was someone closer to you, someone who had access to wherever the car was being kept?" He was normally quite respectful towards Fritz, due to being a fan of his work. This issue seemed to have upset him somehow, so he was more persistent than usual.

"It's almost like making situations worse is written in your blood," Juna remarked, rubbing her forearm; she was evidently more stressed and on edge now, "What Verrier said makes sense to me. Is there a point in hiding things any longer?" The servant asked with an irked tone.

“Wait, thats my copy,” The detektiv exclaimed, “someone must’ve stolen it from my case! I’d never deface evidence like that! If this is someone trying to stop my investigation,” he pauses, staring deliberately at Fritz, “then I can assure you it will not work! I suppose the real question is who the threat is for though, me, or the driver...”

"This could be just an opportunist, or maybe a note from the killer..." Ingrid thought out loud, skimming the newspaper. "If it is from the killer, it could be a clue towards motive."

Meta gives Fritz a pitying look, "Well, as to be expected from the hard-hitting journalism of die Bild. I didn't think I would live to see the day that rag could be used as evidence by a serious Detektiv." She hands the newspaper to anyone else who wants it.

"Ingrid, do you suppose knowing the motives of our killer could help us? Who would you exclude from suspicion if this newspaper article is part of the motive and our killer left this clue?"

Edna seemed to be freaking out a lot over the newspaper, though she couldn't muster up the guts to actually say something. She didn't seem well at all though.

"Guys, is-- is the newspaper really worth discussing? Could it just be something the killer is trying to use to scare us? I mean, Grandfather, Julia, and Uncle Harley are all dead. We... we need to figure out who did this, first and foremost. We HAVE to. I don't... I don't want anyone else to die."

Erik, who was holding his rifle in the most proper way someone not trained in firearms could, gave a firm nod.

"That might be difficult for us to achieve, cousin." Agnes nods slowly, agreeing with her own words. "It is hard to do much of anything with a killer breathing down our necks. The moment we're apart, that gives the killer the chance to strike yet again..."

"Hmm... I suppose we could split off into larger groups, if we really wanted to... I doubt the killer could turn on four sheep at once..." Agnes mumbled to herself, putting a hand on her chin.

Meta nods her head in thought, "Our killer has only gone after us in situations with few witnesses and everything could be the work of only one individual. Though, we should also consider that Albrecht's killer wasn't the same as this serial killer from the night."

Well, I figure its probably directed more at the driver, but it since there are only a few of us connected to this case I can't really rule anything out yet. Although on second thought, the whole reason I'm here is to investigate the hit-and-run, which means I don't know who did it-- although I have my theories," he says, glaring at Friedrich, "so I couldn't have left the note."

"The car wasn't simply stolen though, Mr. Friedrich. A man was killed, and that death was covered up. If we go by my theory, regarding Ms. Julia's death, then the only pre-planned murders so far would be those of Mr. Albrecht and Mr. Harley, both of whom are Brandauers. Obviously the family is being targeted, of that much we can all be certain, but I think my defaced newspaper may shine a light on our motive." the detektive mused before pausing for dramatic effect, keenly aware that the post was dragging on at this point.

"Perhaps the victim in this hit and run is a relative of our killer. Unfortunately we don't know much about this victim, but we can safely assume he was not related to the Brandauers, meaning that only one of the others could have done it. That leaves Miss Mia, Miss Juna, Miss Jolina, Ms. Meta, Dr. Verrier, and of course myself, but I have already demonstrated my own innocence in the most recent killings."

"Detektiv, you're the one who knows the most about this victim, so none of the rest of us can speak on the subject either. Erik's left eye twitched a bit, and he glared towards the detektiv, looking uncharacteristically upset.

"My father isn't guilty. I know you're still thinking that, but you're dead wrong. He has flaws, sure, but who doesn't? Either way, he's one of the best goddamn men I know, and that belief of mine isn't gonna change."

He let out an indignant huff, clenching his rifle a bit tighter than before.

"... I'm going to get some air in a bit. My head's just... getting all foggy, with all this going on. But... my father isn't guilty. I know that. So stop accusing him. ... Please."

With that, Erik stepped out of the room, rifle still in hand -- still calmly seething, but not noticably upset enough to storm out.

After Erik had left, Verrier turned to Fritz again, not willing to let go. "It's a common enough story. A young adult, not yet owning their own car, takes their parents' one for a joyride without permission. Do you... see where I'm going with this?"

The general rule was to not split up and completely stay together. Some people do leave the room occasionally and have brief periods where they’re unaccounted for, but overall nobody is gone too long.

When Erik leaves, Mia and Ingrid go after him. Jolina clutched her gun and glared suspiciously as they left.

Soon after, Raphael gets really mopey and sour about something. He briefly leaves the room at one point, and nobody even notices that he's gone for a while until everyone collectively realizes the mood is much less dour than unusual.

-------

Mia and Ingrid briefly talked to Erik on the second floor, but he insisted he wanted to be on his own and went into Harley’s bedroom. Ingrid wasn’t comfortable with this, but knowing she’d be able to keep an eye on the door made her feel better.

Mia and Ingrid walked to their bedroom and collapsed exhausted on the bed together. At one point Ingrid took a shower to get the sleep out of her.

Just as Mia unconsciously turned over and looked at the phone… it rang.

[Scene Music]

It shouldn’t have been possible. The phone lines were down. They knew that from when they tried to call the hospital earlier.

No, it was possible that that was a lie. It was also possible that only the external line was down and she was just getting a call from another room in the house.

She cautiously picked it up, “Hello?”

“Miss Fischer?” It was Gideon’s voice once again.

Mia immediately hung it up, and immediately after the phone rang again. If she kept this up, he would keep calling and Ingrid would hear. She trusted Ingrid more than anything, but could she trust her with this?

Mia felt she had no choice so she quickly picked it up, shouted at ‘Gideon’ that she would take his call as soon as Ingrid left the room, and then hung up.

Shortly after, Ingrid got out of the shower. Mia made up an excuse that she wasn’t feeling well and wanted to be left alone. Ingrid couldn’t accept this, but Mia absolutely insisted. There was a time to tell Ingrid, and it was not now. Ultimately, Ingrid relented. Worst came to worst, Mia had the rifle...

Ingrid exited the room, almost considering going back to the foyer. But instead, she sits herself outside of the room. The bedrooms were mostly soundproof, but she’d at least be able to be right nearby if Mia screamed. She also had view of Harley's bedroom.

Inside Agnes' room, the phone rang again. Mia felt her chest tighten. Why was this happening now? Why here? Why him?

She picked it up.

“Good, good.” The man laughed. “Now listen to what I have to say...”

...

7:00 AM

In the foyer: Edna, Agnes, Lynde, Fritz, Cici, Meta, Heinrich, Verrier, Juna, Jolina, Christof
Outside the foyer: Erik, Raphael, Mia, Ingrid

The group in the foyer was getting impatient and nervous. The other four had been gone for far too long. While people had been able to come and go, this was too much cause for concern. The only thing they knew is that the current people in the foyer could completely account for each other's alibis from 6-7 AM.

"Perhaps we should play a game of Scotland Yard to pass the time?", the detektive offers, hoping to cut the palpable tension in the room. "Should we go see if the others would like to play as well? It has been quite a while since we've heard from them, especially Mr. Erik and Mr. Raphael. Say, when is the last time anyone has seen Mr. Raphael?"

Everybody headed around the house to look. Some people even went outside. Lynde went to the guest house ahead of everyone, and some people went to catch up with him.

Ingrid was easy enough to find in the hallway, and she happily announced that Erik and Mia had not left their rooms. Ingrid stood up, deciding to check on Mia.

Spoiler: February 29, 1984
[Scene Music]

Ingrid and Mia had just shared a wonderful dinner together to celebrate her birthday. It was a quiet night, which was exactly what Ingrid had wanted.

Ingrid was laughing happily, stumbling to the front door of her house. She was about to open it when…

“Mia… you better tell me there isn’t a surprise party in there.”

Mia had a face of shock, but maybe a bit too exaggerated. “W-What? No way.”

Ingrid stared Mia down, causing her to buckle.

“Sigh, let me guess. You put a piece of paper in the front door before we left?”

“Yup. And it’s not there anymore.”

Mia was ashamed to have fallen for such a simple trick again. Though of course it was impossible to consider the insanity of tagging every door you leave.

“You know I hate surprise parties.”

“Ok, it’s not a surprise party. But it is a surprise, and I promise you’ll enjoy it.”

Ingrid was the one to sigh this time. But reluctantly, she unlocked the door.

Ingrid verified that the tape she had put on Agnes’ bedroom door was still sealed. Harley’s was sealed too of course. It was a common trick, and her best one. The sight of it gave Ingrid the slightest of hopes. The room was on the second floor, there was no need to worry that the window was climbed through. And yet, there was an impending sense of dread in the air that any trope savvy mystery fan would not be able to shake away. Ingrid opened the door to Agnes' room, breaking the tape...

[Scene Music]

Mia almost looked peaceful in her crumpled form on the floor. One could even mistake her for being alive if not for the blood pooling around her head. But when they checked her pulse, her body was already cooling to the touch. She was dead.

Juna, trembling slightly, made her way towards some support -- a nearby table in the room -- and grabs the side of it with her hands while keeping her eyes fixated on the body. At this point, this was a grim normality, but it was hard to hide her evident terror.

The tape had already been verified to be SEALED but of course Fritz didn't notice it, and broke it as he opened the door.

The room was empty. The window was open however. Looking outside, you could see that one could use the roof of the porch to break their fall as they head outside the house. The dent in the snow on the porch roof seems to indicate Erik may have done just that.

Ingrid stood at the doorway for a moment, before taking a few dazed steps towards Mia. She kneeled next to the corpse and put a trembling hand on the pool of blood around her head. She didn't even know why she did it, but the feeling of the blood on her palm finally snapped something in her.

"... That's it." she sobbed. "You did it. One of you took the last family I had left..."

Christof reads the room for once and quietly pulls a sheet from his case, placing it over the body. He also pulls out a roll of crime scene tape, looks around, sighs, and puts it away again.

"Dr. Verrier, I'm sorry to ask again, but would you please examine the body? I can't seem to determine a cause of death this time." he says, pulling the smaller medical examiner's case out.

"Someone needs to go check on Mr. Erik and Mr. Raphael immediately, we need to make sure there aren't any other victims, let alone suspects."

"An explanation..." Ingrid repeated looking up to glare at Christof. "The last person on this island I could trust is dead, and you want an explanation from me...?"

"... Yeah. There's an explanation here. It's so damn simple too."

"No!" Edna shrieked, seeing the body. She seemed legitimately distressed for Ingrid. "Please, Detektiv, I implore you to stop yourself here. I can vouch for Ingrid, s-she would never do this... Not to her..."

She gulped. "N-not to her roommate", she spoke unsteadily.
