“I can’t just sit still like this,” Zhang mumbles, fidgeting in her cell. “Isn’t there something we can do?”

“There just might be,” Monk replies, “Have you all taken a gander around your cells, by chance? Some of the items inside are a little odd. Perhaps if we take a closer look, we can escape.”

“Why would our captors lock us up with keys to free ourselves?” Mao asks.

“Obviously because they want us to claw our way out,” Fujisaki says, “If they just wanted to keep us locked in these cages, there wasn’t any point to these bracelets.”

“In that case, whatever awaits outside may be more dangerous than what’s in these cells,” the bandaged woman replies with a disturbing chuckle. “It appears to me that escaping would be far too simple. Our captors likely left traps further in the facility for the sake of their own twisted pleasure.”

“No fucking point in hanging out here till we starve to death though,” Mei remarks, standing with her back against the bars. “Especially if they are coming to torture us.”

“Exactly. We might as well try,” Amandi adds, “Looks like we’ll have to…

The Dungeon:

Each member of the group is locked in their own individual cell. Six cells are on opposing sides, with a corridor running through the middle. Starting with Taikong, everyone is ordered according to their zodiac sign, with the Dragon and Snake rooms left empty.

On one side of the corridor is a door with [鸡] (Rooster) painted over it in red. The other side has a large, gilded door which has been left slightly ajar. That seems to be the group’s exit.

But first, they’ll have to get everyone out of the cells.

[Each of you can investigate the items in your respective cell. If you discover a puzzle, you may attempt to solve it yourself or post it in the thread for advice from others. Every player will receive a list of the items in their room shortly. I recommend keeping a public list of what people find in each room!

For now, players can only solve puzzles in their cell. If this slows the puzzle room down, this rule may change.

Fujisaki clangs his bracelet against his cell bars, in an attempt to get everyone’s attention.

“I’ve found some things.” He calls out, loudly. “A small little statue. Of a dragon. Moving it’s tail, a little laser pointer has fallen out of its mouth.”

He then pauses for a moment. “If this is of any use to any of you, let me know. Perhaps I can shine it on something from my cell.”

A wave from Dr. Uwem's cane was enough to get some people's attention.

"Hey, so, it look like I'm stuck in here. Didn't find anything useful... The only point of interest I noted was the medicine cabinet in my cell. It's locked with a keyhole on the handle. Let me know if any of you find a key that looks like it can open the medicine cabinet." The doctor said loudly for the others to hear.

After a quick moment examining her room, Amethyst came back to the front of her cell holding a newspaper. "I have a computer and a newspaper here. The computer needs two passwords, one labeled A and one B, and the newspaper has an article highlighted..."

She tried to show it through the bars, but no one could really get a good look at it. "It's from four years ago, back when that American ambassador got killed during the Spring Festival Gala. It mentions the Chinese ambassador at the time: Mao Delan. You know why this would be here, general?"

"Not sure what else from this could be relevant. The American was named Benedict Clarkson, killed by a fireworks crate left on stage, 18 people declared dead..."

Spoiler: Political Assassination Incinerates New Years’ Revelry

[The date is mysterious removed but everyone knows when it happened it was like four years ago]

The Spring Festival is a beloved time of celebration for our people. Millions flocked to Beijing last night to be reunited with their family and celebrate the advent of the Year of the Monkey, but the event would instead prove to be a disastrous start to the year.

As part of the yearly televised Spring Festival Gala, a dance performance was hosted at the Bird’s Nest Stadium. Intended to be a show of goodwill between China and the United States a rocky series of trade deals reached a settlement, the event hosted hundreds of performers melding traditional dances from the two countries in one breathtaking performance. They were joined by numerous singers and two orchestras. A fireworks show was planned to round out the event.

As the performance approached its end, an onscreen countdown appeared to usher in the finale at midnight. Even the Chinese and American ambassadors, seated at opposite ends of the stadium, shouted each number with the enthusiastic crowd.

However, rather than bringing a glorious cheer, the countdown heralded only a deafening explosion as a case of fireworks left on the American stage detonated. Trails of light spiderwebbed through the stadium as missiles slammed into the crowd. The televised event was immediately pulled from the signals, but hundreds of people may have witnessed the initial blast.

As of now, the exact body count is uncertain. 18 people have been declared dead, among them Benedict Clarkson, the American ambassador to China who was seated on the stage where the crate exploded. Many more went missing in the subsequent rush to escape the stadium.

The president of the United States is already declaring the event an assassination plotted by the Chinese government. At the very least, it was clearly the result of foul play. Officials have stated there was no reason for the crate to have been left on that stage.

We interviewed the Chinese ambassador to the United States, Mao Delan. According to him, “the attack was by no means a coordinated effort by our government. The Spring Festival is an important time for all of us. We’re as horrified as the rest of the world.”

“However, if the Americans want to turn this into a conflict, I say go right ahead, if they’ve got the guts.” Mao added. “The Year of the Monkey is about achieving your dreams through quick wit and cunning. We'll come up with brilliant strategies that will bring this war to a swift end.”

"Well this should hardly be news for anybody paying attention the past four years." Mao laughed--well it was more of a chuckle but given his stern demeanor it was a rare sigh. "Though I can't blame anyone for not recognizing me--I always did have a face for the radio."

His face went serious again. "Though the article did fail to mention the Chinese citizens who died as well. It was nothing more than a freak terrorist event that the the Americans took as an opportunity."

He then went to examining the items in his cell and sharing his findings with the group. There was a keyhole on the outside of his cell door for one. He also had a a large Chinese flag is hanging vertically behind him, possible soaked in gasoline. A rope was traveling from beneath the flag, down across the floor, out the cell door. It ended right at the hallway.

There's also a pipe like a gutter sticking out of the bottom of the brick wall. Nothing appears to be inside but it seems to turn right in the direction of Amandi’s cell.

"There's a golden decal in here too, with a red gem in the center. It looks like there's a spot to put something in it, too. And there's also a puzzle on the wall in here. It looks like some kind of number puzzle, but it looks incomplete..."

She must be able to see through them.

"That incident... was the one that started this entire war." Monk grimaced silently. "Hard to believe it's been so long since this shitfest started..." He shook his head, turning back to examine his room.

He showed up a few minutes later. "Well, there's not much here, I am afraid. There's a satchel and a mounted rifle, mainly. The latter strikes me as important because, well..." He smirked. "From here, I can see into the Snake room. There's an outline of a woman on the wall there, and there's four red crosshairs painted on different parts of her body. I'm going to have to shoot at her, most likely", he said simply. "Dunno what it'll do but I doubt it to be a wee coincidence, eh?" He gave a laugh, turning around to go back into his cell for a more thorough examination.

Monk strolled back out shortly after, blatantly double posting like a scoundrel. "Hey... X, was it?" He addressed the woman with the Dog bracelet. "I've found a partial solution for your puzzle. Most of it, anyway."

"As you can see, I wrote some of the words backwards because it didn't seem to work if I did it normally. The SIX and TWO would meet no matter what in that case and it wouldn't be right. This seems to take care of everything nicely, though. I haven't written down where NINE and TEN go but you should be able to tell where they are. I just left them as is because there's more than one way for them to be positioned. TEN could be written vertically and horizontally forwards as well as horizontally backwards, and NINE can be written either backwards or forwards horizontally. I decided to leave them ambiguous since the order might matter when you're doing the path thing. ...Come to think of it, you could also reverse TWO or SEVEN as well without changing much, so that might be handy to keep in mind."

Zhang gave the article a once over but she didn't need to read it in detail. She remembered it well enough. "What a dark day that was..." she muttered distantly before passing it along to the next cell.

"I have a tapestry in my cell with a small puzzle underneath it. It looks like a Sudoku of some sort but I think it's missing something." she said pulling her puzzle from the wall and sliding it along so others could see it as well.

"Aside from that there's a grate here into my son's cell. I'm going to try and get it off but I may need a screwdriver."

As the passed-around newspaper reached him, Sun Taikong gave it a quick glance before passing it on with a wince. "Yeah I'm well aware of everything that happened that night, no need to pick at old wounds."

His examination of his cell hadn't revealed much so far. "There's a map in here," he explained. "A map of the world. Aimed at children, for some reason. I'll just keep searching, maybe I'll find something under the bed." He seemed to be in higher spirits now that they were working towards something.

"Still, 'Patient X' huh? Sorry, but, you must admit that's a rather... significant-sounding name. How can you be so sure there's few people who would be interested in you? You're straight out of a conspiracy-laden spy drama!"

Monk came back from investigating his cell further. From the looks of things, he had what appeared to be a gun in his hand. The expression on his face was oddly grim.

He said nothing. He simply looked up in front of him, holding the gun straight, and fired.

Sun Taikong let out a yell. A crash could be heard as he fell into the bed frame, followed by some cursing. "Give us a warning before you start firing a fucking gun in an enclosed area!" he yelled. "That was quite something. I found this ol' story about a murder 23 years ago and had to figure out how to replicate it to get that key. Seems my reading skills are gettin' a bit rusty, though..."

"In other news, turns out that my cell door is actually ajar", he suddenly declared. "But the only thing holding it in place is this combination lock. I think it requires an eight letter password to unlock. If anyone gets anything like that, tell me so I can get out of here, yeah?" He smirked.

Some metal clanging, the sound of an "Asshole!" being yelled following the gunshot and a few minutes later, Mei comes up to the cell door with a poster full of crosshairs. "There's this and a six-letter alphabetical password screen. What the fuck is this poster for, though? It has six crosshairs... maybe it goes on the map, and the country names give us a code?" She shrugs, taking a deep look at the poster in the meantime.

The key is much too small to unlock Mao’s cell. Sticking to his backup plan, he hands the key to Amandi through the cell bars.
