At around this tome, Suyin’s group enters the foyer from the basement. Amethyst is holding the map she found in front of her as the group heads for the other hallway, but Fujisaki calls them over.

“Hey, we found something in here,” he says, “Come take a look.”

Once the group approaches, Amandi explains the nature of the battle they discovered to them.

"This game makes almost everything Cat has built completely irrelevant. It is interesting that Cat chose the teams. Perhaps a certain outcome is expected. Who does the Cat want to win I wonder? It has given a huge privilege to Dr. Uwem, the Dragon, and the Horse. All of the rest of us are pawns. Did Cat leave a method to circumvent this, or is it too important to skip?" X folds her arms, she doesn't seem particularly nervous. In fact, she has a small smile.

"The leaders still need to participate," Fujisaki remarks. "Though they only need to win one, and one of them will not participate at all. It would be relatively stress-free, I believe."

"I wonder what sets them apart from us. Why when they are singled out, it is for their benefit, but when I sit on one throne..." Fujisaki grumbles and mutters to himself.

"So what do we do?" X asks, a bandaged finger at her lips. "I am content to play once we are ready. It is unnecessarily cruel, but it is as fair as anything else here. Perhaps Cat is simply another monster after all, willing to grind us into red paste. We should use our time to exhaust our options while we have it."

"Th-thats not fair! I can't play Go against a General!" Juanli stammered horrified at her first match up.

"P-please...I just have to get past this to see my son...this isn't fair." She cried falling to her knees in despair.

"The problem will be getting everyone in the pods. Nobody is very interested and only a few of us are comfortable with this game," X sighs deeply. "The Rabbit knows she will die to the Ox unless she takes a weapon."

"Fuck!" Suyin yelled, upset by the upcoming battle. "Come on, there's gotta be something else we can do instead of playing this stupid game! We've just gotta think..."

"Go is a game that artificial intelligences are especially good at, since it is a finite-state strategy game. Essentially, an opponent can use strategy to kill their opponent, or kill their opponent with their own hands."

X thinks for a little bit, and a thought seems to come to her, and she smiles. "Perhaps Cat's game is like a game of go. There are many possibilities, but the Cat has put very strict rules on the outcomes possible in this game. Perhaps, the Cat analyzes the board like in a game of go and can see exactly which states we will enter and with which probability. Perhaps this game only exists as a single probability in the eyes of the Cat to amuse itself with, and yet it has become our reality, but the Cat doesn't care as long as other, more interesting games could have existed," she paces and whispers quickly to herself, not paying mind to anybody else.

"Oh, but the Cat won't even be here to watch this game. But of course that was part of the plan. Choosing drain triggered the spectre to be extracted from The Rooster. I don't think that's possible, but Cat wants me to think it is, and it's certainly at least possible in the eyes of some people here. The Cat intended for the Snake to take hold in the computer, which means the Cat didn't care if their AI was up or down for this. In the end, the AI does nothing," X chuckles at her own conclusion, surprised. "It simply calculated possibilities and informed us of rules and now it is useless."

"Sheep, if there is another path, I don't expect anything better, otherwise the possibility of us playing this game would cease to exist."

Suddenly, a surprising figure appears on the monitor. It’s Yang, back from a long absence.

“Hello, players,” it says, “It seems you are having trouble with this battle. I strongly recommend you enter the pods within the next fifteen seconds, or you will receive a lethal injection through your bracelet.”

The machine begins to count down from fifteen robotically. The group exchanges looks of distress, but no one seems willing to tempt their captor. They each rush to a pod and pull the top open.

All the players climb into their sleeping pods. They pull the lids down, closing themselves off from the world.

The research lab grows silent. Eerie lights shine from within the sleeping pods. Laid out in rows, they seem to resemble graves. For several of them, those pods could become their tombs.

火战
(Battle of Fire)

And then, one after another, the pods open up. Pandemonium breaks out as the players climb out and scramble into the foyer.

“What was that?” Amethyst shouts.

“It felt like I was injected with something,” Monk says, “We all got into the pod, right?”

“I believe so,” Juanli replies, “Ugh, I feel like I’m going to vomit…”

Looking around the room, it seems everyone shares the same symptoms: a splitting headache and overwhelming nausea. What had happened to them?

The screen in the foyer lights up, this time revealing Yin. She stares off to the side, a solemn look on her face.

“I have bad news, everyone,” she says, “It seems you all have been injected with a dose of the poison meant to be given to the game’s losers.”

“W-We’ve been poisoned?” Taikong shouts, “Are we about to die?”

“Not yet,” Yin answers, “The dosage was significantly less than the intended fatal one. However, I believe you all will die in three hours.

“Three hours?” Sunny shouts, “B-But…the bomb in here still has eight hours! M-Mama!”

“There must be something we can do,” Amandi says, “Some way to counteract this illness. Surely there must be a solution!”

“I believe there is an antidote available,” Yin explains, “However, there is a specific protocol required to release it. Remember the young Japanese girl murdered in that old story? You will have to identify her killer. Additionally, you will need to identify the person who kidnapped Benedict Clarkson’s son.”

“Does that mean the culprit is here?” Suyin asks, “Maybe we can find information down in those archives…”

“You have way too much knowledge about the administered doses,” X replies, “You speak vaguely about ‘protocols’ as you list what sounds like a kidnapper’s demands. You know far too much, Yin. I posit that you gave us this death sentence for your own amusement.”

Yin pauses, staring blankly at X. Then a pleasant smile covers her face. It grows vaguely manic as her eyes stretch uncomfortably wide.

“Ha. Hahaha. Haha,” she says, “You have quite the imagination, X.”

And then the screen fades out.

[Addendum: The Armory will actually remain open and will likely be used. Also, the Fire Key can free anyone still alive.]

Juanli grabs her wrist and stares at her Bracelet in Horror. "T-THREE HOURS?" She stammered looking around wildly. "Look we can figure out the mystery later, but I'm not going to die without freeing my boy from that room. Come help me find that secret door while we think on this." She said going back to the hallway.

Sun Taikong glared angrily at the blank screen. "You tricked us! You hacked Yang's game!" He simmered for a few moments, before deflating. "I... guess this is better than most of us dying in a Go tournament though..."

He turned to Monk. "Is the story Yin was referring to the one you found in an article in your cell? Isn't it about time we all had a look at it?"

X smiles bitterly, " If course, even reduced to data, humans are humans. This is what you do when you have our lives in your hands."

"We know one thing, the Snake cares about the answers to both of these questions. She has a personal connection to them," she leans lazily against a wall, gripping her head. "So is the Dragon the son of the Snake? Perhaps that is why you will kill him last as well."

"T-The kidnapper...I don't even know if they are here. I remember what Bao looked like and he's not here. I don't know how we can give her an answer she'd want." Juanli murmured thinking fast.

She spun to face Amethyst "Miss Amethyst! You're good with computers right? Maybe you could...I don't know...hack into their system and access the protocol Yin talks about maybe? I saw that in a movie once."

Fujisaki grips clumps of his hair and groans, glancing across the room at every other player.

"Impossible." Fujisaki responds to X. "That... That just doesn't make any sense. Sunny is Chinese, isn't he?" He turns over to Junali for confirmation, despite this being a difficult thing to confirm.

"What can you say about Bao? Anything can help. Any sort of hint can push us forward."

"I...I don't know. I've always thought he was Chinese but it's not like they gave me a birth certificate." She stammered "As for Bao, there's not much else I can say. He work dark sunglasses and a suit, he commanded two other men when he dropped Sunny off at me, I...I think he was following orders though. He had a card with him...I think it probably had my address on it."

Juanli furrowed her brow in thought "I mean...the only person who'd really know me and be able to direct someone to me at that point would probably be Suyin." she said casting another scathing look at her sister "I'd still like to know how you knew about this whole thing sister."

“That’s absurd.” Mao immediately jumped to his wife’s defense. “She... she doesn’t have the authority do that.” It seems like he wanted to say something else, but decided against it. “Besides, she’s the one who brought up that he was kidnapped in the first place.”

X laughs from her spot by the wall, her voice echoing in the others' ears. "The Sheep is in a curious spot. I would posit that Cat knows the answers to the Snake's questions, which is why they were brought up earlier. The Cat knows most everything possible about us, and I would wager that the true culprit of the kidnapping is here in this room. Leaving the child with the Rabbit is an unusual decision. I can see the Sheep making that decision. I sense the Sheep will be on the back foot. Both her and the Ox would have the means and motive to perform a political kidnapping. Does anybody think I'm wrong?"

"Oh did she?" X asks Mao while he is speaking. "Nobody had heard of this until the Cat threw it to us. Only then did the Sheep discuss it with us. There is nothing wrong with her actions, but they don't smell particularly innocent."

"Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ!" Monk shouted, looking quite panicked now that the stakes were revealed. "Three hours? Are you kiddin' me?!"

"There's no time to waste", he decided, looking quite solemn. "Yeah, I had the paper about that. Found it in my room. Thought it was just part of a puzzle but it looked quite... graphic... so I hid it from you all. Now that it's relevant, though, I suppose I'd better reveal it. Before I do though, just one thing. Mr. Fujisaki, was it? Can I ask you how old you are?" He questioned the man suddenly.

“Eh?” Fujisaki turns over, with a bit of a confused look on his face.

“39. Don’t see why it matters. How about you?” He lets out a bit of a chuckle during probably the worst time ever.

He grits his teeth and groans a little. “Why? What’s it for?”

"Me? Heh, I'm 35", Monk chuckled. "Haven't thought about it in a long time, though. Just a number and all, y'know?"

Not answering Fujisaki's question of why it was relevant, Monk took out a paper from his coat and unfolded it. "Well, here we are. Storytime, everybody", he muttered grimly, before reading it out.

Quote:
23 years ago, a young girl was murdered on the outskirts of her village. The murderer left the body to rot and escaped to kill again. In order to begin the game, you must replicate the deed.

The crime occurred at 9:00 PM in an abandoned shed on the outskirts of town. The girl was entering the shed with her only friend, an older boy who never recovered from the trauma. The two of them held lanterns, and they were searching for something.

The girl was scared of ghosts. She heard a noise outside and kneeled on the floor to peek outside. There were ten boards of equal size spanning the wall horizontally. She pressed her hands on the wall and stared through a hole in the second.

Once her fears were quelled, the boy reminded her what they came here for. She climbed up on his shoulder and rested one elbow on his head, holding the lantern outward. She stretched her other arm, reaching for a string that dangled from the ceiling.

The killer fired his gun from outside the shed. It left a bullethole in the center of the sixth board from the top of the shed. The bullet continued to fly parallel to the ground.

As the bullet hit its mark, the girl’s hand seized up, grabbing the string. She fell off the boy’s shoulders and collapsed onto the dirt. At the other end of the string, the kite slipped from the rafters and drifted to her side.

The boy screamed and cried. He knelt by her body and listened to her gasping. He grabbed her by the hand as the light left his eyes.

The light flickered gently from the lantern still clutched in her hand. The boy stood up and roared like a dragon. He stepped over to the wall and threw a punch straight through the third board, sending splinters flying and leaving a sizable hole behind. It was the first blow of many.

He finished, putting the paper away and looked up again. "And there ya have it. That paper was important for a puzzle back in the cells. You remember how I said there was an outline of a woman on the wall of the Snake cell? I had to figure out where the girl was shot and then shoot at the outline in that exact place- which was the chest, in case you're wonderin'. So know y'know everything I know."

He tipped his hat slightly. "With that, let me make some observations here. Remember what Yin just told us?"

Quote:
“I believe there is an antidote available,” Yin explains, “However, there is a specific protocol required to release it. Remember the young Japanese girl murdered in that old story? You will have to identify her killer. Additionally, you will need to identify the person who kidnapped Benedict Clarkson’s son.”

"She said Japanese girl. But in that story, it was never specified where the murder happened or what nationality the girl was." He smirked. "So Snake knows more about this murder than even I do. Couple this with the fact that the outline where I had to shoot at was literally in her cell, and I think we can safely say she's tied to this crime somehow. Mostly likely through the victim, I'd imagine."

He turned to Fujisaki. "Anyway, that's why I asked for your age. The killin' took place 23 years ago, so that'd make you 16 back then. I was wonderin' if you were the "older boy" mentioned in the story, and that'd add up... But I'd like to add that the killer's age isn't specified either", he said darkly. "And if the murder happened in Japan, there was a good chance the killer was Japanese too. So if the killer is among us along with Sunny's kidnapper, you'd be our best bet, being the only Japanese here that we know of." He concluded.

"...Though the whole thing is strange to me anyway. As far as I can see, the two kids just went to retrieve a lost kite or something from a shed on a late night and then somebody shot at them? For what? The motive doesn't make sense, unless they were trespassin' and the owner thought there was a thief or somethin'." He shrugged.

"As for the kidnapping, I'm inclined to agree with X here. I think the good general was behind the entire thing, with maybe some assistance from his wife. She didn't tell us anythin' till we asked about it, and she would know who to give the baby to. Plus, it's just weird it took so long to just get the camera footage of what was apparently just Bao coming and stealing the baby and leavin'. As for Bao himself, it just makes sense that he was under the orders of someone with way more power than him, being just a goon in security. The good general fits that description best here among us all, does he not? He's been obviously quite on edge about the whole thing ever since it came up too." He laughed. "But that's just my two cents on the matter. I'm just a wanderer, so..." He gave a shrug, though it was clear he only meant it lightly.

Fujisaki, throughout Monk's reading, looks down at his feet, clearly disturbed by the words he's hearing.

"I never hurt her. Never." Fujisaki looks back up at Monk. One could almost see his glare through his sunglasses. "Don't you dare suggest that I did." He clenches his teeth and frowns.

"That article isn't right, anyways. She didn't die."

"You're right about one thing, Monk," Fujisaki lightens up after a few deep breaths. "The rest of that article rings true, it seems. While it got one thing wrong, everything else lines up. I was the boy, yes."

"That's... not much to go off of for solving a murder from over 20 years ago," Sun Taikong commented tensely. "I suppose we can start by ruling people out by age. It's unlikely to be anyone, say, 36 or younger."

He addressed Fujisaki, feeling a little awkward bringing the topic up. "If you were there, you have first-hand information from the scene. We might need anything you can tell us. How wide were the planks in the wall?"

Fujisaki ignores Sun Taikong because he's not sure if he should know the answer or not and begins to sweat a little at Monk's question.

"...And if she was?" It was hard to tell, but he did sound a little nervous. "What would that have to do with anything?"

X claps her hands softly, "That's quite outstanding, although you held all the cards, Pig. You're right, this means that the Snake is that girl, or at least some sort of data being used by the Cat to represent her. And so the Snake seeks her own killer. Dr. Uwem told me about Spectre Syndrome, which can occur in certain people when someone close to them dies. They will be followed by a spectre of their loved one which is actually a part of their own mind." She chuckles to herself at Fujisaki's resistance.

"This does blow a hole in my earlier theory, though. What interest would the Snake have in the Dragon?" She admits in a quiet voice.

"Why would anyone here kill-" Amethyst started, and then restarted after looking at Fujisaki. "Try to kill some random Japanese girl, though? Fujisaki and Yin are the only ones from that country anyways."

"Fujisaki, if you knew her, then what motive could there be?"

Mei taps her boot on the floor a few times, "The killer'd have to know that the girl would be on a man's shoulders beforehand and know her location through a solid wall, which seems impossible. Consider the height she'd be at."

"The reason I asked about the planks is that we might be able to get an idea of the killer's height from them," Sun Taikong explained. "Uh, that is, the attempted killer. The article said the bullet travelled parallel to the ground, so it was fired from the same elevation as the hole in the wall."

“That still doesn’t rule out the possibility they Fujisaki simply faced her and shot her himself.” Mao countered. “He clearly isn’t right in the head—he’s already claimed that Yin has been around this whole time, remember? And now he’s denying her death in the first place.”

"If we can rely on whoever investigated the case, then the bullet and its bullet-hole would match the gun being fired from outside of the shed," Sun Taikong countered. "It's certainly possible, from our current information, that he did it, but he'd be in the same boat as anyone else: he'd have needed to be in a position where his gun was level with the 6th plank in the wall. Yin, meanwhile, would have had to have been elevated for some other reason if she hadn't really been on Fujisaki's shoulder at the time."

“There was a hole in the third board as well. Created by Fujisaki’s fist, but possibly covering up something else.” Mao reminded. “The other bullet hole could be a red herring.”

"True. We don't have enough information here," Sun Taikong sighed. "How is the article sure only one bullet was fired? Where was the bullet found? We can only guess if we don't know basic facts like these."

Mao silently farted. He wafted his hand quickly to dissipate the smell away from him.

The smell reached Monk's nose. Thankfully he didn't mind because he was used to it. In fact he looked... a bit relieved? Ew.
