Emily thought for a second, "No i had not seen him beforehand, i came out of my dressing room a few minutes before the opera begun. The curtain was about to raise at that point."

"I see. Okay, I think that's going to just about do it for questioning at the time. I do, however, want to ask you one thing. I understand if you've told it to me before, but, that was indeed you on the stage when the victim was shot? If so, then I doubt I can get you a "Not Guilty" verdict. However, we can make an easy case by pleading "manslaughter" and that the circumstances were an accident." Derek was dead serious, and tapped his silver-rimmed glasses, as he tended to do when he discussed things with his clients. His attack plan was paramount knowledge for the client.

"I... understand your reasoning... But is it truly impossible to get an acquittal, considering that I had no idea the gun was loaded and no safe way to find out beforehand? It's certainly no fault of mine that Liszt is dead."

"No Richard was not needed on stage until about 10 minutes into the play. I entered before him, and he arrived on cue."

"That's what manslaughter is, Mr. Glinkirev. Involuntary manslaughter is when someone dies with no intention to do so. During the trial, it would be easy enough to argue that this clearly wasn't intentional. After all, it was a part of the script to shoot Mr. Liszt. We can further discuss the weapon, stage time, and proper weapon testing at the trial and prove to the judge that it would not be possible to test the weapon. From all that, it would be easy for this case to be ruled an accident rather then a murder."

"I think I'm starting to piece this together. I have a question for you. You told me, earlier, that you were in your dressing room when you were not on stage, and you wore the costume with the gun in it during the third act. That would mean that that gun had to be switched during the first two acts. During the time you were on stage, who else was not on stage besides the victim?"

"No i had not seen Richard before the play, I am actually unsure where he was exactly, but his dressing room would be the most likely place."

"Let's see... For the first scene of Act I, the only people who were not on stage were Mr. Rimusorgsky and Mr. Prokinsky. Mr. Rimusorgsky was a guest, so he wouldn't have had time to get much of a motive, and Mr. Prokinsky's new to the Company, so he still hasn't gotten to know everyone. I was in my dressing room during the second scene of that act, which is when I handed the prop gun over to be reloaded. I got it back during the intermission and placed with my costume for the third act. I was still in my dressing room during the second scene of the second act, so the gun couldn't have been switched then." Richard paused to think. "During the second scene, I was on-stage, though I returned to my dressing room to change for the third scene after my duet with Ms. Holgar was over. Mr. Rimusorgsky was only on-stage for very early in that scene, Ms. Holgar wasn't needed on-stage until my arioso was over, and Ms. Rossaldi was only needed on-stage after I had exited. No one else was needed on-stage for that scene at any time. During the third scene, everyone except Liszt was on-stage at some point, and as it was a short scene, it had been arranged that everyone would be ready to appear the instant the music started.
"So... that means that, depending on the time the gun was switched, the possible suspects are... Ms. Holgar, Ms. Rossaldi, Mr. Smetak, and Mr. Woodman. Of course, this is assuming the criminal is one of the singers. I don't think Ms. Wagner would bother with killing anyone, given her attitude, and I don't know of anyone on the crew who had issues with Mr. Liszt. I know my daughter hates Mr. Liszt after what he did to her, but she's in the orchestra, so she didn't have an opportunity to switch the guns."

Derek furiously scribbled down those names. He would certainly need them later. But right now there was a more pressing instance.

"You handed off the gun to someone? And then it was given back to you. Please, tell me, who did you give the gun to. Who was in charge of reloading the prop?"

"Alright, thanks, Emily. I'll ask you if I need anything else." Issac said as he left the room.

"Alright, the only other person left right now is Rufus Woodman." Issac muttered to himself as he knocked on the door marked: "Woodman".

"I certainly didn't see any differences. Then again, when I had the murder weapon in my hand, I didn't see any differences, either. I imagine it's unlikely that some part-time crew member would have a grudge against Liszt, though. Wait..." Richard paused as he tried to recall the appearance of the crew member. "He looked around college-age. Perhaps he had feelings for my daughter or her friend? Both of them had dated Liszt at one point. If he switched the guns, that's the only possibility I can see as far as motive goes."

"So, it was either a well-made prop, or the shot came from somewhere else. Oh well, that's what rifling marks and trajectory are for. I'll leave that to the coroner to examine. I can focus on this crew member now, but I think there's still some information I need to get." Derek thought.

"I'm not familiar with Ms. Rossaldi and Mr. Smetak. Who are they in the opera? I take it they weren't fans of Liszt's rehersal-dodging?"

"I'll just have to examine that in greater detail myself, then." Derek thought to himself. Opportunity before motive, and now he had that. A part-time crewman would certainly implicate Virginia, as she'd have to direct such people. As for the other two singers, it would be doubtful that they would plan something with a crewman, unless of course, the crewman was in on it. It would be rather silly to think that a crewman would obey the talent without question.

"At the moment, Mr. Glinkirev, I have no other questions." Derek smiled. He was very bad at empathy, and he knew it. Nonetheless, this job required a fair bit of it.

"Perk...perk up. This case is not as open-and-shut as the police would have you believe."

Derek thanked his client and made his way back to the opera house. There was definitely a few things he needed to ask that director, as well as catch up with Issac and see if he learned anything.

He phoned Issac as he got inside his car.

"It's Derek." Derek spoke bruskly to Issac, as he tended to do.

"Listen, I need you to check up on a few suspects for me. Ms. Rossaldi, Mr. Smetak, and Mr. Woodman. See what you can find out about them. I'll be meeting Ms. Wagner later."

"Roger that. I'm already trying Woodman, but it looks like he's not in. I'll go see what I can do." Issac replied.

Issac walked over to the door marked 'Rossaldi' and knocked.

Derek hung up the phone as he drove towards the opera house. He hoped that Ms. Wagner would be the one to shed some light on this. If the actors were as evasive as Mr. Woodman, things could get ugly.

"Nothing special. I was singing the role of Carmen while he was Don José, so we had to work together quite often. He was a good actor, and his voice was amazing, but he was always immature and disruptive during rehearsals. He was just someone I didn't connect well with."

"What about him? I didn't think ill of him, if that's what you mean. Given the circumstances, I can understand his motive. I'd probably be tempted to commit murder, too, if someone like Liszt dated my daughter only to stab her in the back--not that I have a daughter to begin with. Still... There is something that just feels odd about the whole thing..."

Derek returned to the opera house, knocking on Ms. Wagner's door. Too much was bugging him about this case. Although arguing this case seemed simple enough, something stunk. Who was the mastermind behind this?

"Guess this is my vacation." He knocked harder.

Just as Derek was about to enter Ms. Wagner's room, his phone rang.

"Issac, of all the times to call..." He picked up, and immediately removed his abrupt manner of thinking to speak properly.

"Derek, go ahead."

"Just wanted to tell you some things you might wanted to know if you haven't already. First, Richard has a motive. Liszt was dating his daughter then stabbed her in the back, not literally, of course. The other thing I learned, Rossaldi didn't actually like Lizst that much. She thought Liszt was always immature because he acted bad during a different opera she and him were in. I'm going to visit Smetak right now." Issac explained as fast as he could because he knew Derek probably needed to be somewhere.

"Good day, Ms. Wagner. I apologize for the delay, but there were a few questions that we didn't go over before that I must ask you."
