I honestly can't think of a game/games I enjoyed so much in recent years (with the possible exception of Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door). But I've been trying to work out why I like it, is the gameplay itself? On paper, it doesnt sound very exciting, but somehow it just works. Is it the stories and quirky humour? Is it the fact I have actually got emotionally involved in playing?
I think it's a combination of all those - particularly the stories, humour and emotional aspect. I honestly care about what happens to Phoenix. You could argue I could just watch a movie for that, but well.. a TV show/movie is passive. We're just watching actors. But the dramatic storylines in the game mean we're at one with Phoenix.

In 1-4 I felt sad when Maya left. Of course its just a video game character I know.

In 2-4 we feel his awful diallema, his concern, his hopelessness. We're there with him on a rollercoaster of emotion.
Well that's what I think :D

I for one rarely watch any television so I have no idea what a courtroom drama is like, and the simple premise of playing a lawyer in a videogame was enough to make me go "HUH?" It took lots of word of mouth and a whole mob of acquaintances to harrass me into actually playing PW.

I loved being there with Phoenix while he went through learning how to be a good defense attorney. The story has some cheesy moment, some over-dramatic/melodramatic moments, but that's what makes PW fun to play! It was satisfying being able to sift through all the clues to find out the truth, and drag it all out into the open. And the whole cast of characters were great :D, even if a couple might seem a little boring or annoying to interact with, they were at least interesting to look at. The writer and the artist took the time to make sure that each one stood out in their own way.

I agree with you, I'm not into courtroom shows/dramas either and it seems a wierd idea for a video game, but as you say it's great to be there with Phoenix, and the writers and localization team did an excellent job on the first two games, not only with the cases, but with the characters and making them seem "real". The cheesy jokes and puns just add to the fun :D

I think it's mostly the characters. How many other games have you playing a snarky lawyer who has to talk to gay pink-wearing chefs, enraged bitter old women, circus freaks, and a hot lawyer with boobs the size of her head in order to solve crimes and defeat a upper-class jerk in a cravat?

Plus, it's one of the few games with a truly unique premise. Before GS, a game about the law sounded about as much fun as an enema.

Yeah, it was the same for me.

This is the reason why my favourite games are Zelda, Final Fantasy 9, Golden Sun and Phoenix Wright.

The most emotional game after PW was Another Code: Two Memories (Trace Memory in the US), but that one was too short...

I really like that analysis of the characters Toby :D Edgeworth = Upper class jerk in a cravat :D
Yes, indeed the characters play a big part. Phoenix's sarcasm and witty asides make him seem more human than most characters I know (though I dont play many RPG's).

When you hear a game is from Capcom that already gives the game something to pique your interest, right? The same company that has a load of fun games long ago. Well okay, I mean, it doesn't sound like it'll sell at first (and that's what they had thought too) but once you start playing, you find there are fine-tuned characters, amazing stories full of drama and comedy, you can't help but feel like you're a part of it all. Where can you find such great characters? (No Judge is as sagacious as Udgey). The music is one major factor. It creates a realistic atmosphere fitting for each situation, especially once you make your turnabout in court.

Characters are one reason, for sure. Sometimes when I think about PW I'm like...wait I'm playing a freakin' text game as a lawyer. Then when I play it again I have so much fun.

Characters. For one, they are plenty colorful... their appearance and personalties, I mean. I'm not sure if being bright colors help (Hotel Dusk didn't have bright colors) but maybe it does...

But my list would start off with the Sprites. They are very well done. Ace Attorney sprites have to be my favorite out of all the games I've played.

Second would be music. It does a really good job at setting the scene.

I don't know why I like Phoenix Wright to be honest. Everything about the games are fantastic: the storylines, the characters, the humour...everything. I'm really addicted to it now and I got my DS like a month or two ago. One of my first games was Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and I've become addicted ever since. I've recently bought the second one, Justice For All, and I'm even more addicted. It's even better.
Spoiler:
Just finished my second case now and I've just started on the third one with the circus

But Phoenix Wright is just wicked! Probably push it and say one of the best games I've ever played!

It's just the whole package, I think. Thoughtful writing with well rounded characters who have a reason to exist and do what they do, intelligent and funny dialogue, fun sprites, box-of-frogs lunacy (but never so much that it hurts the drama) and superb tension helped along by the music.

I really love PW too, and I'm not sure why either. Maybe it's Miles Edgeworth's hotness... But then again, I didn't really start thinking he was hot until 1-4... I think it was all the stupid puns and stuff that made me laugh so much even though they were really stupid and pointless... But anyway, I don't really care WHY I love it, I just care that I DO love it... And always will. :-) Right now I'm trying to get my best friend Kelly into it. I think she would buy it, but she doesn't have a Nintendo DS. That's the only problem. But I think she would love it all the same. Double :-)

But, before I leave, I HAVE to thank my sister for letting me borrow the game in the first place. She's the reason I'm addicted to it as much as I am! Thanks a lot Chris, I know you're prolly not gonna read this but thanks anyway, I owe it all to you! *hugz* (she hates hugs)

I am very obsessive over the PW games (and of course, Miles Edgeworth.) I have about 25 pictures of Edgeworth saved on my laptop (all from this site, by the way) and I even have an Edgeworth desktop. And that's all because of Croik, so I have to thank her too. Thanks a lot Croik, you make all of us smile. :-D

P. S. That's what I do when I can't think of a sig.

For me it's the characters. Mainly the comments that Maya and Gumshoe come up with.

Also it has the best soundtrack in any game I've played.

The story, the humor, the great name puns, the music, the characters - it's just perfect.

The characters are awesome, and they really have some depth, they really have a personality.

The story is awesome, and guess what's cool too? Yes, it's that that the same characters and things appear in other games too...: )

The name puns are, like, really good. ( :ditz: ) Mr. Sahwit!

Music's...addicting. No other game has so many good tunes that I would remember, even though Mario's and Zelda's main themes are legends.

The humor....xD

the characters got me into the series, and the characters are still what I love. I love making original characters myself, and so I always love a series that can produce well-developed, realistic personalities, complete with some interesting, interconnected backstories. <3

I feel the same. Even about Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. That used to be my favorite game until Phoenix Wright rolled around.

Usually, when I like a game/TV show/anime, I get emotionally attached to the characters. To me they almost feel like friends. And when something happens to them I feel what I would feel for someone I care about in a real life (it sort of like when FRIENDS ended. I was reduced to tears).

At first, I thought Phoenix was a straight (NOT sexual orientation. I mean comedy-wise, the person who is serious and not easily fooled). I never thought he'd be witty, sarcastic and as loveable as he is. Maya, Edgey, Gummy and Franny only made me love the games more.

It's gotta be the translation, hands down. I could easily see how this largely text-based game could have epically phailed if some sad fool ( :larry: ) had translated it.

I agree with Pylons. Until PW came out, Paper Mario: TTYD was one of the most fun, engaging games I'd ever played. It's the characters that make PW, indeed Nick can be serious when he wants but he's also very much an everyman, he is "us", witty, sarcastic and just great, and I love Phoenix (not in a homoerotic way..)

Well, I say the colorful cast of characters and the writing are crucial parts of the game. Plus, unlike the other games like Grand Theft Auto, for example, this one actually makes you use your brain and you also learn terms such as ballistic markings, point blank range, and other stuff like that. The story lines are crucial too.

Definitely the characters and plot. The way the cases are woven together keeps be up longer than I should be (I was nearly late to work one day trying to finish case 1-5), and the characters keep me entertained.

Plus, I just think what makes it such a great game is the whole package. I can pick out crutial parts, but I can't pick out just one part that actually makes the game. The characters, the storyline, the music. And as a result to all of this? PW: AA won E3 best adventure game. See, it's really just the whole thing itself that really makes it the game it is.

Well, I am quite new to the game, but I guess long enough to actually give an opinion on this matter.

What made me enjoy PW so much was definitely the gameplay. To be telling the truth, when I first heard about the game, "about law, courts, defending your client and finding evidence", I really didn't like the sound of it.

I never liked the courtroom [due to some bad memories] and also, I found it kind of... boring. And anything to do with it, whether on TV or in real life, I really didn't care.

But PW really changed me on that fact.

Maybe dumb, clueless judges, spiked-hair attorneys, spirit medium assistants, old lustful [and bitter] women, perfect prosecutors aren't an everyday thing. Hmmm... But then again, I don't think thats what made me into PW.

Something about it... I couldn't put my finger on what... is just unique. And special.

Alright, this is a LOOONG post, so if you want to read this, grab a drink, I guess.

I am a fan of WWE, but I am also a fan of CSI (the original). A while ago, I realized that CSI covers ONE side of the court proceedings: The detective's and prosecutor's abilities. Meanwhile, PW covers the aspect of a defense attorney who believes in his clients whole-heartedly, and isn't in the game for his own possible achievements, so to speak.

Also, there are three (and ONLY THREE) characters in PW that I personally believe you will NEVER find ANYWHERE in real life, and just their PRESENCE makes them so unbelievably attractive in terms of the fact that love them or hate them, they make SURE you pay attention to them!!!:

3. Redd White: He's the stereotypical "Ultimate Power". Untouchable, ruthless, and slighly flamboyant. Also, do YOU know anyone who makes up random words like "Splendiferous"? WELL? DO YOU???

2. Sal Manella: If anyone has used MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or has been on a forum or Message board ANYWHERE for more than 2 days, you connect to Sal on a level that you YOURSELF don't even realize. It's also that his speech is not only different (so to speak) but hearing people's REACTION to it is priceless. :maya-shock: "Nick, what are "rocksores"?" You will NEVER find someone like him in real life, since his speech is ONLY able to be imitated with text, and NEVER with voice.

Now, my number ONE person is probably gonna cause some controversy, but hear me out:

Number One......... Wendy Oldbag.

Now, some people will look at this and say "WHAT??? WHY THE HELL IS THAT ANNOYING _____ NUMBER ONE???" Simple! You just said why! She's annoying as hell!!! Some people you meet in real life will say "Pal" or "Fool" and you'll maybe giggle a little at the reference, but if you EVER.... EVER see anyone elderly who's complaining about the youth of today, you will IMMEDIAELY picture Oldbag, without pause or question. People CAN rant as long as her, but no one can be as memorable as her. Without a doubt, she's one of the most hated characters, because she MAKES you hate her! This game is geared towards teens... I've heard of people in their FIFTYS who hate Oldbag!!! THAT'S UNBELIEVABLE!!! Also, when an old woman is hitting on someone as young as Miles Edgeworth, then complaining about the youth of today SECONDS later, there are one of two things that go through your mind: laughter, or that feeling you get when someone you don't know asks you for a date when you're in high school: that "creeped out" feeling. Of course, if you're and Edgeworth fangirl, you also want to kill Oldbag for frustrating Edgeworth, but that's another story. lol.

Anyways, back on topic, the characters of the game have presence, which is what you NEED a character to have in video games, movies, TV shows, ANYTHING!!!

I'll be fair however, the drama in PW also makes me replay the game over and over again (AA over 7, JFA over 10!!!). I put my DS down and sobbed (I'll admit it, dammit!) when I saw the opening scenes for PW:AA Case 2. I was stunned when I was given the truth for JFA cases 2 and 4 (who wasn't???). I looked like :nick-sweat: when I was in a scene with Moe the Clown... and had pretty much the same opinions as Phoenix.
Spoiler:
I felt pain for Acro, hatred for Manfred von Karma, and relief upon defeating Engarde.

This game takes you on a ride, and once the ride's over, you just want to go back on it! Many games maybe make you play them repeatedly to see the different endings (From Super Metroid to Soul Calibur III), but PW is a short game with, to be honest, the same ending over and over again.
Spoiler:
not counting the side-ending for JFA of course.

Best of all, unlike games like Soul Calibur, you don't MIND constantly playing PW over and over again, and seeing the same endings constantly!

Without a doubt, PW is a staple in video game history, and that is something I can NOT object to.

......... err.......... sorry for all the text....... maybe I should just make this an essay? lol.

I, personally, was really impressed by the translation. I mean, there are so many puns and jokes and stuff that are only accessible to a Japanese audience in the Japanese version of PW. I thought it was really cool that the translators were able to account for those same puns and jokes and make them accessible to an audience that understood a completely different language. (Although I still think that the names for Ini Miney and Mimi Miney should have been Ini Miney and Mini Miney. Just 'cause.) The typo in the Bad End scene in JFA is lamentable though... Anywhere else they could have gotten away with it.

And I adore the characters. Every time I come across a new one, I can't wait to learn about them, to discover who they are and what their silly little character trait is, pal. Oh, and I love their poses. Like, every time Edgeworth does that thing where he taps the side of his head, I can't help but do it to. Even though he's about to refute everything Phoenix just said, I can't help it. I love that pose.

I think it's great that a game about something as mundane as LAWYERS has become a complete phenomenon. And it's for good reason too.

Oh, and Wrestlemania? I totally agree with you. Oldbag is one-of-a-kind. XD

The ONLY sad thing is how many OTHER DS games have basically tried to somewhat STEAL the idea of PW, that being, the whole "uncovering the truth". Examples of course being Hotel Dusk, Touch Detective, and I am reeeeeeally bordering on saying "Nancy Drew" since it's on the DS, but I have yet to play THAT one.

New quote: "Phoenix Wright: Objectifying itself to a nation."

Hell, it's true... It's damn true.

I like your post Wrestlemania, the loooong one.

I agree especially on the part where you said the game brings us on rides that we want to get on over and over again. We practically feel what Phoenix is going through.

PW is just, awesome. I guess there's no real words to really describe this game.

You really have to try the game out in order to know its true "awesome-ness". It doesn't sound exciting when described.

"A game where you become a defense attorney who will protect his clients. Find evidences and clues..." and blablabla. Doesn't sound exciting, no? I guess thats why some of my classmates think I'm a nerd for playing this game... Because they have never tried it before!

PS. I gotta agree on Oldbag too. xD

To be fair to Nancy Drew, wasn't it a series of books (or something) long before PW? I know what you mean though, as if its just cashing in on PW. As for Hotel Dusk, I really want to try that one.

Aye. Also, Nancy Drew had many, MANY games on the PC, but I mean as a DS game, using the touch screen (possibly, not sure yet since I haven't played it). Although i WILL admit, that I expected SOME people to say "OLDBAG???" By now, but hey, look around! She doesn't have a lot of fans for a REASON! Payne, Wellington, Raymond, step aside, because it's true: Everybody Hates Oldbag.

It's funny, she's almost the 80's-era Roddy Piper of PW: She's the character you LOVE to hate. And she always gives you a reason to hate her!

Oldbag quote: "There's no way it could've been anyone else!" her next line, when asked why, "Because... I said so. And what I say is the truth."

No one, no matter how much of a jerk they are, would EVER say a line that is... almost borderline snobby, truth be told. Also, in JFA, pressing all her statements also lets you hear Phoenix's thoughts regarding... violence he would like to have geared toward Oldbag. I found that priceless.

Also, one more thing I forgot to mention about her. Did anyone buy PW:AA, play it, then buy PW:JFA, and play it, and upon hearing Oldbag for the first time, say "Oh, no... Not her... Anyone but her!!!" BESIDES me? lol. I also remember seeing a funny article about a guy who played PW, I'll try to look for it again, but no guarantees.

Well, I played reverse (JFA before AA), but I pretty much had the same impression as you.

They should make a show called "Everybody Hates Oldbag". xD

It's a combination of well-written characters and dialogue, intriguing storylines with plot twists, great music, pretty art and thoroughly engaging gameplay (for a text adventure) that make it my personal favorite series ever. It's just so perfectly executed that it works wonderfully, you know?

I love the AA/GS series <3

I always assumed she was just going through the motions of it to show her dislike of Phoenix :yuusaku: And to be an annoying old bitch, of course.
