Hey guys, there's something in the second game that's been bothering me ever since I first played it.
Spoiler: 2-4 in particular, but 2-2 and 2-3 also feature the subject
It's the way Phoenix takes Miles's so-called "death". I absolutely understand why he would be so mad, but I was pretty shocked to see him blaming Edgeworth for being proud and selfish and aiming for the "perfect record" like the Von Karmas do. The way Phoenix puts it, he thinks Edgeworth couldn't bear having been defeated in court, because it wounded his pride. Now that just doesn't make any sense for me at all. With the kind of pressure Edgeworth has been put under in the first game, even if you don't count the fifth case, one can think of many reasons for him to break down - and loosing face might very well be one of them, but "loosing face" is not the same as "wounded pride". Where the hell did this "wounded pride" theory even come from? Phoenix, of all people, should know that winning in court is hardly a matter of pride for Edgeworth (well, not the selfish kind of pride he refers to anyway), and while I see how he would be offended and a bit too emotional with his judgments at the time, that he would make such accusations is just hysterical.
What's even more confusing, Edgeworth basically agrees with Phoenix, and I don't remember how exactly he phrased it, but it did seem like he generally admits that Phoenix was right with his assumptions.
For me, this whole issue was like dismissing all the intellectual drama of the first game for no reason.

Now I have this nagging suspicion that things might look somewhat differently in the original Japanese script. I know that to determine this I'll just have to play the games in Japanese myself, but with my poor Japanese I'm scared to think of how long it would take me. So, until I have enough free time (if I ever do), I thought I'd ask people who played the original for their opinion.
So please, if you've played it, and you happen to remember any bits of conversation from the game relating to this matter, could you be so kind and share your impressions with me. And, perhaps, if someone finds it possible to quote certain helpful phrases, that'd be wonderful.

I'm really sorry if something like this has been discussed before, in that case I'd be happy if you'd just direct me to where I can read about it.

Oh, and, by the way. If you think that this part of the story makes perfect sense, and that perhaps I'm just missing something and taking things wrong, I would appreciate it if you'd explain your point. I'd be glad to try and look at the thing from different perspectives, really I would.

Thanks.
