I think I got an idea. Like said, he was siding with Mia by being the defense aid, and then the badge isn't really required. So he used that opportunity to make his presence less remarkable by not wearing the badge (which is more or less proof that you're a defense attorney) because he didn't want to overshadow Mia by being like a mentor to her. He was Grossberg's top lawyer and very skilled, after all. Remember this nice coversation?
So, Diego Armando, the finest attorney at Grossberg Law Offices, is here for me...?

I think this is true. He also doesn't want to brag about being a defence attorney, unlike Nick, Mia, Grossberg and Kristoph. And that's the answer to that question.
