So what's your take on why no-one suspect anything when Furio Tigre played the role of Phoenix?

I personally think that Furio was not red when he was playing Nick's role. As seen in the intro movie before case 3-3, Furio-Nick was not red, and the sprites of him were from Nick's sprite sheet. I remember that there was mentioned something like that Furio took a vacation after that trial, so I wonder if he stayed too long in the sun...

But that doesn't really explain everything. I can see that there was a long time since Maggey had met Phoenix, and that the Judge is in his own worlds most of the time, but what about Payne? Did he see right through him and decided to stay silent about it to get the first victory against Nick?

Please share your take on this.

Well, most people were either foolishly tricked by Tigre saying he got a tan, or were too afraid, like the Judge.

Using Nick's sprite at the beginning was probably just to fool the player. Payne probably kept silent due to the reason you stated.

I think the idea was that people thought something was "off" but were afraid to say anything because of how scary Phoenix had become. I do chalk up the normal Phoenix sprite in the intro to artistic license. I'm sure that in actuality it must have looked something like this

I don't think Payne would have cared who the defense lawyer was, especially if it being Tigre meant that he could easily win.

When Phoenix took Maggey's first case he was suffering from amnesia and therefore was being a clueless arse for most of the trial - she may not have noticed the difference :)
