Isn't it highly possible that Maya knew Diego? I mean, Mia and he were bf/gf. They worked together for months, so it should be possible that they knew each other.

Why then, did she not know Godot?

To be fair, Godot looks pretty different from Diego in a lot of respects so if she only met him a couple of times, it's not hard to believe that she simply wouldn't have made the connection. Also, he was in a coma for a very long time and without someone letting Maya know that he had recovered, it's doubtful that Maya would have expected to see him and it's even more unlikely that she would have expected to see her sister's defense attorney boyfriend show up as the opposing prosecutor. Rather coincidental there. :shoe:

But we don't know that she knew him well, so his smile probably wouldn't be a dead give away to anyone but someone who knew him well. Mia clearly recognizes him, but there isn't any reason that Maya would know him so well. Besides, it had been six years and, as I pointed out, Diego had been in a coma for all that time. Unless someone told her that he'd recovered, Maya would likely have assumed he was still in a hospital bed. Hard to believe that someone unconscious for so long would just snap out of it and jump right back onto his feet.

Once again, he's been in a coma for six years. Hell, if Mia didn't correct her (and she may well not have wanted to talk about it in the circumstances), Maya may even have believed he was dead (the newspapers recorded it as a murder even if official documents never did. Maya wouldn't have had access to official documents). Not to mention that Maya would have been younger and memories often fade over time. Six years is a decent chunk of time particularly when you consider that she would have been much younger when he was poisoned and age also affects memory, usually negatively. Diego was a defense attorney who had been in a coma for six years because of poison. I imagine that the possibility that the prosecutor out to get her friend (and Mia's student) was Diego never even crossed her mind.

How much would Maya have even met him? IIRC, there was only a period of months between 3-4 and Diego's "Death". And why would Diego be extremely memorable to Maya if she did meet him? We don't know how many boyfriends Mia had before that, why would this one be so much more important? Heck, she might have been at Kurain most of the time back then, how old was she when Diego & Mia were together?

I'm pretty sure Mia told Maya about Diego and Maya has seen him, but Godot doesn't look as much similar to Diego because of his looks/name. Also, that was about 5 years back, Maya probably forgot about it and she probably thought Godot looked a bit "fishy" too her.

By the way, I'm pretty sure Mia and Diego weren't GF/BF's because before he was poisoned he was with Dahlia. (So called Girlfriend.)

Dahlia was with the victim of 3-1 (who was NOT Diego) but then she poisoned Diego & broke up with the victim around that time, after poisoning Diego, she met Phoenix.

I think we can safely assume that Maya didn't recognize him in 3-2 and 3-3. She's not very good at concealing her emotions or suppressing her hunches. There's not as much of a "..." out of her.

Before Maya is locked in the cavern in 3-5, she doesn't know who he is. When she comes out, she knows, and actively tries to protect him on the stand. I've always wondered how she found out. I guess we could chalk it up to Mia, the series' deus ex machina.

If my older sister had introduced me to one of her boyfriends when I was 12, I would most definitely not remember his smile, looks, etc. 6 years later. Maya probably has a worse memory than I do (Knowing her character). Also, she would have been in Kurain most of the time and probably only met him a few times, if that.
