Well that figures. The second game is the only one that I do not own. :sadshoe: I did play it through once, when a friend let me borrow her copy, but I wanted to get it back to her as soon as possible, and had it beaten in five days. Needless to say, I didn't observe every detail. Believe me, I want it. But I refuse to buy it for myself. Another friend is supposedly using it to commission me, but he's yet to send it to me. And I don't start on the art until I get the goods D:<

She keeps saying she wants revenge, and Phoenix thinks that its because he's the reason her father is dead. Phoenix thinks it a lot, in fact, Im starting to doubt you read any text between :franny: / :phoenix: outside of court

Oh don't doubt it, I didn't just skip it. I wouldn't skip out on any of that. If mention of a death was made, I must have just misinterpreted it as something else.
Spoiler:
I personally thought she was just wanting to get revenge on him for ruining her father's perfect win record. This is probably why I don't recall the events the way you do.
As I said, I don't own the game. The other two, however, I have played more than once, playing through Trials and Tribulations once more as we speak. But yes, because of my lack of the second game, I do feel that I'm missing out.

Actually, Balrog, it could also be because Phoenix killed the creed of von karma Perfection... or because at THAT time, von Karma was in prison still. He's never stated as being DEAD in that game.

In T&T, however, Phoenix says something like "But now, he's gone from this world".

She DID want revenge because of phoenix wreaking the Von Karma creed, by defeating :edgeworth: remember? But up until she tells him that, he assumes its because of her father.
And yes its true they dont say "VON KARMA BE DEAD FOO" but the hint that hes dead all over the place, I mean like FRIGGIN' EVERY WHERE

Not really, the most we get is "It won't bring your father back!" which could still be interpretted as "It won't get your father out of prison!".

As I said before though, in T&T, there's only ONE way to translate "He's gone from this world"...

Im sorry but I must disagree, to me "It wont bring your father back" means he must be gone. If he was only in prison she could go visit him and Phoenix would have been more likely to say something like "It wont free your father"

True, but while "It won't bring your father back" could mean one or the other, the T&T line is a 100% undisputable, undeniable, conclusive line.

We still don't have any proof of that, other than ONE execution. If you have another where the hanging is specified, then please, present it now.

I don't see why everyone thinks PW is so futuristic. It's like, 10 years tops. Things won't DRASTICALLY change to laser beams and hover crafts in ten years. Hanging could be used 10 years from now, but why they'd deviate from injections, I don't know.

Um... Executions haven't been public for 50 years or so... Nobody's going to be watching, except the excecutioner and maybe some guards. Public executions are less humane than lethal injections because they're humiliating.

Still though, remember 1-3's "Pasta in a can"? Does that stuff really exist?

Also, I still think that Injections, "The Chair", and maybe even firing squad, would still exist in this game...

Ah ha! I knew it. The hanging thing came up in another thread. If you're interested, I'll post the link but it seems that hanging is still how executions in Japan are done. They probably were just being accurate with the translation.

I'm going to use the legal knowledge my dad the lawyer imparted on me. I live on the border of LA (Pasadena, which I think was referenced in the game, don't remember).

Alaska.

Anchorage was struck by the most powerful earthquake in US and American history on Good Friday in 1964. It scored an 8.2 on the Richter Scale and killed 131 people, 12 in California. This was by the tsunamis it generated. (Source)

The death penalty is still legal in California (Source), however the electric chair was never used in California, cyanide gas was used instead. Firing squad is still used in Idaho, although lethal injection is the other option. The most recent execution by firing squad was in 1996. The obvious is that he got lethal injection, which is the sole method of execution in the state at the moment.

Lethal injections are not publlic, however the families of the victims are allowed to watch.

True enough, for the last comment... and for the second one... the first one, I'm a biiiit skeptical to hand over.

But yeah, large public executions haven't been around for a long time (... I suddenly have a craving for a Snickers), but the viewing of a lethal injection for victims' families, or victims themselves if the case is not a murder, is still plausible.

Also, to Mia Fey, Capcom could've still changed the death method to reflect something else, I mean, they've changed many other things in the game, if I'm not mistaken, in comparison to Japanese culture.

I simply brought it up for people who were curious about why hanging was used. The fact is that game is originally set in Japan and was localized to LA probably because of the prevalence of earthquakes in California which is important to the plot of the first game and plays a role in the third. Whether or not they could have changed it isn't the issue. The fact is they didn't. I'm not sure how close they normally stay to the original text since I can't read Japanese, but considering they didn't change this which really wouldn't have changed the plot much, they probably try to stay pretty close to the original Japanese text when they can.

Alright, true... but earthquakes are something they couldn't change (remember the Earthquakes in 1-4 (Detention Centre) and 3-5?), but the execution style is something that couldn't have made a difference... or maybe it comes back in GS5? I have no clue.

... Only... It doesn't make a bit of difference, guys.

I do have to admit, the death by hanging was rather gruesome for my tastes. I almost felt sorry for Dahlia when she let us know how she was killed. Justice can be rather cruel.

:odoroki: : DAMN STRAIGHT.

Even so, there isn't a great deal of logic in the way these executions are done. I mean, hell, everyone knows that all lethal injection needles are sterilized. What the hell is the point in that? It's so blatantly contradictory it doesn't even need to be OBJECTION!'d. That and I don't really support the death penalty anyway... But let's not stray into another topic entirely.

Interesting note: the last public hanging in American history was held right here in my hometown of Owensboro, KY. :hobohodo:

It makes sense as a location; it's on the coast (like Japan), prone to earthquakes (like Japan), has mountains (like Japan) and large cities with production studios (like Japan). I believe one of the localization interviews said something along the lines of, "In my mind, the series takes place in Los Angeles. The Kurain tribe immigrated and started a village in the mountains." This would explain nearly everything.

Incidentally, do all the other Western translations take place in America, or do they take place in their respective countries? For instance, does Fransiska still come from Germany in the German version of Phoenix Wright, or does she come from somewhere else (Japan, perhaps, to complete the loop?)
No, I seriously don't have anything else to put here besides a link that gets me rewards when people click on it.

Phoenix speaks to her and you can choose "Talk", then 3 options. I think the SECOND one, holds my quote... but I'm not playing that case for a while. I replayed it too many times in a row due to me finding sources for quotes.
