At the end of 3-5, in the lobby, Mia tells Phoenix, "You've accomplished something I wasn't able to."
I feel like I must be missing something really obvious, but... what exactly was she referring to? :ini:

Here's the entire conversation if context helps~
Spoiler: Xcarvenger's scripts rock
Mia:
Of course justice was served.

Phoenix:
M-Mia!

Mia:
...I'm proud of you, Phoenix.

Mia:
Your defense was...
truly brilliant.

Phoenix:
B-But I couldn't save
Mr. Armando!

Phoenix:
The man who cared so
deeply for you...

Mia:
You're wrong, Phoenix.

Mia:
You did save Diego.

Mia:
You saved him in the only
way possible.

Phoenix:
You mean... with that
verdict...?

Mia:
...

Mia:
I think one day, you'll
understand, too.

Mia:
Phoenix, I want you to
remember one thing...

Mia:
You were as good out there
today as any defense lawyer
could ever hope to be.

Mia:
There's nothing more you can
learn from me.

Phoenix:
M-Mia...!

Mia:
You've accomplished something
I wasn't able to.

Mia:
I owe you a great deal.
...Thank you.

Phoenix:
Mia...

Mia:
I'm sure we'll meet again...
someday... Phoenix.

I think she meant take down Dahlia Hawthorne...

(I know Mia got her convicted in 3-1, but that didn't do much in the end, did it?)

Didn't do much in the end?

I'm not sure I follow your logic, Dahlia was sentenced and hanged thanks to Mia, I'm pretty sure that would count as much.

Defeating Dahlia is one thing I'm pretty sure it's not. In fact Mia seems quite possessive of the ability to defeat Dahlia:
Mia:
But I think you finally
understand, Dahlia Hawthorne.

Mia:
...You will never defeat me.

Hm... I think she was referring to how Phoenix saved Diego. Besides the obvious dead factor, she probably could not have gotten him a guilty verdict if she had been in Nick's position. The man was her lover AND had just saved his sister's life; even though Mia believes in justice, that would still be an incredibly difficult decision.

(Or something could have been lost in translation.)

That's the conclusion I'm most likely to draw as well. However I don't trust myself to draw impartial conclusions when it comes to issues of Miego, so. :butzthumbs: I welcome all opinions.

(The line seems identical in Japanese--but of course, I'm an amateur at the language and am not good at picking up on subtleties yet, so I could have missed something.)

Get me Mia's entire quote, and I'll translate as closely to the original meaning as possible. Working with translating the doujinshi I've been doing has made me a little keener in catching subtleties.

Suuuuure, tell me this the day AFTER I finish the case again. xD
-zooms through from her last save point- (Yikes, almost went right past it without thinking DX)
あなたは....私にできなかった
ことを、やりとげてくれたの。

"Kureta" means that whatever this thing is, Mia considers it a favor, but other than that...

That's right, b/c killing her really helped prevent 3-5 and all that convoluted craziness :nick:

Maybe it was "Stop Dahali Hawthorne for good and defeat Morgan's plan once and for all"?

Iunno -_-' The only other thought I had was winning the case/saving Godot, but I didn't really think that was it... (I mean, it's not like she ever really tried to do that... she kinda died before she got a chance)

But how do they know it's "for good"? A jealous branch member could channel her and there'd be chaos again. :beef: (I live in fear of this. ...Not really. But sorta.) And again, Mia seems to claim the ability to defeat Dahlia entirely to herself.

Right, when I try to think of it in terms of "saving Godot" or even "convicting Godot," I run into a problem of verb tense. XD; Mia probably wouldn't say "wasn't able to" about something she never tried.
That's one thing I'm wondering about the Japanese. I know they don't have a separate verb tense for words like "would," so I'm starting to wonder if that sentence would be better translated as "I wouldn't have been able to"....... buuuut again I don't trust myself to make that reading impartially.

Strange -- for once, the official translation says EXACTLY what the original japanese quote says. "Anata wa... Watashi ni dekinakatta koto wo, yari togete kureta no" means, directly transliterated, "You... Something I could not do, you have done in my place."

Well, that cleared things up. :payne: Still, good job on the translation.

If Mia had congratulated Nick over beating Morgan and Dahlia once and for all, wouldn't it have made more sense to say that right after they beat Dahlia? It's still feasible, but the timing seems off.

Spoiler: 2-4
I always thought Mia was referring to the fact that Phoenix indicted Godot.

Towards the end of 3-5, when Godot objects to the Judge acquitting both Iris and Maya, Mia asks Godot if he's sure about what he's saying. She knows that Godot killed her mother, and yet she still gives him a chance to retract his statement, and end the trial there. When Phoenix finally realises the truth though, he doesn't hesitate to try uncover the truth. Phoenix isn't happy about doing so, but the idea of trying to end the trial without Godot being indicted doesn't even occur to him.

I actually always thought this tied in well with 2-4, when Edgeworth came back, confidently announcing that he finally understood, had finally found his own answer as to what it meant to stand in Court, while Phoenix was tormented by his moral conflict. By 3-5, Phoenix seems to have come to much the same conclusion as Edgeworth, the truth is ultimately the most important thing in Court, and he had the strength to reveal that truth. Mia would have allowed the trial to end without the truth coming to light, and that's why she admits that she has nothing more to teach him.

This is all just my own opinion though.

I agree but I think she also means helping her defeat Dahlia to the best of their ability and besides the Judge does say

"We are currently filing papers for a way so no one ever channels that spirit again."
Or, something to that effect.
Diego
Mia
Phoenix
Godot
Judge
Maya
Pearl
Edgeworth
:javado: :youngmia: :phoenix: :godot: :udgy: :maya: :pearl: :edgeworth: Needs more DESU... no exceptions.

DominicanZero, thanks for the transliteration~ I thought it was pretty straightforward, but you can never be sure with the Japanese and their subtleties. :meekins:
Naruhodo: Good point. ...Though I'm still firmly of the opinion that it's absolutely not defeating Dahlia that she's referring to, because of how possessive she is of that. :payne: ......Maybe I'm the only one.
Phoenix Soul: The more people mention this the more validated I feel in believing it... but the verb tense is still weird... Your comparison to 2-4 is quite intriguing. :edgy:
Godot Armando: Not quite. He just says "It would be best for everyone if no further effort was made to channel that spirit again." It's advice, not anything legally binding. ...And I doubt anything legally binding would work anyway...
But if it's something they worked together on, is it really something that Phoenix does that she couldn't?

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I just re-played 3-5, and when I saw that, I thought she meant defeating Dahlia or something with Godot.
Now, I'm not sure.

In the end, I think Mia just meant saving Diego from himself and the pain and suffering he was bringing onto himself by forcing himself to stay alive on the excuse of beating the man who "let" Mia die.
