And your last question was meant to be up for interpretation, since there's never a simple awnser when it comes to human emotions. But I beleive he states that because he couldn't protect Mia from Dahlia, that he would make it up to her by protecting her sister.
The storyline can be a little hard to follow at times, but it's all said in the game at one point or another, just you don'T learn everything in chronological order.
