I don't know if she was a book author the entire 17-18 years she was gone, but I'm pretty sure everyone would have recognized her if she went back to Kurain, so I'm going to say yes, she stayed away.

She said a year or two ago, her friend submitted for her a story she wrote. This implies that she had no intention to submit the story, and thus more likely than not she was not a writer at that point.
