I'm aware his name derives from the play "Waiting For Godot." Admittedly I haven't read or seen the play, but I did read brief summaries online, so I have a basic understanding of what it was about. Other than a few lines of text, I didn't really see any other connections between his name (in the context of the game) and the play it came from. So I'm just curious, besides those few lines in the game, are there any other references to the play? Why did they choose the name Godot? Was it just for those few lines, and then just as another reference to popular culture?

Well, it seems everyone is waiting to meet him in the game. Atmey also talks about Godot like he was somekind of a God figure. That would be one reason for the name.

Spoiler:
Well, some say it came from his real game name: Diego Armando.

dieGO armanDO, hence "Godo" or "Godot", pronounced Go-Doh.

That's all I know anyway.

Spoiler:
Actually, it would be the other way around. Diego Armando came from Godot since Godot was used in the original Japanese.

I honestly have no idea why they called him Godot. I guess it was just to make him seem even more mysterious.

I think that in the Japanese version "Eagle river" is called "Godo river" and Godot is pronounced "Godo" so... Maybe the name was chosen because of that.

I'm certain it's pronounced "Gód-oh" but I still have a tendency of calling him "Gö-doh" for some stupid reason. North American dialect maybe? =/

In my opinion, anyone that can manage to survive that vicious redheaded stepchild, a lethal amount of specially made poison and can come back as a colorblind rookie prosecutor that gives Phoenix a run for his money, definitely qualifies as a god if not for the badass award of the year in my book! :keiko:

I always pronounced his name "Go-dot". I assumed that it was bacause that sounded sort of computer-ey and he has an electronic visor. But I was completely wrong about that...

Quick question though: Is it meant to be pronounced "Go-doh" or "God-oh"?

According to Wikipedia...

So it would be God-oh officially.

I think he was named Godot because in 3-5 he states that when he was in a coma, Mia would wait for him however she had died so no one could wait for him so he abandoned Diego Armando, and became who people would wait for, Godot.

And that's my theory.

Godot is a total mystery. The name is too. The man's a total enigma, and (as I know) Godot never comes. The mystery of the character is forever wandering, and so is the Godot we know and love in Trials and Tribulations.

All I know is what my brother told me when he read the book. I haven't. I may be mistaken, so don't shoot me.

Personally, I pronounce it as "G'doh".

That's just a quote from the play. An homage to it, so to say.
I didn't mean for that to rhyme.

Me too, go-doh sounds too clunky. G'doh has some finesse to it, I think.

I think it has to do with his arrogance. He believes his awesomeness matched the awesomeness of Godot, even to the point that he decided to disguise himself as Godot.

Before we knew his real identity, he was viewed as the Godot, the man so many have waited for (I know WfG is fictional, and fictional in the Phoenix Wright world too) The character of Godot was not really described at all in the play, but apparently he was so remarkable two people decided to spend their entire lives eagerly waiting for him. His arrival would be regarded as historic, in a way.

But in the end, he didn't turn out to be Godot, just a former defense attorney. Liar. That means people still have to wait for the real Godot. My point is, he named himself Godot in order to make people think great of him, when he really isn't, and he realizes that at the end of 3-5.

Drat. I've always thought of it as Go-DOH from when I saw the play performed a few years ago (I'm American). It bugs me when I realize I've been pronouncing something wrong, even when pretty much everyone here still says it that way.

For the English version, I think it's from DieGO ArmanDO. As for the Japanese version, they probably searched for a cool name.

Again, Diego Armando probably comes from Godot, not the other way around. Although, that could be Capcom's way of saying that the American pronunciation of Godot is the correct way.

I agree.
I think he did make himself a character from that play to.
I mean if I had to do the thing he had to do, I'd take a unique character's name as well.

I can just imagine Diego trying out for the high school play Waiting for Godot and the theater students decide to play a prank on him by giving him the "title character." (FYI, Godot never shows up in the play.) Then, coming out of his "coma," he relives his high school days in a flashback of sorts and yells out "I AM GODOT" as he sits bolt upright.

That's totally why he's called Godot. :godot:
