It also sounds downright silly.

How could anyone who has that name be taken seriously?

Ace Attorney in its entirety is a very simplified version of the criminal justice system. It is also very often silly if not downright absurd.

By that logic, how could anyone take the game at all seriously?

Hmm...good point....but usually the silly names and cases and dialouge are placed in the right moment. Like Spark Brushel, or Frank Sahwit....

Shi-Long Lang just does not suit the guy from what I've heard about him....

As a Chinese player of AAI who pronounces him "Lang Shi Long" (family name at first as usual) millions of times,I really don't know what to say in this thread... :payne:

I suppose the "quirk" in his name is the weirdly Chinese-ness, and that just happens to get lost in translation. Maybe the Japanese audience still gets and appreciates the intent? Also, if we kept the eastern method of saying names, it'd be "Lang Shi-Long," which doesn't sound as strange. But that's up to personal opinion, too, so your mileage may vary there also.

Argueably, there isn't any actual meaning behind his name beyond its intent to sound chinese, so in that sense, it suits him exactly. Phonetically it might sound really weird, but it should be the character that makes the name, not the other way around, don't you think? (I mean--taken out of context, if you weren't AT ALL familiar with his character or the games, "Phoenix Wright" sounds sort of strange, too. As a second example, a lot of people had anticipated Housuke being localized as "Lawson," and thought "Apollo Justice" was completely absurd. Which it sort of us. But you get used to it, and then it grows on you.)

People are obviously free to think what they want about the new name, but perhaps it'd be also wise to to reserve judgment til they actually play the game and observe/experience interaction with the character before jumping on Capcom with the beatstick for it.

Now I got it why this topic got a second page in less than one day...
New AAI infos was one thing, but it really was Rou's new name that created such an uproar :p
Personally, I don't mind the new name. I don't exactly love it, but it will probably grow on me quite quickly. :uramidn:

As for LeBlanc, it really sounds French alright. In fact, Blanc is the name of one former yet still famous football player. (Looks like he's a trainer now :o)
So, LeBlanc doesn't strike me as ood, definitely not.

Rou Shi-Long?
It's sounds Chinese, amiright?

But it's not just about him being "Asian," he's from Seihou, which is much closer geographically and culturally to China than it is Japan. His name SHOULD have a Chinese reading. (By the way, anyone know the Chinese reding of Seihou?)

Also, if you're talking about your favorite character, chances are you're talking to another PW fan anyway, so why would they think you sound ridiculous? As if telling a non-fan your favorite character is "Ron DeLite" or "Maximillion Galactica" sounds perfectly reasonably and requires no extra explanation. They ALL have weird names.

Not liking the name is fine but some of you guys are going a little overboard!

(I'll update the names once we get a proper scan)

People just like to complain.

Plenty of the AA names are ridiculous, get over it :yuusaku:

I don't particularly like it but I don't hate it either and I'm not gonna cry over it.

But some people even think Kay Faraday is stupid so..... yeah.

The information revealed will probably be the same as the stuff we saw before the Japanese release. So Wakana and all of the new characters from cases 3 to 5 will probably not be introduced or have their names revealed.
I'd say the only character we're likely to get a name for is Shiina.

Anyway, on the topic of Rou's name...I'm not a great fan of it. However, I'm sure we'll get used to it at release, people hated most of the AJ names when they were first revealed. Klavier, Wocky and Apollo in particular come to mind.

I guess you're right, but the Long and Lang next to each other is making it feel awkward and I can't find any reason why they chose Shi-Long Lang instead of just choosing another chinese name. I guess I'll get used to it, I was going a little overboard...

We probably won't end up finding Wakana's english name until release.

Did it say anything about Shiina's name? She was released around the same time as Rou was, so it makes sense that she'd get a mention, or did they just keep it as "Sheena"?

So think of him as Lang Shi-Long. Or Agent Lang. Or just Lang. They hardly ever use "Shiryuu" in the game so everyone will be calling him Lang, Agent Lang, maybe Inspector/Detective/Investigator Lang.

i agree, it would've been better to have named him "lang shi-long" as that is the way the chinese and japanese name is said.

and just as a note, the "ang" in "lang shi-long" doesn't sound like "bang", it's closer to the "au" in "launch". likewise, the "ong" in "lang shi-long" doesn't sound like "song", it's closer to the "oa" in "loan".

I'll pronounce it SHY Long Lang...doesn't sound so bad really, though - ya'all are just dumping on it because it's not what you expected...
Neither will the rest of the names to come, probably, so you may as well grit those sharp teeth and have done with...something tells me more is to come.

And I doubt they'll change it now - No names that were announced in previous games changed when magazine pictures were released before, so I can't see it happening now. It's his name now, and I pretty much would bet that's the end of it.

If someone is interested in how we read Lang Shi long in Chinese, here is a clip generated by an automatic reading machine:
http://ecl.iflytek.com/ListenToThis/ecl ... andard.mp3

what I could say...this name doesn't really exist as a Chinese name but you know...In some Japanese games and animations they "create" some Chinese-like name so that the caracter "seems" Chinese, but not really "is". They don't care about if the name exists or not.

and to Croik:

I don't find Shi-Long Lang racist, Ping Chang or something would be racist because it's way too stereotypical.

Now that I've seen the magazine, I guess I don't mind the name Shi-Long Lang as much, thank you Franzise for the scans. Too bad we don't see Shiina's english name. :(

Because there are so many Germans named "piano" right?

If the name was clearly offensive and pandering (aka "Long Duck Dong") you could make a case for it being racist, but it's just a "more accurate" pronounciation of the name he already had. I mean, come on, they named him WOLF DRAGON - clearly "Could a real person have this name and not be looked at funny?" was never on their mind!

angeltsubasa, thanks for the readings! I hope they use XiFeng, I think that sounds better than Seihou.

As for Shiina, I don't think they say outright that she's from Seihou, but as Rou's partner (and considering her style of dress) I think you're supposed to assume that she is. The fact that her name is written in Katakana while his is in kanji is a little confusing, though. I hope they'll just keep her ambiguous by using "Sheena."

Y'know what's odd? I didn't really like the name Shi-Long Lang too much when I first heard about it, but now it's starting to warm up to me. I've been trying to avoid spoilers for AAI, but I knew some broad information about Rou and the kind of personality he has. I thought Shi-Long Lang sounded too ridiculous. And I know that some of the AA names are supposed to be ridiculous (one of the aspects of AA that I love,) but I just thought the name didn't fit his personality.

As of a few hours ago, I've been finding the name Shi-Long Lang more aesthetically pleasing and dare I say... sexy? I'm not sure why, though, that's the really odd thing o.0

Also, I now have Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" stuck in my head XD I know Shi and Lang aren't pronounced the way they look, but this happened anyway XD
