The site keeps giving 503 errors and not loading pages completely. I'm having severe problems taking pictures or even navigating the site. Did something happen?

EDIT: Hmm. It seems to have been answered on another thread. Damn these extra threads!

I'm having a problem with the gender showing jigga. I go to the UCP and submit MALE, but it doesn't show up on the forum like it used to.

You have to understand, it gets VERY confusing.

Could you link me to that thread? I really am interested to know what's wrong...

Also, all the pictures are having trouble loading. Whether they are profile pictures, buttons or whatever...

Umm... It's about the timeline on CR. Max, Ini, Matt, and Juan were all 21 during GS2. On the timeline, it says that Ini and Max were born in 1996 and Matt and Juan were born in 1997. I know that Matt and Juan could've become a year older sometime during January or later, but if they aged, then why didn't any of the other characters get older? It was never said in the game when Max, Ini, Matt, or Juan's birthday was.

Sorry, if someone already pointed this out.

It's because it must have been after the New Year. Birthdays have no meaning in the courtroom!

I've got the same issue. I saw that other thread, too, but it doesn't seem like it's being fixed yet. Bleck, bandwidth problems. >__>

The problem is that our server has us by the balls, judging our activity by a "connections" stat that we have no way of monitering. We could probably solve it by upgrading our account to private hosting but it costs more than we can afford. We may have to switch servers, but that costs money too, and it would mean losing the money we've already paid up through Dreamhost (our account is paid up through the end of the year).

Sooooo we are investigating options.

What about external free hosting? for example, most of the Gifs, or Bg.

Would some form of donation drive be appropriate here?

I shudder to think of what will happen when GK's English release shows up in a few months...

Ceres wrote:

Are you referring to sites like Photobucket and Imageshack? Those are designed for temporary, low-usage storage. Most of CR's archives are clearly getting very heavy use and are intended to be permanent.

The issue here is not the files themselves - it's the requests to download the files. This is especially bad when they're all very small size and so the requests start and finish almost instantly. The server's getting request spammed, only the spam is legitimate. Ironically the request cap is more than likely making it worse.

No matter where you put the files, the server host will eventually get stressed out and start throwing limitations and threats around. Solutions to this problem are limited.
Does we even do these things anymore?

A donation drive is always a possibility, but private hosting is at least $150 a month with Dreamhost (more since our traffic is so high - don't know how *much* more, they're not so great about telling those things). Our ad money will cover some but we can't depend on donations to pick up the rest, that is always unreliable. But we might have to have some kind of donation drive to cover the cost of a move to a new server. Wooster found one that might work for us.

I wonder if a torrent with all the sprites packed together would be more efficient?

This. I <3 this idea.

Also, a site the size of CR isn't doing itself many favours by staying an HTML-based site. HTML itself is very efficient for making text look pretty and getting the odd nice image or two in there, but CR is image heavy these days. You'd be better off with a PHP-based system of some kind that allows people to narrow their searches down quickly to the images they want without hammering the server by downloading 100+ other irrelevant images at the same time each time you load a page.

The way CR is currently designed, the server is throttling the downloads so only half the images load on a lot of the busier pages - and each time you refresh it's a totally different half of the page! This can't be good for your bandwidth. :/

A full redesign might be required in the not too distant future.
Does we even do these things anymore?

These 500 errors are starting to get on everyone's nerves now and there's only one way to solve them. We need to put all of the media on mirror sites.

They're getting worse as well, and constant refreshing trying to get a page up can't be making it any better. External hosting is likely to be the only option.

Where should it be hosted, though? We shouldn't use ImageShack, because it has a lot of downtime as well. I recommend PhotoBucket, but I'm sure there are better places than these image hosting sites.

Why does it always happen around this time of year? I find that really odd.

Anyway, moving to this new server Wooster has, as well as not using HTML like Velo said, might be a good idea.

Now I don't really know much about how these types of things work, but how about putting each section of this site in it's own website? like http://www.court-recordssprites.com or something. Spreading things out instead of being a giant conglomerate might work better.

As much as I'd like to grow a money tree Meph is right, they'd need to pay for server space or bandwidth or something like that.
I don't wanna have to start paying for Court-Records just so they can finance this :yuusaku:

It's that rather than paying for one server to host the site, you'd have to pay for several to host the different parts :P

Anyway, we need to think of where we can get the images to be hosted for free. Any ideas? Photobucket is our best suggested option at the moment, but there's definately better ones than that.

If we're talking free imagehosts, I usually use www.majhost.com, which has hotlinking allowed and as far as I know no bandwidth limits. I've never really stress-tested it though, so I can't be sure on that last bit.

Flickr also supposedly has no bandwidth limits, though I think there are some other sorts of limits. Never used it myself.

There's no need to mirror the entire site. Just mirror the media images and then hotlink them onto the HTML pages. ;)

That doesn't do any good if the site itself still won't load, which is the case for many people.

Maybe when the main site becomes more reliable after a while with the mirror, we can go to hotlinking the images.

Lets think about this scientifically :scientific: by looking at the facts and figures and but them together:-

- The HTML pages on the site take take up minimal space.
- The images on the media section of the site take up a lot of space.
- A lot of users want to see the media images and download them.

The reason why you're having this trouble is because tonnes of people want to download those images. If you were to move the images from the media pages onto a different site, the problem would immediately be solved. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about. I've tackled problems like this before.

That's why we took down the sprites, since the problem didn't arise until after the GK sprites were up. But even removing those files (nearly 4000 of them!) has not solved it. In fact some people report it's gotten worse. Nothing will change until Dreamhost lifts their throttle on us. But apparently Dreamhost itself is so flooded with support emails that they've started bouncing ours, so it could be the problem is on a larger scale than we know.

In any case, I want people to still have some access to the content while we work it out. I'm going to be away for a while and when I get back we could be moving to a new server anyway.

Actually, you can't fix it in a day. If it is getting worse, then that makes absolute sense! Dreamhost used to offer limited bandwidth which was renewed on a certain date of each month. You need to wait for that date.

However, the sprites aren't the only problem. All images in the Media pages are to blame. :phoenix:

Edit: doesn't matter anyway, since you'll be moving the site to a new server. :phoenix:

This is a small suggestion... Can you change the Online/Offline images? (Or at least one of them.) Since they are the same size and color, and the only difference between them is the word "Online" and "Offline", which are both similar in length and begin with an O. Like, if you changed Online to a green color, that would make it much easier to tell what it is at a glance or out of the corner of my eye.

Hey Croik/Admins! Is there any chance that CR will be doing an "Ace Attorney Investigations" countdown or something like that similar to what we did back in '08 for Apollo Justice?

Basically I ask because it's been a while since I've played through the games and kinda feel like doing another runthrough, but if there's gonna be any sorta organized mass replaying like last time I wanna wait until then.

We could do the countdown again. But it would have to be rescheduled, since people complained last time that there weren't enough days given to certain cases etc. I almost didn't finish 3-3 on time myself. :keiko:

So yes, there's a pretty good chance of it happening again.

Oh, I had forgotten about the countdown!

Last time, I couldn't handle it, and quit at around 2-2. I agree time lapses should be re-thought.
