Is no one here going to point out that animals don't exactly have the same rights as humans?

The very premise of this case is laughable, and I hope there is more to this case than defending an orca.

DLC existed very early. They used to call it "expansion packs" back then.

Games are special, you can add content to them easily. Imagine trying the same thing with any other medium. It wouldn't be added content, it would require a brand new product.

Reusing the game engine and creating some new content is cheaper than making a completely new game. And sometimes the engine is just fine as it is. The problem here is DLC that is too "small" for people to think of it as valuable and as such demand the content for free.

Some people take offense to locked on disc content. I ask the honest question, how does this differ from additional content delivered by other methods? The answer is that there is an inherent feel that if you own the medium then you should own the content. Is it a rational feeling or is it just people wanting stuff that they believe they have even if they legally don't?

In the end I think the main issue these days is how trivial the extra content is. Is it an added chapter to the story or just a new hat? Is it something people want because it is there to collect or because it has a value to the consumer?

For a game like Street Fighter, DLC = new characters. This enhances the game.
For any game where the STORY actually matters, for me, DLC cheapens the game.
It means you’re paying for a story that wasn’t high enough quality to put into the actual release.
It’s something akin to the GS and GK manga - it’s an optional buy for fans of the game. It’s really not very good. And if you read it, the whole game world feels a little tainted.

Seriously, it's probably just a filler case, which can actually be pretty awesome like 3-2 or 1-5 for example. So if it's a good case why shouldn't you buy it?

Also how do you know it's something taken out from the actual release? :yuusaku:

This case looks like a filler that they agreed could be a DLC case. It probably has little to no relevance to the overall plot. DD is already 5 cases long. I think most people would agree it's a full game.

Good thing capcom is showing us some appreciation to the fans by localizing the DLC :godot:

Because it just means the developer cut away some of the game just to release at an extra cost? Do you like buying 90% of the game and then paying 20-30% of how much the game costs for the content that they cut out? How would you feel if you bought a car and the car dealer said that the air conditioning is deactivated but he could activate it for you at an additional cost?

There is a giant difference.

The parrot was never accused of anything, and the cross-examination only happened because Phoenix and Maya heard it say something relevant to the case (I don't remember what it said exactly). Everyone in court thought they were out of their minds, but they were desperate.

Here you're going to defend an animal charged with murder. I'm sorry but that just crosses the line for me. It may turn out to be a great case, but I'll never be able to take it seriously.

There are animal lawyers you know.

Of course the 'trial' wouldn't be the same though, it'd be some other kind of court proceeding where they decide to put a dog 'to sleep' or something after the victim sues. Indeed, the lawyer in the case will advocate on the dog's behalf, if the owners get such a lawyer instead of having it put down by default.

By the way, if someone got attacked by a captive orca, well sure sue the aquarium or something but why the heck kill the animal over it? A zoo animal isn't the same as a pet in the community. They're in cages for a reason. 'Killer Whale'? You hear about people being attacked by their 'pet tiger' and things but you have to wonder why they thought you could have a 'pet' tiger in the first place? Have you even seen kittens play? Now transpose that to a tiger....

Now we all know that REALLY there was another murderer and the orca was framed, so of course it's more complex.

Anyone thinking this might be 'inspired' by the Edgeworth Dolphin case that never ended up in AAI?

I agree having such a joke-sounding case as Phoenix's very first trial back is a bit... of a rip off though.

It feels like the consumer is being tricked. People assume they bought the entire game. If other stuff is made LATER ON, it's fine because it wasn't ready yet, like season 2 of a TV show. But it's just coercive to find out that oh no you didn't really get the whole game you just have to keep paying. And once you bought it you still have to unlock the rest of it with yet more money and more and more. It's like those so-called F2P games except the start isn't even free either. Since people already made the initial investment they're more likely to pay so the part they already paid doesn't feel like a waste, even though they weren't aware of the total cost upfront.
Starts to sound like this.

Of course there are animal lawyers, but Phoenix isn't one - why is this in an Ace Attorney game? Why would we care about an orca which would sooner just be put down if there was a witness rather than put on trial?

This isn't silliness, it's absurdness bordering on idiocy.

Imagine if they put Winston Payne in charge of this...

You know the whole "OMG, an Orca will be Phoenix first client!!!1" is most likely stretching the truth just to gain attention, anyway. Like the beginning of case 3-3 with all the "Oh no, Phoenix lost a case! Wait what, there is a second Phoenix?" stuff that wasn't important for the actual storyline at all.

Well, we already had incredibly stupid cases like 2-1 and the before mentioned 3-3 (though 3-3 at least was a fun case), but I think the advertisement for a case isn't the best way to conclude whether it will be stupid or not. Usually they're exaggerating things or just present us unsolved mysteries which appear to be supernatural but actually are not.

My guess is that probably the girl is the actual defendant (maybe they accuse her of having trained the orca to kill a co-worker or whatever), but considering how close they appear to be, she asks Phoenix to defend the Orca as well. I don't know, maybe something like that.

My point still stands, however - if it is indeed the orca we'll be defending, I won't be able to take the case seriously.

I know that, but Phoenix as a lawyer can take non-murder cases. It's convoluted, but not impossible the way you're implying. I don't like the thing people keep saying (other people elsewhere have posted identical wording) about how the orca doesn't have any right to a fair trial. Like you should just kill off an animal if it's accused of killing someone. It might not have human rights but there is still legal rights given to animals (or should be). If a captive orca killed someone (like a guest) it would be the aquariums' fault not the orca's.

Indeed, as a 'Murder Trial' it's sounding a bit more like those stupid middle ages trials where they trialled a pig for murder and that kind of thing though, as if it had human intent to murder. But it's not confirmed that this won't be plotted as just a standard legal procedure not a murder trial.

Lusankya wrote:

We can't judge the case, but we can judge how it's promoted. It seems weird to promote Phoenix's first case back, instead of being important, as something which at least sounds ludicrous. The tone is just not.. serious. And since this is DLC, the promotion IS important in determining the writers' (promoters?) attitude to this case.

I don't think the tone is supposed serious. I'm of the impression that they want to make sure that people don't assume this is something that was taken from the game. It's a fun--not necessarily fluff, but almost--case that you don't need to fully understand the story but if you do play enhances the story further. Besides, silly cases are fun, and I think there have been things in the series at least as absurd as defending an orca.

The Orca is not outside his aquarium, he's in the pool and he's just flopped up poolside, like he's been trained to do. Have you ever been to Sea World, they do that all the time?

I agree though, that the premise here is just completely idiotic. Why would this came seem appealing to anyone with half a brain aside from the fact that it's extra content for the game? I expect it to turn out differently but I hate how every case in GS5 has to start with something unusual, but this case crosses the line. Now it's completely nonsensical, and no the 3-3 comparison doesn't work lad. The other people in court with Phoenix' phony were Payne and the Judge, two of the least brightest characters in the series. That case didn't build on something that was unrealistic to the Ace Attorney universe but this one does. It's like a complete case based on gag-reel. Animals have different rights and there's no reason Phoenix should put up with this.

Remember that it's not the "Wright & Co. Law Offices" anymore, but the "Wright ANYTHING Agency".
Perhaps that has something to do with it? Also, has it been said that this is a murder trial?

I still don't get it why some people got worked-up over a DLC. If you think about it, you have the option not to buy it since it doesn't effect the actual DD storyline, think of it as sidequest if you will. But for those who don't mind defending an "orca" and want to play extra cases, buy the DLC then. Afterall, each individual has the right to spend their money on what they think will be worth it.

Anyway, I'm just glad we will get some DLCs over here, though I'm a bit curious what the Quiz DLC contain. Too bad, it will not get translated.

After playing the first part of the Quiz DLC, some of the questions seemed like they could be translated over, others not so much. It reminds me a little bit like Layton, but i'm sure that the costumes will come via another dlc pack.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that the Japanese price and release date for Turnabout Return has been revealed.
http://www.capcom.co.jp/gyakutensaiban/5/dlc_contents.html#ext

Release Date: August 15, 2013
Price:800 yen (roughly $8)

From August 15 to September 12, the case will be half off, so 400 yen (roughly $4).

By the way, the main page of the Court Records site states that the half-price promotion ends on December 9 instead of September 12. That's an error as I'm sure 9月12日 means September 12.
