Spoiler: story

The stage is the present age. Phoenix Wright of the chief character is a lawyer setting up the small office in crime city New York.

One day news of the member of the Upper House killing spreads. He was surprised. Leona Clyde of the suspect was a lover of the old days of Phoenix. It was a classmate from the time when Phoenix was childish, and Leona was the woman that it was it to a lawyer with will to want to save the human being of a weak viewpoint. Phoenix believing innocence of Leona defends her. Leona insists that oneself is a criminal. She who shut a heart did not have the former feature.

Before Phoenix believing innocence of Leona, a big wall blocks it. It was cool-headed excellent Prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth that were talked about when I did anything to gain guilt to insist that it was a crime of Leona. In fact, he was a classmate of the time when Phoenix was childish.

A trial begins. Three childhood friends who meet again in a court. Phoenix which fights I believe innocence of Leona, and to get closer to the truth. Seemed whether innocence of Leona was proved; unexpected tragedy waited then. How does Phoenix reverse in the situation of the desperate situation? Does Leona hold a heart again? Does Miles drive a childhood friend to guilt?

Sounds intriguing, although I'm kinda disappointed that they threw Larry out and replaced him with Leona. Hm ...
But interesting nonetheless!

The character page has corrected "Edge Worth" to "Miles Edgeworth," which I suppose is a small step forward...? :D; Otherwise, I'm still not impressed by the musical.

It would take...it being something the rest of us could enjoy instead? :keiko:

I appreciate Capcom putting effort into the series, but it's kind of the equivalent of a very expensive and showy fanfiction. I mean, when they did the Devil May Cry anime, it wasn't very good, but at least it took place in a timeline that made sense as a lead in to DMC4. I didn't see the whole thing, but judging from what I did, you could easily assume some parts of it fit into canon. It was a little side glimpse that you couldn't have done in game form, and added a little extra to characters people liked.

(Of course, I thought it was OOC and pretty blarg, but at least the attempt made sense, sort of).

But the musical obviously has no interest in sticking to canon, and is featuring lawyer Phoenix, something that canon itself has already moved past. If they're going to do side stuff, there is plenty they could dive into that would fit with the games, please fans, AND lead into the next games. They're asking fandom to look back when I would rather look forward.

If the musical stared Edgeworth and explored his past at least you could say it was leading into Kenji. That's something I could be interested in. Instead it's like...AU filler. And at $80 per DVD, I just can't work up any enthusiasm for it.

Buuuut I'll go update the news page anyway~ :minuki:

Edge Worth's appearance and trappings are so...feminize to me, somehow now I really hope they are going to change his gender into female in the opera.*shot*

Thank you for the news!=D

At least they made it clear that the musical story is utterly uncanon, so I will just take it as an ordinary fan work~

Yeah, it sounds like they got rid of Larry for Leona. It somehow seems like I've heard this story before...

Also, what was that video on their website about? It showed characters and then said Yes or No. Huh? This is why I should learn Japanese.

I'm with Croik... I'm not really impressed by this. I was excited when it was first announced, but this does seem like a bad fanfiction now (though I really don't mind the 'looking back'... tie-ins tend to make me cringe), and the whole childhood friend/ex-lover crying "I'm guilty" angle gives me bad vibes. It's like they put Larry, Dahlia, and Lana in a blender and Mary Sue popped out.

And don't get me started on the actresses for Phoenix and Edgeworth. (It is Edgeworth now, wright? One word?). My friend summed up Phoenix quite well with the phrase "cowlick from Hell", and I think it has more effect if I leave it at that.

BUT despite my misgivings I'll probably find some way to see it, anyway, just because I'm a fantard.

I'm kinda ... indifferent about it. I love musicals, I really do, but ...

First point: - without being hateful towards my own gender here - All characters are played by women. Eh ... yeah, it's fine if they are good actresses and such, but ... It's still pretty ... strange?
Second point: The story is ... ehm ... okay? It's not that great, but still pretty interesting. Although it bugs me that we have this series with a great and intriguing storyline, but the storyline of the musical based on this series is just ... okay?

Two points which make me go "... Uhm, yeah, okay" every time we get more news about this.
But I have to admit that I'm really looking forward to the music.

Takarazuka is an opera company only women actors inheriting Japanese old tradition of the foundation for 1914.
(You may regard it as discrimination of sex...)

As for Japanese "Kabuki" continuing from the 17th century, actors are only men. They can play a woman position.

It's amazing on the costumes the appearances these women can pull off with just makeup.

I mean have you seen the actress's normal photo pre-Edgeworth? She's like an adorkable geeky-looking Japanese girl.

just saw the pics on the front of CR and I have to wonder...

Where's Phoenix's attorney's badge???

It's the one piece of evidence you always have, the one thing you present when you have no clue what to do next, and they left it off the suit? That seems like a really key detail to overlook with how important it is to the story in the games. Maybe this is an early promo shot, or a scene before he earns his badge (like in law school). It would be sad if they forgot about it or left it off altogether.

Can't say I like what they did with "his" hair either. While Nick hair is crazy to recreate, I would've liked to see spikes. Srsly, I look at this and see Matt Engarde.

As a cosplayer, this is more than a bit disappointing. I would have thought they'd get closer on the character details than they did.

You would think as a theatre group they would have more access to products and techniques to recreate Phoenix's hair? Like I've said before, if cosplayers can do it, professionals should be able to do it too.

As I said, I'm fine with a theatre group where all actors are female, it's just a bit strange when it comes to playing something with both male and female characters.

And I'm also not really confident regarding the looks. I've seen cosplayers doing a lot better than this here.

That's pretty much what Takarazuka does, though: takes stories featuring men and women and portray them with just women. It's not any different than when playhouses in Europe only used male actors.

...Can you imagine a male troupe doing PW? Male Mia and Maya... :meekins:

*ahem* Anyway, I think the costumes themselves look pretty sharp (at least Phoenix's suit is going to stand out from the back row!) but Phoenix's hair really is wonky.

Though now I am wondering what other characters are going to be in the show. If it's a 1-1 reinactment with Edgeworth still being a jerk, does that mean Mia's alive or no? Will Maya show up? I'm starting to get the feeling there's going to be a lot more original characters.

This reminds me of every Shakespeare play with a kissing scene it. Back in his time women weren't allowed to be actors, so all the women parts were played by men. Young boys usually played the more delicate female characters (i.e. Juliet, Ophelia), and older men played the more powerful/forceful female characters (i.e. Juliet's Nurse, Gertrude).

I think having male Mia and Maya would be interesting if it was also done in an androgenous style. However, I'm interested to see what any other canon characters look like with the Takarazuka treatmeant.

Wow. It's an alternate reality - what if 'Larry' had been a girl? Due to the butterfly effect, everything changes... but Phoenix and Edgeworth are still lawyers! (I guess Female Larry didn't steal money and was more studious. But Phoenix didn't get the right hair!)

Leona Larr'y' / Lana... but where is the 'eo' from? Or the Clyde? Oh well.

And I wonder when in the 'timeline' this is suposed to be set? I hope poor Edgeworth isn't set up as a bad guy.

The nice thing is that it's so far removed from the canon reality, we don't have to worry about trying to incorporate it.
Pickens wrote:

I suppose they hope they can get new fans? Who will turn up to play PW1 only to find... Larry on screen, not Leona.

Or maybe they think they'll play GS4, and think this is Hobohodo's shady backstory? [I hope Leona doesn't turn up in GS5. It would never fit into the 1-3 timeline.]

Or maybe this is to get more people to attend their orchestra concerts, which they seem to be pretty into. That kind of might make sense? Then people would go to the orchestra after the musical without even having to play the games.

Perrydotto wrote:

Male Franziska. :nick-heart: No, Phoenix and Edgeworth as girls just doesn't work for me. But the songs might be interesting.

The songs might be interesting? Where else will you hear a heartfelt ballad about the true meaning of a lawyer?

About Phoenix (Phoenixia in girl form?) I hate hate hate her hair. In the first picture we had of her she had kinda spiky hair, so what's with the Donald Trump/Combover/superglued to her head look? Whatever I'll watch it for the lulz.

Takarazuka column No. 1
http://www.capcom.co.jp/gyakutensaiban/ ... olumn.html

Takarazuka column No. 1

Hello, Gyakuten Saiban's fans.I am Kei Suzuki of the Takarazuka opera's director.

My talking to people since a concert of September. For these three months, I work out a design, and I am pressed by writing, and it is three weeks to a lesson start.

I studied Ryuuichi Naruhodou and Reiji Mitsurugi's character and lines in games. And I pursue direction to have Gyakuten Saiban's fans enjoy a game and ties with the stage, and I write a script now.

I carry Nintendo DS which set Gyakuten Saiban and official fan books recently. These became my Bible!

I played it at every free time, played and played. I am proud of time when I played it.

I include the love drama of Phoenix Wright in the stage of the Takarazuka opera. You may enjoy ballad of the love (!?) to sing of Phoenix and songs of Miles Edgeworth new one side that exceeded a world of the game console.

Takarazuka opera Sky group performance "Gyakuten Saiban -Yomigaeru Shinjitsu-", The preparations advance steadily. Please look forward to.

On the next time, Tom Ranju as Phoenix Wright who appeared in the video visit at the time of concert is going to come to play. In fun!

Nick...is a girl?! Couldn't they find a nice Tenor for him or something? Is it a culture thing I'm missing out on? Are japanese opera's like panto's where every role is played by the opposite gender of the actual character? :yuusaku: And how do they plan on tieing this Leona into it as well? Is she gonna be the one who nicked Edgey's money way back when or something? :sadshoe: Frankly I'm thinking the fanmade Phoenix Wright musical is looking better if it ever gets finished.

Takarazuka is an opera company only women actors inheriting Japanese old tradition of the foundation for 1914.

Please watch this if you want to know what's Takarazuka.

WHAT. THE. HELL?!?!?

I'm on Croik's side here. This musical is not looking like it will be that great. I'm fine with a all-female cast, but if they can't even get the costumes look like their counterparts....and what's with the Larry/Lana character? If they want a girl pleading guilty, they should have done something based on Rise From the Ashes. Also, the story seems meh and it's like Dahlia/Phoenix's.

I think I'll wait for the reviews on this.

Don't whine, At least it's something, and hopefully it will lead to even more large scale GS projects.
