I found Maya to be mature enough if you put her perkyness aside, so in that sense she can return being the same as she used to, but when it comes to design and animations they can't just do what they did to Pearl and call it a day IMO. Pearl's design was kind of okay at first but then they just had all her old animations and some of Maya's. Stuff like her "hmm" animation where she sticks her thumb up to her mouth or her "dawww!" animation didn't really seem appropriate for how she'd aged and the language was off too with how she still said "Mr. Nick" and "Mystic Maya". It just seemed like she'd have grown out of that by her age.

It's been 9 years by the time this story begins. Maya has to have changed in some way, if only slightly.

Given the letter in DD though, you'd think Maya's chemistry with Nick would remain intact though, so she wouldn't need to be all awkward about how to address him. The change should maybe be more like where 19-year-old Maya would say "Yooo Nick!", AA6-Maya would go "Oh, hi Nick!"

Maya can be serious when she needs to be. That quality shouldn't change.

I don't care if Maya is re-introduced like she's 19 all over again, as long as when it comes to serious moments, she doesn't act as clueless or lost as she used to. Rather than the cute reply of "We don't have enough information!" I'd appreciate something like "Well, I don't think you'll be get more info by talking with me again, Nick." Sure, throw in a little sass if it helps. It actually makes her more reminiscent of Mia.

No, I don't see Maya acting more refined, since she's not quite like her mother. Maybe she will be when she grows older, but for now, she's still only in her late 20s. No matter what reason Maya has for stopping by this country, she is a tourist, first and foremost! And Nick's wallet will face some arduous tasks... at least, if she can scrounge off of him.

Of course, if she really does come to this country for political reasons and the situation requires that she step forth as a representative of her clan, that will be the ideal moment to show us just how much she's grown. Granted, my clan conspiracy theory is still a theory that needs more empirical evidence, but I truly have no other idea of how they can integrate Maya into this game without shoehorning her in as a surprise cameo. (I'm looking at you, Klavier...)

Probably the most likely is the whole political representation thing. That would actually be really interesting as Maya's motivation for being there, especially since it would show the leadership of Maya's (presumed) role as Master of Kurain. That brings up another question though: how the hell do the politics in Kurain work?! Is it like the Kurain Village in the original trilogy is some sort of subclan to the Kingdom of Kurain or something?

It makes sense in context, though. Under Maya's much more lenient guidance, Pearl wouldn't have outgrown many of her quirks. Maya is big sister material, not mom material.

I agree it was rather cheap to give Pearl some of Maya's animations and call it a day. It's a cute homage, but little else.

The way I think of it, it's less about her chemistry with Nick and more about how she views her position, as well as how others view her. And with a stuck-up princess who holds and is held to the highest standards all the time, there will be some level of conflict between the two. At the same time, they will have some nice parallels.

I can imagine a scene where Maya and Leyfa, after some sort of rivalry between them, reconcile with each other. Being the older one, Maya could offer a few words of advice and essentially become a spiritual mentor to the other. A simple scene like this would seal the deal for me.

...but I admit that I really just want to see a sassier Maya in the meantime.

We can only speculate~~

If you ask me, the Fey clan and the Kingdom of Kurain are merely distantly related, either by this mysterious "founder" character that the Kurain people keep praying to, or by some sort of collective origin. I would not be pleased to hear that Leyfa and Maya are related like family. We've moved out of the country to avoid that topic! ...at least, that's what I hope.

Maya has given Phoenix the bill many many times before, why wouldn't she do it now? Whether she is on her vacation wouldn't matter too much. She still can think Phoenix can treat her.

It's called being a mature adult. You take care of your own bills. And she would realize what a disgusting thing that is. She's the Master of Kurain and Phoenix a lawyer, who apparently barely ever gets paid. I dunno, sounds to me like she would be more capable of paying easily.

I'm sure Yamazaki won't try to change Maya's personality too much if she is in GS6. Changing her immaturity's taking away an aspect people liked about her! I'm sure she'll want to search for burgers and have Nick pay XD (If they even sell burgers in Kurain). I'm also sure she'll try to use her status as master to try and get free souvenirs or something? Maybe instead of Nick treating her she'll say:
:maya: "Hey Nick! Let's get some burgers, my treat!"
:think-pw: "(That's a first. Since when does she not expect me to pay?)"
:maya: "Being the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique I'm sure they'll just hand 'em right over!"
:nick: "Ah. So you were hoping for a freebie..."

Even as an adult, the concept of treats still exists. I'd like to think I am at least a semi-adult, and I still treat my friends plenty. And the fact my friends have more money or a higher income doesn't matter.

Isn't Mystic Maya her title though, i don't think it's too far out for Pearl to still be calling her that even as a teenager.

There's a difference between treating someone 'sometimes' and 'repeatedly' to constantly. And Phoenix didn't treat Maya, she mooched off him. There's a difference.

Fanfiction has done that for years, trust me. Just like the Wright Brothers joke. You'd think they would've pulled that earlier, but nope: they were waiting specifically for the third game to pull that one.

I'm still worried he can get her characterization right in the first place. I still think Edgeworth in GK1 and 2 was a watered down Edgeworth, at least when compared to his PWAA self, and Nick in DD was okay but not always as witty and sometimes a bit out of his touch. (I thought the "Mummy man" line was odd, and I thought the overreactions in 5-5 are jarring. I'm playing through 1-4 in the 3DS Trilogy now, and Nick never makes his "AAAAGH!" reactions unless he has an epiphany or something)

Truth be told though... I think Maya wasn't completely at her best in PLvPWAA. It felt like Takumi remembered some of her quirks and played them too safe. Think about the number of times she pulls the joke where Nick ends up saying "I wish you wouldn't look at ME when you say that".

EDIT: Hey, you know what would actually be funny? If both Gaspen and Winston teamed up in an attempt to copy the Anything Agency with their "Lead defense" roles, plus I'm getting some mario-brothers vibes from Gaspen and Winston already.

I actually enjoyed Maya's character a lot during that game. Sure, some of the jokes were a bit repetitive, but that didn't keep me from enjoying it.

Maya's 125% comfortable around Nick and she won't change how she addresses him. If anything, reuniting the two of them will have them acting like their younger selves in no time and probably forgetting Apollo and Athena are even there as they catch up. Even if she makes him pay for burgers for old time's sake he wouldn't even object. Don't forget this is the same older Phoenix who footed the bill for his two employees by choice. He's probably making a prettier penny at this point. Besides, it's Maya. Of course he'd pay.

I fully expect to see Maya as a competent, successful Master of Kurain by now. Her character arc in the original trilogy had her maturing and eventually accepting her role (or burden, depending on how you look at it) as Master of Kurain even though it conflicted with her desire to stay in the city with Phoenix doing the job she found for herself. By now, she'll have things under control and I want to see her as the political leader the Master was said to be yet, naturally, still Maya at the core. She won't be the same teenager she used to be now that she's going to be 28 but that doesn't mean she won't still love her children's TV shows or probably show up to Kurain meetings in her pajamas or something.

Maya's role as a character was always in direct contrast with the somber mysteries of spirit channeling and that's part of what makes her so multifaceted and wonderful. Basically, I want to see the rookie lawyers of the agency react to their boss giving a sophisticated figure of power a piggy back ride.

A fan of Maya much? :maya: Not that it's a bad thing, but damn, you tried harder than some people ever try on any of their writing assignments at my school. Since Capcom has been (usually; I'm looking at you GK 2 :tigre: ) good to us for most of the series 14 years (11 years in the US), it'd make the most sense that they'd go down this route. All aboard the GS6 hype train, next stop Kingdom of Kurain :will:

As I said (here? elsewhere?), she'd make a wonderful foil to Leyfa, who seems to take the traditions of spirit channeling very seriously. I simply can't wait to see these two go head to head in some sort of rivalry.

As long as it's not up the temple steps. Nick would die. Or at least collapse after the first few minutes.

But thinking about it, the majestic temple grounds are probably where the courthouse is held as well...

Maybe it's just me, but the dev team seems to have an in-universe reason to make Nick's model slimmer than before.

It's not really a matter of "trying", I just threw down what I thought on the subject. Of course, over-analyzing these characters is sort of my night job. It's hard to turn off.

Oh yeah, I'm crossing all my fingers for Leifa being Maya's rival character instead of Phoenix's. With "Princess" being the only conceivable role in Kurain that could be higher than Master, it works perfectly.

He's gotten more serious and buff in his official artwork each passing game. Somewhere in some stuffy attic there's a portrait of him getting older, flabbier, and goofier.

I have to say, if they did, I'd be on Leifa's side instantly. Mostly cause I think, if you are in a position of power, you should act the role when in public. If you want to goof off and look silly, you can do that in your free time... but not when you're on the job. (I mean, you can't act goofy when working in an office or store, either. You'd get in trouble and look horribly unprofessional)

Aren't the parallels amazing? We have nevertalk who clearly pays attention to the source material, and in turn makes excellent and immediately agreeable ideas.
Then we have CatMuto... who doesn't, and just posts salt.

I continue to wonder if this must actually be the plot, myself. With Maya gone for so long her return would be a big deal to the series, and thus making it mudane would be selling it short. If AAI2 is any indication they sure do love their callbacks. While experience suggests the key reasons they haven't announced her yet, assuming she is returning, is they either are sticking to a schedule or they simply can't at this time (asset creation and what not), however it's also just as possible she's just that entrenched in the plot. Yes, there's many different possibilities here, but lets stick with the most obvious.

Now that brings up an interesting question; If so, how exactly is that going to play out? Maya having a rival is certainly an idea that's been floated before (which got changed and resulted in the creation of Pearl), but then what was the original idea there, and how would it play out now that she's the Master? What does a Master and a "Princess" have to compete against each other with?
Could it specifically be a callback to DL-6 (i.e, the logical extension as to why it's a bad idea), seeing as they are using spirits as infallible testimony? Actually, that would also explain the theory presented as to Maya asking to Phoenix to come to TKoKurain in the first place, seeing as she would be a very key person to have a problem with such a thing.

"What does a Master and a "Princess" have to compete against each other with?" Was a serious question by the way. I'm honestly interested in ideas on this.

Excuse you? :ron: I pay attention to the source material and I saw nothing that made it look like Maya 'found' the assy position. Mia told her to do so and Phoenix had better just deal with it, because his late boss said it. Maya didn't find it herself.

Nothing. Both are born into their position.

Phoenix and Maya were forced together by circumstance, so it's not that she "found" the position so much as she made it what it is.

Also, you act like Phoenix doesn't even want Maya around. The guy rushed to the train station while hung over just to get her to stay. Plus, he was immediately appreciative of her presence from the start:

We don't know. It's just that to have a rival character you need someone of similar strength or power. Until the nation of Kurain existed in lore, we all just assumed Maya was at the top. They must have made someone more powerful for a reason.

My conspiracy theory is being ignored, I see...

Considering the similarity between the name of the kingdom and the channeling technique supposedly founded by Ami Fey, doesn't that ring any bells? I too thought it was coincidence at first, but then I began to think deeper. Isn't it possible the Fey clan and the Kurain Kingdom used to have some sort of shared origin? If the Kurain people honor the name of this "founder" they speak of so much, it would complicate things if it turns out this founder wasn't Ami Fey. It would be like this "Ami Fey" person essentially ripped off their brand of spirit channeling or something.

Now, I don't doubt that Ami Fey did indeed begin the Kurain tradition in the Fey clan, but I have to wonder why an entire kingdom based on spirituality would flourish in some other country while it struggled in Japan. While the effect DL-6 had on the Feys could have made some impact, that was merely one case that extended for 15 or so years. Their histories go back centuries. Was there so sort of historical clash between the two groups, back when the Kurain people were a much smaller form of civilization? Did Kurain flourish because that was where it originated, or did they merely "win" that war?

So many questions to ask and none to answer. I'm telling ya, guys. I'm not getting this hyped over this game just because I think Maya's coming back. This is some juicy mystery to solve!

How big will your disappointment be if that is not the case? (Or even your conspiracy theory is wrong?)

The big mystery's revelation is that the founder of Kurain's technique wasn't Ami Fey, it was Kyoko Ayasato.

I will be pretty disappointed, but it's nothing to get riled up over. It just means my theory was wrong, as usual, and I was just being annoying despite my efforts to guide some discussion along during this long wait between news announcements.

Still, if it's not the case, what will the game be about? Nick getting a new superpower and a new hot teenaged female assistant / love interest who apparently is an actual princess this time? Geez, I knew they were taking the extra mile to turn him into Superman, but that's just mean. :p

Obviously it's about that. Though, as we all know, Nick already has a canon love interest - Pearl. When she was 8. Yes. So I have no idea why they are even bringing a new one in. I mean, after playing JFA, nobody even believed that Ema was a potential love interest.

Well, someone's gotta push along the Phoenix underaged harem train. And while we're at it, #charleyforassistant2016.

Kidding aside, what do you really think it'd be about if Maya were not involved in the slightest? I'm having trouble figuring out an alternative plan for this game should your predictions come true instead.

I can imagine all sorts of conversations taking place at the most serious moments.
:phoenix: Jeez! Our defendant's on trial for supposedly having stalked a woman for months, before finally breaking into her home, waiting for her to return from work, and then proceeded to kill and eat her! And everything is pointing at him! Fingerprints at the crime-scene, he has no alibi at all, questionable 'spots' on his intestinal x-rays and even his best friend thinks he did it...!
:cookie: ...
:phoenix: Dammit, Charley, this is not the time to tell me to prune you!

Cookie to represent Charley, since we don't seem to have a charley emoticon

Your idea overall might be neat, or even correct, but I just have this feeling Maya won't appear. Call me pessimistic, but I think they know that, if they brought Maya in, half of the audience will yell "You changed her!" if they change her and the other half will complain "She's identical to 10 years ago!" if they don't change her. And rather than risk doing something that would impact them that badly, they refrain from having Maya appear at all.

It's already giving me sort of a GK vibe with how it has this new kingdom/country and I find a lot of Yamazaki's style has to do with this kind of thing, so I'm sure there's going to be some sort of "Allebahst/Babahl" plot in this game too, (which isn't really a good thing IMO) or some backstory about this Kurain people and their wannabe magatamas :P

I think Maya is in this, but I do actually fear she'll get the Edgeworth DD (shaft) role.

Edgeworth hasn't been doing anything but spinoffs and last-case-cameos since JFA. DD was no different, really.

AA6 is taking place in the Kingdom of Kurain and this entire game is about spirits and the dead. From what little we know it sounds like they built this whole game around Maya and her accompanying mythos. If she's just a cameo I'd be really surprised. At the very least they're going to go full fan service and have her reprise her role as assistant for the final case and Edgeworth just happens to show up for no reason to prosecute so we can have the Nick/Maya vs. Edgeworth classic battle again.

Edgeworth would probably also come, or get someone else to, he despises channeling spirits after "that".

I can understand Maya returning as assistant again for old times' sake. I don't think I can understand Edgeworth returning yet again as prosecutor. We got that in DD. It's enough. He can make a cameo at the end credits or even in a DLC case if there is one, but he shouldn't get his hands mixed up in Kurainian business in the meantime, especially if he himself requested for Nick to head there in the first place. What will he be doing there anyway? He's not a public prosecutor anymore; he's Chief Prosecutor. There's a huge difference.

Franziska, on the other hand... since she's been working with Interpol, I wouldn't be surprised if she's still stubborn enough to face off against Nick yet again. Maturity is one thing; stubbornness is another. And maybe she can finally throw that card she's been holding onto all this time at his face and get it over with. Of course, one of the cases would then need to tie in with Interpol. Instead of Lang, though, since his business is exclusive to Zheng Fa, we might even get to meet a new agent.

Still, I wouldn't hold out for Interpol getting involved until, say, the final case. Then just maaaybe...
