Sounds fair. It would definitely level the playing field down up to some extent. But it'd make people who've been gearing their characters up for the following year (like me ;3;) very sad pandas. Would a published character with a huge do-over be allowed to enter...? *crosses fingers*

Croik's suggestions just now were blatant extremes and needn't seriously be considered, but they do highlight several key points when it comes to the development and organization of the OC contest:
  • It is a competition. There will be winners clearly placed above other entrants.
  • Entrant publicity/popularity is a concern for reasons of fairness, but Court-Records.net does not have the resources to fully monitor or control the effects of popularity.
  • The OC contest itself must be structured to limit the effects of popularity that damage its competitive nature.
The third point is exercised somewhat in the current practice of placing the polling link at the very end of the finalist listings (it was also mentioned that external linking would be "vigilantly" monitored, though by what means I cannot presume).

When it comes to alternative award systems, I think Arkillian's idea for recognizing the top finalists is a fine compromise. Jostling for a single one-shot prize can create an element of disparity (and despair) in lower-ranked entrants. Rewarding them for getting even this far might encourage them to produce better work. There has been a study that suggested "non-talented" students who were rewarded for their effort vastly improved in performance over their "talented" peers who were lauded for natural skill when both groups were presented with increasingly difficult challenges.

Hon- no offence, but perhaps it'd be better to suggest with a VISUAL how the layout could be better than complaining about it.
Pending.

Uuuuuuhhhhh, why does it need to be turned into something so serious??

The fun is slowly getting sucked out of this contest now.

If people don't like the way it's run, they shouldn't enter. Then they won't act all bitter if they don't win anything.

I agree with this. I considered entering, not because of the prize or so, just because it would be fun to enter a competition. Just the idea of entering and other people watching, and of course, making the sprite should be enough. Winning is always nice of course, but it's not only about winning.
It should be fair of course, but yeah.
It's all ment to be nice for the people here, not to cause problems, right?

There's going to be winners and there's going to be losers. Everyone shouldn't get butthurt because they didn't win. And Croik should run things the way she wants to. It's her site. If you're not happy with it, don't enter or go make your own site and have your own contest.

Congrats to those who did win.

Well done to all the winners, and anyone else who entered the competition too. =] I only looked at the sprites, but seriously, they were brilliant. <3

I can see the appeal but like Nii said, if you make a character with thoughts of entering them some year (like I'm kinda planning, since it creates both an entry and fills an important character slot in a story) but can't because they appeared in another story, that definitely bites. Even if it's not a case of making the character for more than one thing but just making something, working with it, and going 'oh! This would be awesome to enter!' and then not being able to does too.

Anyway, that aside, congrats to the winners! Definitely had fun reading through all the entries and how much it varies from year to year.

I appreciate the suggestions but there are reasons we do things the way we do right now. It's not easy to juggle between giving everyone an equal chance and also giving them the freedom to develop their characters in public. Or between letting the community particpate in voting and eliminating prejudice. But in the end we always get a lot of good entries, and like looby said, it's all about fun. Even if someone doesn't win I hope people will be drawn to their characters, learn more about them, and be inspired themselves.

Between now and next year, I'm going to see if I can find a more secure voting option, but other than that I can't say I'm interested in changing the rules far from what they are now. To anyone thinking of entering my advice is to get your OCs out there as soon as possible! Work on your craft and get some feedback. We could have a long wait before the next game, after all~

Yeah- OCs are important for my interest in the game :) Waiting for the next to come out can make the passion go stale. The fandom keeps me going. I couldn't see there being much improvement on the way it's run. Perhaps people who have made winning OCs can advise any newbees on how to make them- I know alot of people are all 'where do I start' with them :(
