So anyone want to write an unpacker application for the out files? I could do it.

EDIT: Been there, parsed that. I am just going to do some ui cleanup before releasing.
EDIT2: It is done, get it here.

As for the sprite color limits, that is due to the hardware. It only has a palette size of 256 entries, that can either be used for one 256 color palette or 16 palettes of each 16 colors.

In any case, I am really looking forward to the rest of the HD rips. Will there be any noticeable changes, or any news regarding when the HD Rips section will be up on the website? I'd like to see how the rest of them will turn out. :)

I originally suggested to Croik that we turn the DS images into links to the HD ones, but mentioning I had almost 1,500 images the idea was more or less thrown out due to to sheer mountain that would be. Never mind we're behind on the GK2 material. And since I don't really touch the main site, I think we'll at least for the time being settle for download links.

Anyways, I've just got GS3-5 to sort, and to go back on GS1-2, and we may have 'something' tonight. Though, I may hold off on that until I can create some tutorial PSDs for those of us interested in creating the sprites while we wait on the .out files to be fully understood. Nothing worse then having people do work and provide material, and having it be useless because things weren't positioned right.

Okay, the moment most of you are waiting for.

First, Here's an example PSD. It'll show you some useful tricks and some formatting that'll help you help us. Don't bother playing with the sprites until you've taken a look at this.

http://hobohodo.court-records.net/rips/ ... xample.psd

Next, the archive. Sorted. But, not exhaustive. Still need to find the stuff for the endings. And there may be some redundant files from GS1-2, but I'm a bit sick of looking at them. Now YOU can have a turn at being sick of looking at them!

It would've been brilliant if this game used the zoom speedlines from TGS. That looked brilliant and futuristic. I'm trying to animate the current ones and it doesn't really fit...

EDIT: I've noticed that the judge's brother has two different sprite sets. Would that be because of his aging from 3-4 to 3-5?

There are redundant sheets, we know that much. But how many is another question.

And zoom? Are you talking about the blue background, or panning between lawyers and witnesses?

In that case, it's a different matter from the usual redundancy, though. The two sheets are similar but different, as if the character had been redrawn twice. From what I can see, one version is only used in the first part of 3-4, while the other version is used in the rest of the game. That's pretty strange.

Yeah, the blue background.

And I have noticed some redundant sheets but these are similar but not the same. Stuff like thicker eyebrows and ears are slightly elevated. A wrinkle or two more. The same character but ever so slightly different...

Poking around, I realized there are GameCenter achievements. I skipped the ones which I figured were obviously for beating 1-1, 1-2 etc... But there's a whole lot. Maybe these give hints to unlocking stuff. Maybe like von Karma and Movie Phoenix for the Objection Generator.

HOLY FFFFFFFFFFF MY GOD! Those are some AWESOME graphics! :D

But yea, I did notice it still sticks with the old GBA size formatting. But at least these look much nicer than the original GBA/DS sprites. :)

Nice work to you and/or anyone else who helped you compile all of this. Thanks. :)

After performing an automatic comparison of the pictures in this zip file with the ones I extracted, it seems your zip file is missing 3 pictures from part1024.out.

Spoiler: pictures

By the way, is anyone interested in the scripts? I'm starting to get a better understanding of the format, but while it's quite interesting for me, I'm not sure it's actually useful.

Hmm... do it anyways. I'm not entirely sure, but I 'think' if we can repack the .out files we can have custom cases or dialog or something. If nothing else, it'd be interesting to experiment with.

Also, I just beat 1-5. I can confirm that the endings are not bundled with the last part of the case. Downloading the ending as we speak.

Some other disappointments: The Judge's 'Breakdown' wasn't near as smooth as on the DS. (He just kinda shook his head twice) Gant's Thunderzap only has one frame? Gant's breakdown clap didn't sync at ALL with the clapping sound effects. And, as suspected from the rips, Gant's silhouette scene with Goodman doesn't pan.

Edit: Playing the 1-5 ending now in 'DS' mode. No silly finger printing on the 'bottom screen' =/
Badger Breakdown is 2 frames... total. >=/

Of course this means that, depending on what the original source material was, there might not actually exist the extra ds height on the original artwork. So rather then and editing the original art they just adapted the screen ratio.

Actually, the art book shows every character having far more detail in the originals beyond even the DS screen ratio. Either they painstakingly added all of that just for the art book or they really did take the art and purposefully crop it to the GBA ratio.

My guess is obviously the latter, and it's probably because the iPhone's widescreen ratio perfectly matches the GBA's (3:2). It was probably a lot easier to line it up and choreograph it according to their existing GBA work (i.e. copy+paste) rather than to try and extend all the background artwork (and possibly some sprites) horizontally to suit the DS height (or put ugly black bars there) and then have to do extensive testing to make sure there weren't any mistakes.

Funnily enough, the iPad's screen ratio is a perfect match for the DS's. Clearly they tailored this remake to iPhone, though, since it's probably the far more popular device. (What does this game look like on an iPad, by the way? I don't think I've seen any screenshots.)

Gotten around to beating 1-4, this case is honestly quite decent. Headbanging is just as good, if not better then the DS (Though, sound effects disappear when he speeds up.) Finger snapping and head banging syncs with the sound effect unlike Gant's breakdown clap. (Though it could be my imagination, but I thought Von Karma's snapping was a bit more... snappier, in terms of speed on the DS. Otherwise I'm not noticing any real problems with the animations)

And... downloading the ending.

All that should be left now are 3-5 and 2-4's endings... Unless non finales have endings :larry: I really don't like playing non-English with a guide. Takes all the fun out of the deductions and drama.

Edit: Working on 2-4.

That'll work. Or photobucket.

Edit: Just beat 3-5. It took so long because A: I thought I was in an earlier part of the case then I actually was, and the last part opens, not with a cross examination, but submit evidence/profile. So for a good while I had no idea where I was or what I needed to submit. Hello process of elimination.

Anyways, nothing special to note about 3-5 as I've played it. It's identical to the DS release... complete with lack of Super Objection. (Which doesn't make sense in this port, considering there IS a Super Objection in the files. I wouldn't therefore hold my breath for a Super Objection in English)

Got some errands to do so it'll be a while before I deliver the missing files.

=P there was a large joke back when JFA was new at the old board that the contents of Enguard's glass was gravy, and that Maya was locked in his gravy cellar. Later maybe I'll find and post some of the fan art from then if I can find it.

Anyways, not ready to upload yet, but I learned something disturbing. GS3-5's ending is two parts, epilogue and credits. I know I've got all the credits. But do the smaller cases have epilogues? Not something I'm especially eager to find out.

Here's some shots with the Gravy Flask. And, here's the promised origin of the Gravy Joke, too bad most of Mrs. E's fan art is broken. There was a particularly entertaining image of Enguard murderously drowning his potatoes with gravy, the caption reading something like: Want some mashed potatoes with your gravy, Matt?

Hmm. It's nice to see Matt's sprites in HD, but I can't help but think that he looks a bit flat, color-wise, I mean. Like he lacks shading or the colors are too bright for me. I dunno. But DAMN, look at that breakdown! What, are his fingernails made of steel or something?

And at least that brandy of his is finally looking like actual brandy. I was around the old forums back when the gravy joke started, haha. Even in the GBA and DS versions I always thought it looked too... viscous to be alcohol.

Hahaha. I could see Matt living off of clogged arteries alone.

And holy shit those HD pics. He looks less ridiculous, and a lot more disturbing. Especially that breakdown sprite.

I have now extracted the game's script. Sorry for the delay.
Here are all the script files:

A few things:

The .sjs files are text files encoded with Shift-JIS. Microsoft Word can read them; I personally use JPWce, otherwise I'm not too knowledgeable about which software you can use.

There is one file per part. The files are named part****.sjs. The first digit is always 1, the digit second is the game number (0 for PW:AA; 1 for JFA; 2 for T&T), the third is the case number (1 to 5) and the last digit is the part number.

The files were made by reading the original script file and removing all the instructions (except line breaks). They only contain the actual dialogue text; they don't include the name of the character that talks, or how to reach a particular line. (I think I would be able to add the character's name, since I know which instruction sets it, so it's just a matter of finding out which number corresponds to which character; but that would require more work).

I cannot guarantee that the files are correct. The format is complicated and it's possible that a character may be mistakenly interpreted as an instruction or something. I haven't really checked.
(I also think that some lines that appear in the files are not actually used in the game.)

Hmmm.... The "New iPad" (call it iPad 3, you tools!) has a very high resolution. Higher than 1080p apparently. I would be interested in finding out if CAPCOM will be raising the quality of the HD sprites to look good on this device. I won't get it and I'm sure many people won't but I wonder...

I suppose we'll find out sometime this month or the next!
