Okay, I guess it's time to put in my 2 cents :P

Obviously I was not blown away from the demo, I have been following AA:DD since last year, so the demo was not anything new :P

I thought the use of the 3DS's functions were implemented appropriately and well. It gives a nice subtle 3DS effect, but it's not anything that's gonna make you go all wonky eyed like some other games.

Voice acting...the big thing, I thought the voice actors did the best they could, I did not think Phoenix's voice was bad, but I do believe it could be touched up a bit. Athena's voice seems to fit her just fine, and that little gadget around her neck (does it have a name? Widget or something?) has a cute voice, which works :P

As for the game's visuals, it did look a bit blurry here and there (like with the text) , but that is also because I am using a 3DS XL, but other then that, it's awesome. The animated cut scenes looked amazing.

My thoughts overall, is that it's good and I really do look forward to it, if they can somehow just touch up on the voices a bit that would be swell, but I really do think this is gonna be awesome =D

Spoiler:
Honestly, the demo felt very underwhelming. Everything was a bit fast-paced, and the Mood Matrix seems like it'll be too easy to actually matter in-game. At least the first contradiction wasn't "lol this autopsy report says you're wrong". That is the lowest contradiction in the history of AA.

The VAs are pretty nice. Sam Riegel did a nice job during the cutscenes, but his "OBJECTION!" voice clip is still not all that great. I didn't press anything, though. Athena's VA, from what I've heard, is going to fit her character pretty well! Interesting how they don't show that part at the beginning of Case 1... Probably to surprise people with the whole "Athena was the original attorney" thing. Interesting tactic.

Overall, the demo left me wanting a lot more Guess that's their plan, after all.

The demo was intended to be painfully easy. It's aimed at people who have never played or even heard of Ace Attorney. The first case will be a piece of cake, but I don't think they'll be holding our hands the whole way. Don't worry about that.

One thing that I've noticed is that when you present the wrong evidence but it's the correct statement Athena will tell you that there's something odd. Same thing if you get the right evidence but wrong statement.

after playing this demo what do you think about Athena's 'emotion ability' or whatever? out of the 3 abilities (psychelock, perceive and Athena's new one) which one is your favourite?

I think I still find Apollo's perceive system to be the best... it was the most realistic and I like the idea how you can tell someone is lying by their habits and what they are doing as they lie... it would be PERFECT if it was more of an open world thing, meaning you could use perceive anytime so you would actually have to pay attention (as opposed to giving you the perceive option when they want you to use it).

anyone with me on this?

I kind of like the demo. I expected it to be identical to the Japanese one, and I enjoyed the chibi lawyers rotating in the start window. (I know, identical to the Japanese, but I still like it.) Knowing pretty much how the puzzle went, I decided to test out the other parts of the game. Pretty sure nothing I'm saying is spoilery so I won't mark it, but I'd hope if you're in this thread, you know there's going to be a little.

First, I just let some of the sprites run to see their pattern, just like in the original/DS games. Nothing too noteworthy about the sprites. The pattern is about as long as the previous 4 games, but look just a little better because of the 3D modeling.

Next, I decided to scan the audience to look for repeats. I actually found some pretty quickly. The easiest repeat is the girl in the purple top; there's 2 behind Athena and 2 seen behind the witness stand. Sadly, I didn't pay attention during the zoom-in on the witness before each testimony, but I'm pretty sure there's more there. It's also not a conclusive list, so that those who want to hunt themselves can do so. I'm curious if the audiences will change between cases, or even between days in a case. (Those with the full version, please don't tell me. It's part of the surprise.)

I pressed everything. Pressing the first statement gets Ted to speak as he dismantles the bomb, as a small matter of interest. I liked how his arm-panel flashed red briefly when he gets caught in a contradiction. There seems to be even subtle details to the "gotcha" pose, whereas the 2D models tended to have just one big freakout and no details if you looked elsewhere. (Not to belittle the art. If something was off, it would stand out pretty dramatically.)

The mood matrix was pretty interesting, but I was slightly disappointed that my meter didn't get hit when I pointed out the wrong emotion, even one that wasn't flashing on the screen. I forgot to goof in the traditional testimony part, but the classic explosion of the meter going down from showing my badge after Juniper's testimony looked pretty good.

All in all, I liked what I saw, and I'm excited to play the game when it gets released. (No one's mentioned the US price in this thread.. I guess it's all over other pages? I'm also mildly curious to confirm it's the same as mine here in Canada.)

@poptdp: Phoenix's ability is cool, and I liked how it filled up the health. Apollo's ability was fun, up until the last case. I had such a hard time detecting the last two, and admit to cheating on the penultimate perceive. Timing is my only issue there. As for Athena's matrix... I'll wait until the full game. What we see in the game offers almost nothing, and analyzing the emotions requires nothing more than the most basic understanding of the statements made.

the thing I loved about Apollo's Perceive system is that it was realistic... if you do your research, people actually do things like touch the back of their neck or touch another area of their body subconsciously when they are lying (e.g. touch their head when talking about a topic relating to their past suffered head trauma).

makes you feel like a badass when u spot it

You're right, Apollo's Perceive is realistic and interesting. Though I really like Phoenix's and Athena's abilities too. The Psychelocks are great because you have to think what to present and when you find someone with a lot of psychelocks you now something is wrong there. And I love the Mood Matrix, specially in the last case, it was awesome, and difficult. But I like how you can see what people feels when they remember things and you have to see what's wrong there.

@Yellow Magician: You don't really have to wait for it to charge... Brand-new, it'll have enough battery on it for you to go to the eShop and start the download (or at least mine did... I was able to update and play a couple of demos before having to charge it for the first time).

I had to do quite a few updates here and there and did a general bit of messing around beforehand, which brought the battery level down to one bar. It's all good now, though! Quite glad my 3DS XL package came with a charger included :D

Just played through the demo - was mostly pleased. Everything still feels very Ace Attorney, from the self-deprecating lead lawyer to the constant stream of references (e.g. "like a boss"). The Mood Matrix system's alright and I can see a bit of potential, but not as much as the Perceive system to be honest.

What I especially didn't like was how the UI felt a bit sluggish compared to the earlier AA games - but I'm new to the whole 3DS scene, so maybe there are hardware limitations at play I don't know about. Also, Sam Riegel's voice acting in the opening cutscene was, quite frankly, atrocious...

End of the day, though, it's new AA, so I'm still very much excited!

I don't think Athena's is that unrealistic, least until they said "She has super hearing" I'd assumed she was just really empathic and it was her estimates as to what the person was feeling.

@Yellow Magician: ... Ah. That makes sense. I didn't think it was all that sluggish; it may be because I was avoiding the touch screen, but it worked at about the same rate as the old games did for me. And is it sad that I run into the "like a boss" reference so much that I almost didn't recognize it as a reference? xD

@Pierre: ... Really? The "super-hearing" thing actually seemed more realistic to me than the notion that she was an empath. Partly because it's easier to program a computer to note changes in a person's tone of voice than to program it to record one person's perception of changes in others' emotions...
So I finally grew a brain and remembered to give myself a signature... Whoopee.

Not a supernatural empath just empathic, naturally good at sensing other people's emotions. Having what essentially seems a superpower in hearing is a bit eh to me. Especially when she brings up the little computer interface then I don't know if it's really her or the computer that is doing the magic.

Played the demo yesterday.

I reaaaaaaaaally liked what I played there.

The animations of the characters look pretty sweet and the whole emotion-thingy was pretty cool as well.
But I got kinda confused: First, Athena has a special ability, now she studied it, like, what? xD

I also had to chucke a bit as the Judge said, that there ain't that much time in a demo after all.

Even more hyped for the 24th than before.

If you recall, there was no penalty for getting a perceive wrong in AA4. So I guess the Mood Matrix not having a penalty follows in the same way. Maybe it's because you're just talking to the witness? I dunno.

Well, of course the demo isn't going to explain Athena's power. The judge said there was no time!

I'd hope her power would be elaborated on in the main game, like Apollo's perceive ability was.

It's kinda the matter related to the main game, so I wouldn't get much into it. However effects wouldn't be exactly the same.

I'm sure the glove is only used to interact with Widget's screen. It's because of her hearing that she can input info into the Mood Matrix for easier analysis. Otherwise, she can only hear the "noise" in a person's heart, but can't necessarily pinpoint exactly what's causing that noise.

I just downloaded the demo and played it! I loved it!! It had a new feeling mixed in with classic Ace Attorney! I look forward to the full release!

Spoiler: Ending Trailer
I've skimmed through most comments but I haven't seen a single person bring this up, at least from what I can tell...
Also I haven't been keeping up with AA news as much as I'd like to so maybe people already knew...
BUT DID NO ONE SEE THAT PEARLY WAS IN THE TRAILER?!?! :pearl: Unless everyone already knew, I'm surprised it wasn't brought up.
I really hope that means Maya will be making a comeback. Or at least a cameo! I really miss her.
I'm excited that Edgeworth is making a return! I hope his VA is the same as his previous games!
I have mixed feelings with Phoenix's new VA. It matches but I guess I was hoping they'd stick with his original VA. None-the-less, Sam does a great job!

You'd need to buy a 3DS from another region for that (as the eShops are locked). If prices are consistently significantly higher down there, you might consider it, but if it's just for one game...

Well, try it. Australia is the same "region" as Europe. Although if you pay with cards you need the correct currency.
E.g. I'm from Germany and could easily switch to the Irish eShop.

This is probably completely unnecessary and more than a little late, but I just realized the demo is technically on the front page of the eShop twice: once with the Nintendo Direct stuff, and again pretty far down the line between NightSky and the Zelda stuff. Just thought I oughta mention it...

I noticed something about the demo when I replayed it today.

You know how Athena promises that they will be done in ten minutes and they later note that they didn't quite make the goal? The game actually checks if you did make the goal or not and slightly adjusts the script.

Spoiler:
Ah, the good old incompetent "Oops-I-forgot-to-cross-examine-the-threads-from-this-torn-off-tail-to-the-stuffed-animal" Ace Attorney law enforcement is back! How I've missed you and your ability to over complicate cases by creating endless headaches, egregious forensic oversights, and needless contradictions.

Spoiler:
