A 34-year-old Larry...

I can't really tell if he's gotten his shit together or not.

I wonder if it's a coincidence that his sunglasses match Ema's? The round ones Ema used in her first appearance.

Then again, there is the Pre-order mini cases, with him, Klavier and Jinxie in Khura'in, with double witness testimony ala VsLayton/DGS, but I don't even think we are getting that outside Japan.

Wait why wouldn't it? From what I know, the DLC case being discussed right now was one of the two free DLC cases you could get. Why would they release this one and not the other?

Well, uh, I guess I got impatient. I think this is relevant, so I'll just leave this here.

Spoiler: quick translated script of the skit for ya'll
May 17, 2016
Some time
Some city court

J: Court is now in session.

P: The defense is ready, Your Honor.

E: The prosecution is ready as well, Your Honor.

J: I was informed that for some reason, today's session...
will be announcing some important information pertaining to the special episode in the downloadable contents.

P: We were called here all of a sudden, through these anonymously sent letters.

E: Incidentally, the letter that was delivered to me reads thusly.
"In this special episode,
that character who's appeared in Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations is finally getting married."

J: What!?
But, just who would that be...?

P: Speaking of which...
the letter I addressed to me said something else.
"The initial of the person getting married is... 'M'."

J: Em? You mean...

E: ...I-I haven't a clue, Your Honor.

P: Well, that's only expected.
We haven't heard any rumors about it around you.

E: Wright. You are the last person who should say that.

M: Now that you mention it... the letter I got said this.
"The special episode's themes are on a wedding and time travel."

P: W-what's with that incredibly disjointed pairing?

???: ...Because love transcends time itself.

P: What?

E: Who is that?
Nghoooooh!

J: Eek!

P: What's going on!?

???: ...I've been waiting for this moment.

E: T-t-this voice is...!?

J: Aaah!

P: Ehh!?

???: At long last, our lost story has finally been written, hasn't it...
...Edgey-poo?

E: *half-barf*

M: Nick, look! Her sprite is...
the same as before.

O: Edgey-poo!
I heard that the two of us were getting married...
so I just happened to come over from the world of the past!

E: T-t-th... THIS CAN'T BEEEE!!

P: W-what the heck is going on here!?

O: Actually, I did show up at Capcom HQ to register to be in Dual Destinies, but they ended up rejecting me.
*blah blah blah*

J: Well, um, whatever the case may be, could you please first give us your testimony?

Begin Testimony
~ Marrying Edgey-poo ~

O: If the person's initial is M, then who else could it be other than Edgey-poo?
So that's why I thought he was going to get married to little ol' me!
...Of course, he was quite dashing around as his younger self, so either way works for me!
I thought so long and hard about it that I just traveled through time to reach him!

Objection!

P: Ms. Oldbag, your testimony has a glaring contradiction!
First of all, you're not really "young" anymore and...
I don't think it'd work out.
Furthermore, you time traveled here...?
Just how many Special Court skits are you going to turn on their heads!?

O: It's the power of love!
Love can transcend the very fabric of time!
*rata-tat-tat-tat-tat...*

Objection!

E: I can't, I won't accept this!
First of all, if the initial is M, then it could also be Maya...

Objection!

P: Sorry, Edgeworth, but that isn't possible.
Your own letter said so already.
"That character who's appeared in Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations is finally getting married."
Maya hasn't appeared (officially) in Ace Attorney Investigations.

E: Urk! H-however...

O: Aw, Edgey-poo, you're such a fresh sprout. No need to get embarrassed.
...Not that I'm complaining, of course.

E: *nearly has an aneurysm*

O: Oh, Edgey-poo~ Where are we going for the honeymoon?

E: *has an aneurysm*

Hold it!

???: Heh heh heh... Sorry I've kept you all waiting.

O: Who is that!? No one gets in the way of my love affairs!

L: Hey, everyone! It's been a while, huh!

P: L-LARRY!?

M: N-Nick, look! His sprite...
It's been updated to 3D!

J: Could it be... the person who is getting married in the special episode is...?

L: Yep! That's me!

P: *takes damage*

J: Then, the one who sent the letters to us was you?

L: That's right! Yours truly!
The M is the M is Masashi Yahari! (Larry Butz)

O: B-but I even time traveled here...!
There's no way I can believe that!

P: (She time traveled here on a hasty conclusion...!?)

L: Besides, I have decisive evidence that proves it was me...
It's recorded footage of the wedding!
Take a look at this!

???: This sure is a pity.
Now fall, together with that time machine of memories of yours!

Bride: Turn back the clock! Back to that happy time!

Maid: The reception is beginning, ma'am.

Bride: The time... turned back?

Objection!

P: Larry. When you saw this yourself, did you not notice it?
The bridegroom was pictured in this footage, but...
No matter how you look at him, this isn't you, is it?

L: H-Huh?

E: On that thought, Larry...
We can clearly see you being caught in the act of raiding the wedding.

L: ...

P: In other words, this evidence clearly contradicts your own claim!
Like with Ms. Oldbag, you also jumped to the wrong conclusion!

L: N-no waaaaaaaay!

P: Thanks to the initial "M"...
Larry also came under the impression that it was him who was written here.

O: In that case, it means I still have a chance with my dear Edgey!

Objection!

E: Oh, I'm so sorry, but that possibility no longer exists.

O: W-what do you mean?

E: Your design.
Larry, who will be appearing in the special episode, has had his design updated...
But yours is the same as it used to be!

O: Oh.

E: Therefore, this is evidence that you won't be appearing in the special episode!
Abominable nightmare of the past...
Return to whence you came from!

O: N... nooooooooo!

......

O: Edgey-poo~ since it's just the Special Court, it can't be helped, but I won't ever give up!
Someday in the world of the future, we will meet agaaaain!

E: *shudder*

M: After he leaves this trial, he'll be on the lookout for the present-day Oldbag, huh?

P: Truly, this must be the power of "love that transcends time".

J: Well then, who is it really that is getting married? And what does time travel have to do with it?
Though it remains a mystery, in any case the truth is waiting for us...
"Please look forward to playing the full release!" as they say.

P: Oh, boy... That's how it looks in the end.

J: Very well, everyone! Let us meet again in the full release of Spirit of Justice!

I've seen some pretty weird stuff from the Ace Attorney series, but this takes the cake.

Spoiler:
Wendy Oldbag coming from out of a portal (?!) with her 2D sprite in the middle of a trial... whew, I don't think I can handle this.

Now that I've seen the livestream footage for myself, I feel so satisfied and reassured. This is entirely a fanservice case that doesn't take itself seriously, and I'm certain it's non-canon.

I'll just leave a summary here...
Spoiler:
To celebrate Maya's sudden return to Japanifornia, she and Nick are going out for "burgers" as usual. She invites Edgeworth, who at first insists on focusing on the trial, but to the judge's suggestion to "lighten up", he replies in a very "sure, if you insist" manner.

Anyway, Larry's not the one on trial, but naturally, he's been put into a suspicious light yet again. This time, it's Nick who calls him in to testify, and Edgeworth, being ever the buddy, tells him "Wright's the one who's made you into a suspect." Naturally, Larry then testifies and threatens to renounce all friendship ties with Nick. The judge, being tired of this crap, tells Mr. Wright to cross-examine Larry's threats, and Nick has no choice but to go through with it.

According to Larry, it seems the debut of "Franzy's Whiplash Splash" has gotten him attention and he's living the dream as a successful artist under the penname "Laurice Deauxnim". Where or how he got the money even though the book isn't readily available in stores is a real mystery.

It seems Athena's been taking care of Charley, and Phoenix realizes that he should take up the responsibility. He also mentions that it's been a while since he's touched that piano, but puts off practice yet again.

Sounds more like the skit content is what's non-canon while the actual case itself is completely fair game and likely to be canon, especially when one considers that they actually specified the chronology in regards to this case.

True, but as a DLC episode, it sure doesn't take itself seriously. The trial starts off with the judge reminiscing and he even suggests to Edgeworth that he should lighten up.

I'm sure the mystery of why this case feels like something out of a Layton game (or why the assaulter in the cutscene looks like Snake from 999) will be answered, but in the meantime, they'll first have to explain why Edgeworth is prosecuting.

Actually we can, right? The eShop lets you pre-downlod games and, applying a small patch on the release, play it early.
Maybe that's how it will work for us.

Some thoughts on this:

Always awesome they're doing DLC, especially since this doesn't sound like it was made for the game and then cut out later on.

One of the biggest things for me is that the case will take place after SOJ, which is great for a couple of reasons: A, it means it's a filler case that likely won't have any massive story ramifications (such as 1-3, 1-5, 5-2, etc.) and it's always nice to get those since I feel like many of the games put too much focus on trying to connect every case to the overall plot somehow. It also means that unlike DD I can play the game when it actually comes out rather than have to wait a month for the DLC to come out over here (I know I could have played DD before that but if it was possibly going to be the last AA game we got localized I wanted to experience the finale last).

I'm really confused (and I suspect that others are as well) about what parts of what we were shown were part of the court skit and what part is actually in the case.

From what I can tell, the only things confirmed in the actual case are:
Larry's Back
Maya and Nick vs Edgeworth
"Time Travel" will play a role - likely the same way that "flying" played a role in 2-3 and "yokai" played a role in 5-2
The game takes place after the main game (establishing that this is "canon" or considered to have "really happened" in the context of future games (to a certain extant the "canonicity" of non-plot cases doesn't really matter until they are referenced again). It seems like they said this specifically while they didn't for the likely-non-canon pre-order episodes, so it seems like a true case to me at least
A wedding somehow ties into this.

Am I correct in being under the impression that Oldbag (HD sprite from trilogy), forth wall breaking and all the "non-realistic"/"non-canon" stuff is made for the court skit?

With those things in mind, this case doesn't sound in any way far-fetched or out of place with the rest of the cases, and I really hope it comes out here!

(Also, I don't know if the free price is indicative of the length/quality/canonicity of the case. Turnabout Reclaimed was never free (the costumes were for like a month after launch) but I remember DD sold really well in Japan so maybe they are comfortable making it free as a way to encourage more sales of the game a month into release, and they aren't worried about making as much money off of it. I have no doubt that it will be paid in the west though. And people will hate me for this, but I'm actually fine with that. I'd happily pay $5-10 for the three DLC episodes - assuming that this case is indeed a full one like Turnabout Reclaimed is.)
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Really curious to see what the whole mystery is about with the "I saw a vision of the future"

If there's one thing AA always does, it's exposing absolutely insane and crazy premises for what they really are, Monstrous Turnabout especially did this as you find it every single detail Le Belle did.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the truth about the DLC case is that
Spoiler:
the events that the women experienced, already happened, and the whole wedding guests was in on the whole trick to fool her to think the day restarted, Larry's involvement being the only indication of figuring this out

I can't see how we can get the mini cases since we are only getting digital, we can't preorder a physical

Actually we can, right? The eShop lets you pre-downlod games and, applying a small patch on the release, play it early.
Maybe that's how it will work for us.

To be clear: yes, Turnabout Across Time is a full-length case. In addition, digital preorders of the Japanese version of AA6 still get the mini-episodes, so assuming they want to tie them to preorders in the West as well I imagine it'll be the same situation.

Also, who wants some speculation?

Here's the groom (presumably) we saw in the anime preview of the DLC case:

Image

And he looks fairly familiar:

Image

...Albeit with a cheerier disposition, but hey, after seeing AA6 Ema, I think we can allow for that. And Hugh did appear in the TGS AA6 skit, so presumably they at least did some work to update his 3D model.

Anyway, more interesting is the defendant's name:

Image

大津部 雫 - something like "Masatsube Rei" (Japanese order, e.g. family name first.) Hugh's Japanese name was 静矢 零 (Shizuya Rei, again Japanese order).

So here was my initial thought: Hugh is getting married to some very high-class woman, takes her family name, and during the ceremonies something goes down and he's arrested. And if this bride is someone really well-known, maybe a case at her wedding means there's enough political/social pressure to pull in the chief prosecutor to handle it.

There is one problem with that theory, though. Did you spot it? (I know I missed it at first glance.) The trouble is the kanji in the first name: 雫 vs. 零. Both look similar at a glance, and both can be read as "Rei", but they're distinct characters. On top of that, 雫 is a female name kanji; 零 is a male one.

So maybe I've got it backwards, and the person on trial isn't Hugh at all, and perhaps that 雫 is actually read "Shizuku". I wouldn't put it past the AA naming team to have Rei marry someone whose name could be read as "Rei". Or perhaps the person in the above anime shot is just a doppelganger and this has been a big wall of nothing. Who knows!

...How does this tie into Larry and time travel, you ask? No idea! :yogi: (But hey, maybe Larry wanted to pull a Graduate with the bride...)

The name is more likely read ŌTSUBE Shizuku. 雫 is not read as "rei", it is commonly read as "shizuku" (and veeeerily rarely as "shidoke"). It technically has an on-reading of "na"/"da", but it's basically never used in Japanese. 零 (rei) is read as "rei" because of the kanji's lower component, which is obviously different in both characters.

So yeah, it's Shizuku.

Really? Do you have a link to the skit? I want to see how his updated model looks.

Nah I can't see it being Hugh getting married, maybe a relative though, but i do expect Hugh to dress nicely.

I'm more curious for the time travel bit, that's a load of horse sh*t, there has to be some sort of trick going on here, since there always it, and I'm looking forward to unraveling this mystery

@Ash: ah, yes, I forgot the most important piece of the post, which is that I'm still terrible with Japanese names and mostly rely on dictionaries. (Though in my defense, Ootsube was my first guess...)

Thanks for the corrections!

Now that I look at it more, I think that the groom is just someone who looks eerily similar to Hugh. There's that whole deal with their names, and the eye colors don't seem to match (unless that's due to lighting or something).

And it's rather intriguing that the wedding seems to take place in an airship (I guess it is an airship because it looks like that miniature airship, which seems to turn back time). I wonder what the purpose of holding a wedding there is.

Airships are cool. Weddings are supposed to be memorable. What better way of having a memorable wedding than at a cool place? And no, a surprise murder is only a valid answer in some very special cases, this is not one of them.

The Investigations part only applied to Larry, who jumped the gun and believed the wedding was linked to him. Outside the skit, the "Ace Attorney and Investigations" thing is not relevant. Most likely, based off the video, the bride and groom are brand new characters.

I don't believe they would make a skit teasing a marriage between someone starting with M and being in Investigations and other games only to reveal brand new characters. Likely there is a case about a married couple which is a parallel to, say, Gumshoe and Maggey getting married. We have the old crew taking center stage and with that in mind having Ema as the detective seems less fitting.

Gumshoe is so going to be in this case.

The letter was written by Larry and referred to him, there is nothing else to it.

I get what linkenski's saying. It may have been Larry who wrote the letters, but knowing Capcom, they may have purposely left a hint hidden in the gag. There's still a possibility that someone else other than these new characters are getting married, but whoever they are, it sure ain't gonna be Larry.

Whoa wait, a DLC already? Man this is scaring me. I was really hoping the new game would have a lot of cases but so far we only got 3 main cases and now 1 DLC. At this point I just hope one case will took like 5 evidence pages like RFtA.

I don't think the game will only have 3 cases, but they only showed 3 to not spoil a lot.
And the DLC is cool because if you don't buy it you don't miss a lot on the main story, it's just an optional extra.

Assuming the "M" was supposed to be a hint, that leaves Penny Nichols, Maggey Byrde, Regina Berry, and Franziska Von Karma (Going off their Japanese names at least).

Honestly, all I want to see from datamining is (hopefully) Larry's theme. Because I'm only going to listen to the music (Pursuit included) for the game until September, and not look at anything else.
