Never mind the recently announced expansion to the Street Fighter roster. What if, I asked some Capcom developers last week, the company put its video game lawyers into a fighting game? Who would enter, and what would their moves be?

I was speaking two the two top men behind Ace Attorney Investigations in their last interview at the Tokyo Game Show. We talked about their game, which stars fan favorite attorney Miles Edgeworth (pictured, dashingly, above), and I'll have more on that later this week.

But today's all about fighting games, so I wanted to share this part of the conversation. The translator working with me gave them my question:

If Frank West from Dead Rising can be in a Capcom fighting game, then why not the lawyers of the Phoenix Wright series? Who should go in and what would their moves be?

They cracked up.

"They're not sure any of the characters suit the fighting game world, so they've never actually thought about it," a Capcom translator told me as Ace Attorney Investigations' producer and director, Motohide Eshiro and Takeshi Yamazaki, laughed and started pantomiming attacks.

Eshiro was the first to get specific: "Wel,l I guess if we were going to do one, we could put in Agent [Shi-Long] Lang, because Agent Lang, in the story, he has a specific martial art he knows. Sometimes you see him do poses from it. If we were to expand that, his martial arts could fit into a game somehow."

"Well, if you want to talk about weapons, Franziska von Karma has weapons: Her whip," Yamazaki said. "So it would probably be pretty easy to fit her and her whipping into a game."

He added, joking, "We could put in Phoenix or Edgeworth and they could yell 'Objection!' and a little bubble would come out of their mouth and it would be like —' Objection!' — like a projectile.

"Or they could throw evidence at the opposition and yell 'Take That!' as they throw their evidence." He was pretending to throw evidence at me while he said this.

I suggested that the series' judge could be a good fighting character. He'd use his gavel to hammer his opponents.

"It's awesome," Yamazaki laughed. He started shaking his hand up and down vigorously, as if demanding some order in the court. "It would be a really strong attack."

But that was all speculative brainstorming. As of this writing Capcom has put none of their legal heroes into the deep rosters of their many fighting games.

Yeah, even though it would be illogical, it would still be neat for GS characters to be in a fighting game.

Other than throwing evidence they could swing certain melee weapons (knives, sword, the thinker, etc.)

That could be an interesting throw.

What about having a character pop from offscreen to do an assisting attack?

The Objection! and Franny ideas are basically what the producers of TvC had in mind. They can easily do it. C. Falcon was never a fighter and he has the epic Falcon Punch. Add Steel Samurais and Snackoo-throwing Ema and this will be a fun fighter.

Edgeworth. he can strangle people with his cravat.
Trucy can cast magic missle.
Hobo Phoenix can through poker cards (a la gambit)
Franziska can use her whip to attack her oponent's weak points for massive damage.
Maya can attack by beating people over the head with blunt objects (the bottle from 2-3, the Schisitscho from 3-2)
Apollo can impale people with his hair.
Godot can throw coffee, and shoot laser beams with his mask.
jean armstrong can attack... by forcing his foes to eat his cooking (and stripping).
Steel Samurai. Nuff said.
Glen Elg can summon MC Bomber. (as an eidolon/esper/summon ect)

Actually (I don't know if this is post or pre smash bros.), C. Falcon is actually a martial artist in addition to being a racer. Kinda like Klavier is in a rock band in addition to being a prosecutor (they're both just that awesome).

Trucy casts Ultima!

If they wanted to be REALLY daring, they could include EVERY SINGLE character in the series. Totally unrealistic, I know, but the sheer number of potential ridiculous match-ups--Director Hotti/Hickfield vs. Oldbag, Ben and Trilo vs. Mike Meekins--could be hilarious...maybe. :gant:

what would meekins fight with?
Oldbag would have her ray gun...

The title (my little brother thought of it)
Super Smash Lawyers.

And what on earth would Hotti use as a weapon?!

Klavier can whack people with a guitar...or he could use incredibly loud rock music or whatever it is you kids call it these days. :yogi:

Trucy can summon Mr. Hat, then it turns into an Ice Climbers kinda fighting....

Mia can jump up and land on people.... :hotti:

Von Karma can use a taser...

And then there's the Hypnogant.....

Super Smash Lawyers...I like it. :will:

Meekins could freak people out to the point of uselessness with his appearance in general, and/or paralyze them by shouting into his megaphone; after that, even a weak punch from him could finish anyone off. Hotti might have some...interesting moves up his sleeve. :hotti: Remember his kinda creepy animations where he'd make a little screwing motion with one hand and then some sort of convulsive slitting motion with his other arm? I'm sure Capcom could get very creative with him. In fact, they'd have to, along with a lot of other characters.

Bottom line, yeah, Capcom would have to get really silly to give most characters a fighting chance, but that's what would make it great!

What does Mia have to do with jumping?
Eldoon can manipulate salty noodles at will... hmm.
(Whacks foes with his noodle) (Not that kind of noodle!)
Phoenix can be a ninja, with shuriken shaped like his outbursts (Throws an objection shaped discus at target) (and I hit edgeworth. oops.)
Gumshoe can do tag team attacks with missile...

It's not about the jumping, it's about the landing. :hotti:

I also thought of some more...

MOE USES CORNY JOKE.

ONE HIT KO.... :moe-laugh:

Ema could blow fingerprint powder into people's eyes, or just throw snackoos at them...

Edgeworth attacks by staring at people...

The Blue Badger does the Dance of Doom!!!!

Pearl could slap people.

Furio Tigre does the roaring thing.

And Grossberg could sit on someone...... :karma:

Dang, this is fun! :will:

Really makes you feel like it could happen, doesn't it? There's no need to worry about anything being "realistic," so the sky's the limit when it comes to ideas.

I picture Edgeworth being a fenser (sp?). You know, with the long thin swords?

I would love Super Smash Lawyers. Or even better:

Atmey would be epic in a fighting game. He would have to go to the corners to do his strongest attacks.

very much agreed :gant:

Adrian drops/throws urns at people.
Payne screams/objects.
I could see Mike either throwing a small knife around or hitting/yelling into his megaphone. He could even choke people with his handcuffs.
Hotti would use his arm...for something.
Violetta would offer around extra creamy coffee and extra thick tea.
Redd would blind people with his jewelery...or hit them over the head with statues.

It would be really fun to have a fighting lawer game, but very unlikely at the same time.

In my opinion, If there really was, the minor characters can serve as "strikers", à lá King Of Fighters.
Example:
Sahwit - bashes with The Thinker
Bellboy - serves tea to recover a little of health, and so on.
This is a sig. Don't you believe me?

This video tape clearly shows mike's fighting style! The only time we learn of him using a weapon in the AA series is shown on this video! Aichmophobia or not, this is solid proof.
