I got NGamer (UK Nintendo Magazine) two days ago and there is an interview with Ryota Niitsuma, the producer working on the Wii game "Tatsunoko VS Capcom Ultimate All-Stars".

Now it is really cool that Capcom are releasing this to the west. However, the west release will have on-line and extra characters! See article. Now this at the time seemed good news because they could perhaps add Phoenix Wright as a playable character! :phoenix:

However, this interview in NGamer comes with disappointing news that Phoenix Wright will not appear in the game.

R & D actually really wanted to include these characters, especially Phoenix Wright and Franziska von Karma because she's got a whip which would be easy to implement. But because Phoenix Wright only has one move, 'Objection', we struggled. We designed a move for him: when he says objection, the actual writing attacks the opponent. However, 'objection' in Japanese is 'igiari' - it's four characters, where as 'objection' becomes ten. When we localise, the balance of the game gets destroyed because the move becomes bigger. There'd be no way of avoiding it! We had to remove him for these reasons. In the future, it is one of aims to get him in.


So we wouldn't be seeing Phoenix Wright in 3D then. Basically the designers need to bring in Nintendo and get them to show how to turn a bland character into a mean fighting machine *points at Peach & Ness*.

It doesn't really make sense to have Phoenix in a fighting game. At all.

When I first heard about this game, I instantly thought Godot as a Cyclops clone would be pretty awesome. Hells yeah.

Having only played 2 games of TvC, I'm not sure what to make of it. Seeing how I've just bought any fighting game that has mildly interested me in the past year, I'll probably purchase it. I'm looking forward to seeing just who the new characters are going to be.

It's a shame they didn't put him in, it would've been interesting to see how Phoenix would fare in combat.

They could've fixed the problem by chopping "Objection" into four... like Ob jec ti on. Just saying.

I'm not surprised or dissapointed.

You can't really compare Phoenix to Peach or Olimar, simply because Phoenix is just a normal human with little to no fighting skill (proven again and again in the games)
In terms of moves you've got objection, desk slamming... and that's about it. You could have a lot of "assist" moves, ie. Steel samurai comes in and slices the enemy, but these rarely make for good characters.

A little more acknowledgement of the series would be nice, like something like an AA costume for one of the characters, but I can cope.

DAMN.

I wish. If people like Roll, Servbot, Hakushon Daimao can get into crossover games... Why can't Phoenix get any action? Because of a tiny hitbox change... Lame.

I really hope that he IS to be in the game, but Capcom is choosing not to unveil that yet. But that's wishful thinking.

But I guess I can sort of understand the problem too. It might be coding-wise. If they used actual characters and not images for the "Igiari" then it really is going to make the localized version unbalanced. Still, I want to see Feenie in the game, even though the thought is a bit silly. xD I hope they can find a way to make it work.

Sorry guys but no offense, that would suck. Adventure Games (for the most part) are tailor made for their genre. That'd be like Sam and Max having a Party Game.

I don't see what being in an adventure game has to do with anything. Why wouldn't Sam and Max work in a party game? I'd actually like to see that happen, myself.

Phoenix Wright isn't an actual superhero-type dealio. Fine. That doesn't necessarily mean he won't work in a fighting game. Lots of anime (not superhero anime) characters get into action games and they do fine.

A possible solution to that would be to divide up the english "Objection" by syllables plus the exclamation point, so it'd be Ob-jec-tion-!, matching the four characters in "Igiari."


Being a "normal" human shouldn't be a problem. (Peach, for example, seems to be Pretty Normal before SSB and That DS Game That Features Her and Which Title I forgot made her into a fighter. With moodswings.) GS is comedic game on many parts, and there's plenty of fighting games that feature characters with gag moves. There's a pretty wide moveset you could make with Phoenix with a little imagination, and hey... the dude eats trace poison, falls off bridges, and comes out of a hit-and-run with a sprained ankle. I think he'd be a tough contender. 8Db

On both Kotaku and Court Records I have to say I'm rather surprised that so very many people actually seem to take that statement seriously.


I highly...HIGHLY doubt that if they really wanted Phoenix in the game that modern day game designers would ever be stuck for more than two seconds on:
1. He only has one attack
2. The word he attacks with is longer in English....this makes the game COMPLETELY UNBALANCED and there's NO POSSIBLE WAY TO FIX THIS....THE GAME IS RUINED NOW!


Yeah...for the sake of everyone who worked on that game I'd have to say it was a joke. If not then that guy just admitted the designers, programmers, and artists of that game are hopelessly inept in every possible way. The fact that it's been taken so seriously on many sites makes me feel rather bad for the development team.

Furio Tigre would have been an awesome fighter! And maybe Apollo to a lesser extent. E.g. A headbutt would prove to be a fatality. But Franziska should be in the next Smash Bros!

If he isn't joking then he's either trying to play us for fools (oh uh...yeah! we can't put Phoenix in the game because umm...we designed one move for him and it didn't work out!) or the designers are TRULY that pathetically awful at their job. Tatsunoko vs Capcom is an awesome game and I have a hard time believing the latter reason. He doesn't even give us a reason for Franziska >_>

Face it. They wanted five new characters and Phoenix just didn't make the cut.
