You can vote for whoever you want, as long as it's only once...!

There are more fanart and sprite entries that did not make the finals, but we really only did get 3 fanfic entries this year. It was a slightly smaller turnout overall, compared to last year's whopping 80 overall.

Pardon me if I'm being obtuse, but the link in your post doesn't seem to take me to the voting page (unless that is the voting page and I'm just blind). Is there another way to get there?

Make me wonder thought, can we view the non-finalist this year as in the past years it is available for viewing?

As with previous years, all the non-finalist entries should be available for viewing after the winners have been chosen and the contest is over. :)

Ah- I'm glad I didn't enter this year :) It's alot easier on my nerves to just vote ^^ My vote was a pretty clear cut one too which was nice. There was alot of very good entries this year though :) I'm glad to see more backstory going into the entries! Although, I DO prefer not reading a miniature story about the character's bio. Can we put a cap on that next year? People need to learn how to boil their character backgrounds down some. I'm not talking 100 words. Something reasonable. Not a miniature story though! Perhaps excessive posts can have a spoiler tag willed with the juicy details and the rest is something shorter?

I spent the time and looked through the fanart and sprites and picked who I thought had the most interesting character. The votes don't reflect on my opinion of course :yuusaku:

I have a question for you, Croik~

I know 1st and 2nd place are based on the votes from C-R members and the judges but what about "Croik's Choice"? Is that also affected by the votes or is it just your preferred entry out of the finalists in the category?

That's a really good idea. I mean, I was trying to get the effect of my character across but I managed in a shortish segment. A lot of the (Very Cool) characters had three page back-stories which really is a bit much. I like the spoiler tag Idea. That also allows for "Known" and "Discovered" backstories which are often how things unfold in the games themselves.

Some kind of limit might be good. I would like to see a limit on the number of words for the fan fic entries. It's not so bad this year since their are very few, but imagine if there were ten finalists all with 20-40 page entries? It would be rather daunting to read all of that.

I personally would like to see just a taste of those stories, the author could submit an excerpt for judging and link the rest of the story for anyone that was intrigued enough to read the whole thing. That way you get the best bit of the character to judge it with, and you still have hours in your day left to do other things.

Happy voting everyone.

I definitely agree on the "cap on the length of character bio" and "spoiler tag" ideas! Would make things a lot easier and comfortable for both the judges and the readers.

Besides that, good luck everyone, this contest is a blast everytime it's up and I'm glad all of you participated!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Even if they don't get high votes, it doesn't mean anything to the character's quality. It's like page views- high page views doesn't mean you're popular. They got top ten- that tells you they pretty darn good, right? :)

I voted! Though it's kinda not fair that you can see who gets the most votes on the poll. But I'm guessing that's not the only thing that judges the winner, is it?

The entries were really good! I'm very impressed by all the good artists here; It makes me want to work harder at my own art and maybe next year I'll enter. Time will only tell ;)

...I was kind of stressed last night viewing the entries and ended up typing up a - or so it seems in retrospect - very entertaining sort of rant. Not sure if I should (or even need to) post this here, but it seems kind of a waste to just leave it as a word document.

I'm, uh, really impressed with everyone else, though. Self-esteem breakdown notwithstanding. I'm impressed with a lot of the sprite entries in particular - but wow, only three for fanfics? Pity.

G'luck to eeeeeeeveryone~

Spoiler: Warning for length and sheer ridiculousness.
Look, I’ll be the first to admit it. I suck, all right?

Believe me, if I knew I would suck this much, I wouldn’t have signed on board. I don’t normally bash myself, but I’ve come to realize that I am without a doubt the most arrogant little girl ever. I like to think I am a writer first and an artist second, which may have led up to this state of affairs, because being able to describe one’s art with pretty words invariably leads to one either looking like a pompous douchebag – which I am – or actually convincing one’s audience – which has happened.

The problem with self-deprecation is that others immediately assume that it will be all better if they give you a goddamn sermon about how wonderful you are. This is not true. This is absolutely not true. With art, you have to push yourself to just get better and better, and if you can’t, well, that’s a ****ing problem right there, now isn’t it? The thing is, I’m precisely the sort of idiot who is tempted to believe it is true, most of the time, and for this entire year I haven’t improved one bit.

See, I’m a high school student. When I was a wee tyke, or rather, three years ago, which is basically the same thing, I was fortunate enough to attend a middle school with a fantastic humanities program, and meet all sorts of talented artists that completely blew me out of the water. When I graduated, I went to a school that was very much science-oriented. Whatever art there is lining the hallways isn’t much, and it isn’t much to look at either, so I started thinking of myself as the coolest piece of crap walking the earth. Artistically. That isn’t quite true either, as my ego is not yet the size of Jupiter, but you understand. Anyway, my high school sucks. Take it from me; I’m a good student.

As if high grades will change my life. I’ve spent more free periods studying or finishing homework that I didn’t get to finish the night before than I’ve spent them drawing, which really gets on my nerves. It’s not that I procrastinate, either, it’s just that my high school is about as overrated as I was about ten minutes ago and believes that more homework is the answer to everything. Never mind the fact that some blessed schools, or states, or entire countries are devoid of homework and doing just fine; homework is the answer to everything. This means that I never get to draw, except doodling in class, and I never get to use my tablet either, because whenever I get home I’ve got to do more work.

Goddamn high school. Obviously there’s the whole argument, ‘oh, you draw so well for a fourteen-year-old, you’ve got plenty of time to learn,’ but that isn’t true either. I’ll be fifteen come July, and for the love of God, age doesn’t make much of a difference anyway. If I could have more time to practice, that might have changed things a little, but honestly, the way things stand now, I suck.

Do not take this for angst-filled teenage rambling; this is purely and honestly the truth.

I suppose I should be happy that I’m a finalist. Maybe I shouldn’t have tried to make the backstory short.

Stupid contest. Entering was a terrible idea; I didn’t even get a chance to finish the second image I’d had in mind, because by the time I could get around to it there was the deadline to consider. Plus I didn’t really like it anyway; it just wasn’t very interesting, and I couldn’t get a good reference for the background. So I went ahead and sent in my application on the 31st , but then as it turned out I had absolutely no homework on June 1st, so I could have finished what I wanted to, but I couldn’t, because I’d already sent it in. Which almost had me tearing my hair out, but the worst part was that I had no work for the entire week, and then all of a sudden on Friday I had two group projects to take care of.

Group projects be damned.

One of them was to film this twenty-minute play, and I had to rush the script, because no one in my group could write it at all, and I became group leader through means of election or some ridiculous bull like that, and then all of a sudden my weekends were something like: rush to girl A’s house to film, rush to girl B’s house to get the memory card, rush back to girl A’s house to see if she can subtitle the film, have girl A rush to my house because she can’t do it after all, because she has a ****ing Mac. Goddamn Macs. They aren’t even useful anyway; half the formats we were using for the film wouldn’t open on her computer for whatever reason, and I don’t trust anything that doesn’t have its own right click button. And don’t even argue with me, I have very literally vomited because of the sheer failure of the Mac during the creation of this film.

This entire film has driven me to the brink of insanity, actually, and I spent ten hours editing, making banners and credits and pretty “scene one” images and adding subtitles – yes, girl A was not able to do it in the end – and messing with the audio and altering the music and blah blah blah. And no one even thought to ask to help. And I had finals the next day. And then when it came time for the presentation, girl B hadn’t quite realized that speakers ought to be plugged into an electricity source and hadn’t brought the cable, so her speakers didn’t work, and I had to send someone down to the second floor of our school to pick up some speakers there, but the ones he just happened to choose were also broken, so we had to show the whole damn thing without speakers.

And I’m pretty damn sure my teacher’s taking points off for that!

BUT ANYWAY

Getting back to the topic.

God, I wish I’d improved more as an artist. It was a terrible idea to do this.

I read through the fanart entries a few days ago (just skimmed through sprites and fanfiction; will get to reading thoroughly once I have more time), and I must say, I was impressed. Inspires me to work more on my OC. xD I had a hard time picking just one entry to vote for; I keep shifting between three or four lol.

But anyhoo, good luck to all the finalists! Win or lose, you all did a splendid job! :D

I know what you mean- that's why I didn't enter this year. I'd rather write my characters, get a large fanbase and draw art of them than battle it out in a comp. I may enter some other year, but I'm not very good with comps.

Shibataea, all I can say in response to your rant is that opening yourself up to criticism (or, in this case, displaying your work for an audience) IS the only way to improve as an artist. You may not feel good about yourself now, but I think once you get over that you'll be glad you were bold enough to enter.

Ahaha, I'm open to criticism, really. I need to learn to use a tablet to begin with; the sketches are completely different, but that's beside the point.

Just that, between this and that and the other thing, a rant was sort of in order. It was kind of fun to write, actually. I actually sort of lost interest in writing it about a quarter of the way through, but I figured I might as well finish. Sadly, I have not been able to compose a rant without including some measure of profanity. Not that it's required or anything, but I think there's some measure of writing skill involved in managing to sound angry without resorting to colloquialisms. When I manage that -- well, I can't really make a career out of writing rants, but at least it's fun.

...I was sort of expecting more amused responses than anything... ah well.

I like the fact that you can't see whose entry is whose very much :3

I've skimmed through the fanart and haven't looked at fanfiction, but sprites are great.

How can I pick just one?!?!!?! (...I did though)

I wanna give Frank a hug <3
...at least I did, and then I saw his sprite with the gun xD

I will be content if we get a repeat of last year... Everything I liked got some sort of award, whether it was 1st, 2nd, or Croik's Choice. (Of course, I really like 4 sprites, which means one has to be excluded!! ;-;)

Also, while I really like it now, will be able to see who entered what once the contest is over?

I have to say that I have a hard time voting ... There are a bunch of entries I like, so narrowing it down is tough; so many creative entries, it's cruel and great at the same time *g* I just hope I end up finding my favorites anyhow.

I totally agree that the fanfics might be limited, but for the fanarts and sprites I thinks it may be better to leave the options to the artists-long character backgrounds are intend to be ignored. They are taking risk for doing so.

to Shibataea:
Actually I think you should be proud of making the finalist! When I was in your age I didn't even know how to draw on computer, honestly.
It's not your fault to be suck(which I think you are not. All entries make to the finalists are pretty good in my opinion). Every one have to start from zero. If you have to do homework now, do it! When I was 14, I had to do my homework until 12:00 AM (or later) everyday, and go to school everyday(yes even on weekends). My parents bought me dozens of reference books every semester and I had to finish all of them. That's how you survive from the competition here. You don't have to do that, don't you? I have to agree with your parents on this-you still have plenty of time on drawing in the future. Not being a good artist is okey, but not being a good student is not good. Don't let yourself down!
You can call me whatever you want:3
