Uhm, I think you mislabeled that third group entry xD

out of curiosity, do you know if these were recorded or synthesized? Just wondering.

Also, no Pursuit ~ Cornered 2001?! :beef: This makes it a lot harder.........

EDIT: Nvm, Blue Badger was amazing xDDD I just can't tell if it's Arabian or Klezmer... (still gots solo to do tho)

Thanks for the headsup, just fixed that^^ Also, they're all performances, including the orchestral rendition of Godot's theme - the person who submitted it transcribed the whole piece by ear and had her school orchestra perform it in concert.

Wow, lucky her that she got her orchestra to do that :beef:

The beginning of Eric Ang's for some reason made me think a lot of the main zelda theme.... He should really do a version of it. He also needs to do Guilty Love xD

Wow, Lauz did that perfectly!! :o Gotta love using multiple tracks xD

Anyway, Natalie's is the only one with Pursuit ~ Cornered 2001 on it, so I gotta vote hers <3

Yes, let's vote on the entry that has the songs we like, instead of the one with the most talented people. That's how this contest was meant to work, right?

/sarcasm

Hey, I'm allowed to vote the way I want to :x (and go listen to all of them. it's kinda hard to pick which one of them is "most talented", in the best possible way xD)

The Dahlia piece was by far the best sounding one. to me. So I voted for it.

I voted for the Badger one because it was interesting. I liked the instruments in it.

I love them all! :franny: Too many greats too choose from!
I guess i liked speak up pup and berry big circus the most. I am tired of hearing remixes of Godot's theme.... :larry:

I voted for Speak up pup, just because I loved the way it sounded. Can't remember which solo I voted for...

I voted Blue Badger and Requem For A Fey. For me they were the most interesting ones.

I voted for the Blue Badger, since I just loved the instruments which they chose. It was hard to choose between the vocal Godot's theme and the Requiem for a Fey, so I voted for both with two computers. XD

Post subject:  Re: Gyakusheets Performance Contest 2010 - Cast Your Vote!

I loved most of them. I also agree I've heard Godot's theme way too much, but I loved it for the group performance!

I listened to the Vocal Godot's theme, but I was going to decide to vote for the Requiem of Fey.

Then finished Natalie's. I absolutely loved Natalie's. It made me so happy hearing all the good stuff bunched into one. I voted for her!! Best Solo!

Also, shouldn't matter how you vote. Either it has a song you like, or how well they play. If you like a part of the song, you voted for what you liked best.

They obviously had the talent to know what people like. ;)

Just sayin'!

Thank you to all contestants! :maya:

...

Just goes to show the general public knows nothing about music *shrug*

Edit: That was in response to the SOLO entries. I expected the orchestra to win the group one, especially as all the group entries were really good. (I just thought the Godot Orchestra were trying too hard to sound like the original). It's just, to me, none of the really good solo entries got into the top 3, except Natalie's. (Which deserved 2nd.)

I still stand by my belief that putting things to a general vote never works right.

I was torn between Godot's theme and the Blue Badger one. But I swayed towards the Blue Badger. That bell part in the beginning is..... cute~<3

Hmmm.... Maybe I can get my college concert band to play a piece for next year... *deep in thought* Hmmmmm.... If I had the music (and people to transpose; I play flute, so I've never EVER learned XD) I could totally do it.

*inspired*

Edit: It was rather funny, I was listening more like a band director and less like a band student. Like, late entires, key signatures, that sort of thing. I've been totally brainwashed by my band director.

Funny story (that has nothing to do with this) Yesterday, my friend and I decided to pop in on our old director (we graduated last year) and say Hi. She called the band to attention...

...and we responded. Pure reflex. After we had done it we were all like "Why the hell we'd do that? What? MRS. RICHTER, YOU BRAINWASHED USSSSS :larry:" our friend (who is a Sophomore in high school) lol'd at us.

My director has taught me well.

Anywho, I thought that "hey, since there's a zillion Godot remixes, I'll vote for something different." Besides...

Who doesnt love that wriggling piece of plywood? XD

Uhm, with all due respect, I find that to be a little rude both to the winners and the webmaster. I know you're entitled to your own opinion, but to say that "the general public knows nothing about music" is a bit much... The contest was intended to find the general public's favorite pieces, so no, I don't believe that putting it to a general vote was the wrong choice.

As far as the entries, I think some of the other ones were absolutely fantastic and would have deserved to win as well, but if an entry was put on the shortlist, it was because it was considered to be worthy of potentially placing. And I'm not going to speak for myself, but I thought first place was well-deserved. Lauz not only performed the guitar, bass, lead keyboard and backing keyboard tracks herself, but she played them all by ear and they meshed together perfectly and sounded amazing. I just feel like basically saying that she didn't deserve to win is a little disrespectful after all the hard work she put in. (And for the record, just because a piece stays faithful to the original composition doesn't make it less worthy of winning -- your preference might be different arrangements, but this was the Gyakusheets performance contest, not the remix contest, so it was perfectly fine for people not to deviate from the original if they didn't want to.)

And I mean I'm not trying to be rude or anything, truly, I know you're entitled to your own opinion and your favorite picks WERE gorgeous pieces, but I feel like maybe you should be a little bit more respectful in the way you express yourself in the future. It could have been anyone's game; the fact that the majority vote didn't coincide with yours doesn't mean that everyone was wrong and people "know nothing about music." :\

You should see some of the other mods, they often get away with waay more than I do. *shrug*

I never said that the other people weren't good. I just... think that popularity is a bad way to judge the quality of anything. People always go for 'safeness' or traditionality. Or newness. Take from that whatever you like.

On the other hand, you're right. The contest was set up as a poll, and it would be wrong of me to suggest that the guys didn't deserve the win. But I am allowed to suggest that maybe there could be contests in the future with official judges.

Yeah, and I mean, that's cool! I definitely understand where you're coming from. Sometimes it really is better to have set judges instead of this approach, I just wanted to make sure that you guys knew the winners worked really hard on their pieces too so it wasn't like stuff that took two seconds to put together made it to the top. But I get what you're saying~! Maybe in the future someone can organize a contest like that. (:

Ha...! I'm pretty sure that 'Keun et al' guy made every member of his orchestra vote for him. :godot:

It's a pity the Requiem for a Fey didn't place. It was real damn good.

Post subject:  Re: Gyakusheets Performance Contest 2010 - Winners Announced!

Sorry guys, I'm quite late replying to this (I've just started my masters degree and it's taking up a lot of my time) - just to let you know I will be changing the judging method next time around due to some discrepancies in the vote counts between the solo and group entries (the vote count in solo was nearly triple that of group - in legit voting I would expect the numbers to be about the same). This didn't come up as an issue in the 2008 contest because there was only one group entry and they won by default, therefore there was no poll up for the group category in 2008. I'm not going to say any more details than that because as others have pointed out, the point of shortlisting was to generate a list of entries that were worthy of placing, therefore everybody in the shortlist equally deserved to get somewhere in the voting. But suffice to say, it's a lesson learned and I will be doing things differently next time. The reason for opting for a poll method of selecting the winners is because I'm a classically trained violinist/pianist and therefore don't have the relevant technical expertise to judge players of other instruments e.g. guitar, vocal, woodwind etc. However, I did email all entrants with general constructive feedback about their pieces with regard to timing, dynamics, quality of arrangement etc.

Hope that clears a few things up! ^^
