I'm excited to see where this game takes us and I hope we get some answers about what's happening to other characters from past games, even if it's just a passing not in a conversation.

Ah, yes, it's very true. I very nearly lost a DS that day.
Eshiro's problem with GK1 that got worse in GK2 was (in my opinion) Edgeworth's limited range as a protagonist. He'd been fleshed out so thoroughly in the other games there was literally nowhere for them to take him that wasn't retracing their steps (which is why Edgeworth had to discover what it means to be a lawyer over and over). The cast was so bloated with cameos it left very little room for original characters, which meant forcing the drama to revolve around a limited number of people that had little to nothing to do with Edgeworth himself. Add to that the fact the Edgeworth isn't exactly big in the empathy department, and toward the end of GK2 I felt like I had no connection to the cases going on. The one time that Edgeworth really broke down and got emotionally involved, it was just so over the top and ridiculous. AND IT MADE NO SENSE THAT PHOENIX WASN'T THERE FOR IT. Bah.
So I'm not sure what this means for Phoenix back in the driver's seat. We already have a lot of Phoenix's backstory plotted out, from before he lost his badge. He's done the "life lessons for lawyers" class a few times already. I don't think the writers are as nervous of making him appear foolish or flat out wrong as they were Edgeworth, so hopefully the cases will go back to having a believable degree of tension. If his stint away from the courtroom helps him to empathize more than ever with his clients, great. But it's already hard for me to imagine how they can make the states higher for him than when Maya was kidnapped by an assassin (or on trial for murder, or trapped in an icy cave...). Can they even threaten to take away his badge again? They're going to have to develop strong bonds between Phoenix and his cases hopefully WITHOUT resorting to cameos in order to keep things fresh. But there are two areas they can definitely tap:
1. Phoenix's time as a non-lawyer. Maybe a friend of his (from the bar?) got in trouble while he was disbarred and unable to help, and now Phoenix has the chance to revisit their case. I know Capcom wants to shuffle that era of Phoenix's hobodom under the rug, but it's an important part of his characterization, and I'd love to see Phoenix expressing gratitude to someone that helped him out when he was at rock bottom with a new daughter, that sort of thing.
2. Phoenix's relationship with Trucy. If they want to say that Apollo is handling his own cases and Trucy is helping him offscreen somewhere... I'll deal. But they can't write Trucy out completely, she is his daughter, and still a minor when this game takes place. You don't get to see the daddy-daughter relationship in most games (and when you do the dad is dead, especially in this series: Karma, Byrne, Russel, Drew, Zak). We have a unique opportunity to see the father's perspective here, and I hope they embrace that rather than pretend Trucy's totally autonomous, or that she disappears back to Kurain when convenient or what have you.

I'm definitely in the Apollo camp. While I love Phoenix, it's hard to see what sort of development the creators can take him with anymore. It's kinda like having Dumbledore or Mia as the main character. While they're really cool, they're so wise and seasoned that it's hard to imagine room for character growth from them anymore. I feel like Apollo is a much better candidate for character growth and providing an enjoyable story. I always thought it was a shame that even in his own titled game he got all the glory stolen from him by Phoenix's story. There's so much I want to know about Apollo, like why he became an attorney, how was his life was as an orphan, what his reaction is to his true heritage,etc. There's so much room for development compared to Phoenix in my eyes. Plus, just compare what you knew about Phoenix by the end of the first game compared to what we know about Apollo by the end of his game. While we, the audience know all about his true relation to Trucy and Lamoroir, Apollo himself doesn't. The last case of AJ was all about Phoenix. By the end of the game, Apollo really hadn't done much of anything.
Geez, I didn't mean to turn so rambly. I'm okay with it now, Phoenix looks daper as heck and I'm just excited to have a new mainline game. I'm sure both Apollo and Trucy will be central characters due to their relationship with Phoenix. Hopefully even if he isn't the main character, we can still see some character development for Apollo.

I agree with this. At first I was pretty "meh" when I heard that Nick was coming back (and that he had a new assistant, which already had a negative impact on me since I was really, really, really looking forward to seeing an older Maya), but damn did that redesign win me over LOL. The new assistant, in my opinion, resembles Trucy a lot, but I know that not much has been revealed about her yet so I'm not jumping to any conclusions. The new 3D models look interesting and are definitely a step up from sprites if you asked me. I just hope the animations run smoothly and don't appear choppy because that would just make playing awkward and annoying as hell.
Now, regarding Apollo...
I'm going to flat-out admit that I dislike Apollo and didn't enjoy playing "his" game. But that's because his character just wasn't fleshed-out enough and for all intents and purposes we were just playing a Phoenix clone in red clothing and with stronger vocal chords. Apollo hasn't even been mentioned at all in the news we have regarding AA5 so far, so I really don't know what Capcom decided to do with him. They didn't retcon the events of AJ:AA, yeah, but there are SO MANY loose threads hanging. Keeping my fingers crossed that Capcom finds a way to resolve these, even if they're just mentioned in passing. I have, however, read an interesting theory on these forums about the possibility of Apollo switching to prosecution.
In AJ:AA Apollo seems really pissed about the Court System since it "protects criminals" (replay Case 3 Turnabout Serenade, he's really bitchy about it when Daryan refuses to testify). Someone on these forums (I forget who, though) said that Apollo's personality isn't really fit for a defense attorney at all, and that he'd be much more suited to being a prosecutor.
But until we get more info, who really knows? Personally I'd like to see Kay Faraday as the main prosecutor.
P.S. Is it me, or does Phoenix NOT look like he's 35 years old? He looks 21. Reverse aging? :P

Phoenix's character had a "LOST"-like mystery to him because I didnt know him from the other games. When I went back, it was nice to know where hed turn up and it helped my experience with his character a lot.
But replaying Apollo after the others, I can see why people dint always like him much. The characters while good arent always always at the level the originals were. They did a good job making them different but Apollo and Trucy sometimes feel like a Phoenix and Maya clone. (this was mostly done on purpose, though). Wrights story still holds up really well, and will probably become the most important part of that story. I almost think newcomers should play Apollo first, as it would give them more to love from the game, but I guess that would also screw up the impact of the original.

Thanks! So I guess the new girl is there from the beginning. Usually the games start out pretty quickly so unless they have a huge cutscene in the beginning that might hint that we know her somehow already. Although it could also be the Ace Attorney's formula of "introduce it in the first case, explain it in the last case."
I also wonder what that little box is with the conversation bubbles. Could this be a record of everything that's been said in the case? That would be a great feature. There have been a few times where I miss an objection because I misremembered a number or a statement from an investigation phase.
I was reading the capcom forums about this game, and someone pointed out the people in the shots. There are a lot more people than were in the courtroom in earlier games, and a lot of them are dressed like normal citizens. Also, rather than having them up on a balcony above the lawyers, they are seated at the back of a courtroom much more simliar to the traditional courtroom/jury bench. I at first was concerned about the game making Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney irrelevant, but now I think they're starting to do the opposite. It seems they're taking a lot of care to make it a true sequel (from a storyline sense

The irony was by the end of Nick's first game, we knew more about Nick than we did about Apollo at the end of "his" game. We know Trucy and Apollo are sibilings (half siblings?) but Apollo doesnt, how would he react to that? Surely big story threads like this need to be touched upon and cleared up?

I love GS but it's really sad that Shu Takumi isn't involved in this anymore (and that's maybe the main reason I don't really like AAI), it's just not the same without him.
For me, the first three games were enough for the series, but then AJ happened, and although I've always though that it would never be superior to the first games, it's not that bad. But when I finished AJ I felt like there were way too many holes left... For that part I'm glad they're making GS5, because yeah, you have to make new characters and new plots and all, but they can't just leave Apollo and Trucy abandoned like that! They must be in the game, and not just that, there has to be some development with them.
So now... seeing Phoenix Wright as the main protagonist, I would really love to see Maya and Pearl. Some of you have said that maybe Maya is very busy being the Master, but I don't believe Maya would just leave Nick and her sister's agency alone. The Fey Clan were a great part in Nick's life, and I refuse to believe that they just lost contact or something like that.
They don't need to be the central plot, not anymore, but at least they should still be alive in the series. Right? :D

It would definitely help if we at least see Apollo in Phoenix's eyes here, I think a character can be a bit more interesting when the player isn't actually controlling him because it's a bit more subtle that way. However It also really wouldn't surprise me that much if Apollo gets completely ignored, by simply referring to him as that defense attorney in red, after all this is the AAI team, they did their very best to walk around the disbarment, chronologically speaking just so they won't step on Takumi's toes with conflicting storylines, characters etc.
The very fact that we know very little about Apollo's backstory, makes him very susceptible to being on the prosecuting side, so I understand why people think that. And yes, fuck yes I want to see Kay as the prosecutor, either that she must be the new assistant in disguise. :P Any AAI exclusive characters would definitely be a treat, cameos or little hints anything that can connect both GK & GS together, and the possibilities are way higher now since the AAI team are the ones mostly involved.

Not sure how I like the idea...
Granted; Api was eager to prove himself in the AJ.
In that sense, if he's all for the glory and impatient person,
he might switch from little to no-know defense attorney to prosecutor.
And like Neni gal here already stated, it could give some interesting possibilities for the story.
But I'm still bit against it though...
Sure we don't know why he became a defense attorney in the first place,
but I just can't really imagine him as a prosecutor.
Red against blue or not... :/

GS5 is just going to highlight what's already been established before: the justice force is corrupt (police and prosecutors). They're just going to show us how dark it can get.

It's possible that there's more to it, though. Good writing usually has more than just one layer to it.
