The Verge has translated an interview with Motohide Eshiro and Takeshi Yamazaki, the producer and director, respectively, of Gyakuten Saiban 5. In it, they discuss Phoenix's shift in design, returning characters, 3D, the theme of the game, and even Dark Payne. Some excerpts:
On Maya and the new assistant:

She looked almost alien-like at first, which was partly due to the fact that her background was a lot different than it is today. Yellow was always her theme color, though — she really has a drive to win, so in that respect she's a fair bit different than Maya."
On other returning characters:

To recreate that feel in 3D, we're deliberately messing with the pace, inserting pauses and skipping over other things. With 2D we played around with perspectives — drawing Phoenix's hand larger than usual when he's pointing at someone — and we're taking measures to recreate that sort of thing in 3D."

That said, I'm excited about how they're going to do the heritage of the game's art style justice in the new 3D setting. Sudden motions, exaggerated poses, you can't do that with a motion tween and a wireframe. (And unfortunately, they sometimes forgot this in the 2D world. Compare Mias and Phoenix's big fingered Objection's to Apollo's. Apollo just doesn't have that IN YOUR FACE OBJECTION.
And, I'm glad that the aid isn't going to be a Maya clone. Maya was my second least favorite defense aid, possibly after Maggey. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE else in the main series brought more to a case as an aid.

So, this pretty much confirms that Apollo isn't retconned and still exists? I liked how the interviewer didn't ask about him.
Glad that they're keeping Phoenix's maturity from GS4. I hate for them to give him back his PW-era's personality.

Well, I think that's a confirmation that at least some of the characters from the original trilogy will be back. I have expectations for Gumshoe, and possibly Edgeworth as guest prosecutor or something. From AA4 I'd also expect Trucy at least to be there, alongside Apollo, and possibly Klavier. I'm pretty exited for more details, and I really can't wait to find out who the main prosecutor is as well.

To sum: When we did the original pick your prosecutor contest, we awarded the winner who got the guess closest to Klavier once he was named.
But, we didn't realize until after the fact, that he had a brief cameo in the original reveal trailer. We had originally dismissed him as Kristoph or some villain or something.
So, first HINT of the new prosecutor we lock the Pick your Prosecutor contest thread. But if it's like Klavier's teaser, it may be months before we know enough details to call a winner. So once we 'know' the prosecutor, we'll pass out prizes.

I must say, I'm quite happy that Phoenix has taken the fashion advice of Edgeworth and has decided to put on a vest to look a little more professional .... although I will miss his hoodie.
Not sure what to think of Miss Yellow .... if she's more set on winning, I hope she has better brains than the majority of people in this game.

The only thing that annoys me is how vague he was about other characters. His reply could mean "yeah theyre in the games" or it could mean "theyre nowhere to be found but to reassure you theyre somewhere in the world." also, I would have really preferred the interviewer ask about Apollo or Trucy rather than Maya. Maya's story was resolved. She doesnt need to return. It would be cool as a little cameo but it doesnt need to happen. Even Edgeworth doesnt need to return as Ive heard AAI2 was a good "end" to his story. But Apollo and Trucy not returning is detrimental to the narrative. Why didnt the interviewer ask about them?
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

I know! I mean if Apollo was the protagonist of the last game, they can't just make him disappear or just hand wave it. Also, Trucy IS HIS DAUGHTER! If she's not in it then we know that the continuity's screwed.

As for Maya, I like that she's no longer the sidekick, she doesn't need to be. However, she HAS to feature in some role, if even as a simple cameo. By not showing her or at least mentioning her you are implying that her and Phoenix fell out of touch and that would be an unfortunate story to tell without some purpose. Edgeworth on the other hand, I'm not so worried about either way. You could easily see him and Phoenix going their separate ways, with only irregular meetings. That's the type of person that Edgeworth is really. Larry...yeah...you just know he'll find a way to pop up whether you want it or not.
Will Ema still be the local detective? I only ask this because I feel like she might be a little too forthcoming to Phoenix, being as she loves him (non-romantically of course). I get the feeling she'll be replaced by a new detective, but then again perhaps not considering how much the AA developers seem to love her. I'd actually like to see her in, because Detective Ema does need development, but obviously the too forthcoming thing needs to be resolved.
Now in terms of prosecutors, this 'Payne's Dark Brother' thing is confirmed (absolutely ridiculous, but could be fun), but presumably he's just prosecutor in the first case. The main prosecutor I'd imagine will be someone new. However, the big question is does Klavier Gavin make an appearance. Again, he needs development. He's always seemed like a cool character to me, but one that we need to know a lot more about to understand his actions and motives. However, with this, I don't hold much hope for him. I get the feeling everything AJ will be swept under the rug, Klavier and Kristoph included, and that's a shame because I actually really liked Klavier as a prosecutor, mainly because he wasn't a complete jerk and that was a really nice change-up. That and the air guitar.
I could go on all day about my hopes and desires for this game, but in reality, the only real desire I have for this game is a Western release. Please Capcom, make it happen (and have AAI2 as a special bonus feature!).

Justice For All, Apollo and Edgeworth 2 were more darker and had better plot twists and im glad this game is going with that tone.

This obviously isn't being approached as a reboot, they have nothing to gain from ignoring the developments between Phoenix, Apollo and Trucy in AA4.

About the characters, maybe they'll make a mix and bring some old faces as keeping some recent ones. I think Trucy, Apollo and Ema as the detective (it's just a year later, she would still be there) would be kept. From the olds, I bet on Edgeworth. Having a plot of "dark on the courthouse", I don't think it would suit him to just ignore it and calmly have tea at his couch instead
I think he would participate in some kind of way.And I liked they changed the assistant, it brings a fresh air. But Maya was responsible for a good part of the humor, I hope they still work on it in a contrast with Phoenix's maturity.

I'm also interested in how they'll do Phoenix's personality. Personally I'd like it to be a mix of his behavior in AJ and T&T. He should maintain his maturity from #4, but he always seemed a little depressed to me in AJ. Now that he's got his life back on track, I'd like to see a few more of those goofy genuine smiles that were so rare in Apollo Justice.

Phoenix Wright has returned as the protagonist
Eshiro: We had Apollo Justice as the protagonist in AA4, so you'd wonder why Phoenix is back again. He had quit being a lawyer in 4, but actually, at the end of 4, he said something like, I want to take the bar exam again. Also to fullfil this foreshadowing, we wanted to have Phoenix back at the defense bench.
Yamazaki: I think a lot of players were curious to what became of Phoenix after that. We just had to make clear what happened after 4. In 44, Phoenix with his knit cap was 33 years old. 5 is set one year after that, he has become a defense attorney again and has obtained an adult sense of coolness. So to show his growth in his designs too, I gave him a vest, and opened his jacket, to show the leeway he gained.
Eshiro: Actually, we tried a lot, like giving him a beard or making him wear a sweater, to give him presence.
Yamazaki: And his forelock. Just by a little forelock, we gave him an adult look. But the backside is the same (laugh).
And the chain on Phoenix' breast?
Yamazaki: That is the pendant Phoenix had in 4. He put it in his pocket.
About the Mentality System
Can we ask about the game systems?
Yamazaki: We announced a bit about the new system. It is a system that allows you to deduce not from evidencec, but from a psychological side.
Eshiro: You find contradictions in emotions, like when someone is happy during a sad event and deduce from there. You'll find something new there, from which the story will develop.

Oh good, that was a stupid plothole in GS4, you assumed he must be talking about the jury, but then he's the one who helps implement it so that can't be it, and you just assume he was being bitter and depressed since nothing else happened. Perhaps some of the other plotholes will also be retrospectively 'fixed'. Like, maybe the yellow woman is the source of the inexplicable MASON System? Maybe the insane planet alignment of the vs Misham murder/case might also be better explained...
I didn't think they'd ever have Phoenix as main protagonist at 34, especially since GS4 went younger, but then I realised - this is like the 10th anniversary game (even though it won't come out this year.) Phoenix was 24 in GS1 and this is 10 years later. And people who played the first game in 2001 might even be that old by now...
So will we see a jury? If not, easy they just say it's part of the 'corruption' it didn't get implemented after all.... if they do, maybe it's re-using the 'mob justice' thing supposedly in PL vs PW

Um no. If it HAD been that way and confirmed Phoenix retook the bar and things were looking up, maybe this game wouldn't have been the way it is. The end GS4 he just gives a vague ambiguous statement that everyone just argued about so it's only 'up to your imagination' if he ever took the Bar again, and it raised way more questions than answers.
Yeah it's true GS3 was supposed to be an end for Phoenix that wrapped everything up nicely, that was the way Takumi designed it and only brought back Phoenix again because Capcom said he had to instead of writing an entirely new game/s with a totally new lawyer/cast (Apollo) as first intended, it probably would have been better if that had happened, but it didn't, blame Capcom's marketing department. (Or if Phoenix's cameo had been less controversial, then everyone would have been content to focus on Apollo instead of Phoenix's character gaining so many new unresolved issues.)
Okay, why do people think Apollo is 'unresolved' from GS4? His characterisation is INCOMPLETE, not unresolved, with them not bothering to write backstory and a million other things meaning he has plenty of POTENTIAL for character development narrative whatever so games could be written about him. But my impression was there's nothing major unresolved they opened up. He's no longer a rookie lawyer, he's off lawyering now, they found his family (well, some of it), even though Thalassa was too cheap to let him know about it in the actual game it's not hard to write a fanfic about her deciding to tell him 'when the time is right'. Also, there's nothing to stop them writing this characterisation without Apollo as the main. Edgeworth arguably had way more character development/backstory/even attention in GS1/2 than Phoenix without us ever playing as him. You'll claim that argument goes for GS4 Phoenix, and it does, to a point, although Phoenix is harder because he's a way more controversial figure with his presentation in GS4 whereas Apollo's just an average good lawyer, and Phoenix can't be put on murder trial YET AGAIN. For all you know Phoenix will dredge up Apollo's father this time.

Yeah it doesn't make sense, but many people maintained this 'wasn't a problem' re: certain major 1-3 chars in GS4 disappearing without trace even by the Apr 29 flashback....
I hope Mike Meekins doesn't turn up yet again.
This game is giving me the impression of a '1-5' - not as in another 'direct thematic sequel to 1-5' (that was GS4) but in a sort of 'connected but separate additional huge case/s'. 1-5 of course wasn't particularly necessary, but was a good self-contained story that vaguely spun on (and ret-conned) aspects of GS1/partly 2 in hindsight. Except it'll probably be GS4 not GS1 here. Phoenix investigates systemic corruption with yet another new mysterious sidekick/cast bla bla bla. Except Phoenix isn't a rookie (and might be The Edgeworth, if they ret-con away/explain his own corruption hmmm...) and the final boss has got to be way BIGGER kingpin than Gant.

Actually, I think Phoenix' "story" was finished with Case 2-4. The entirety of T&T felt like a storytelling of the Fey Clan and why it is apparently so super, duper important. I mean, really. Phoenix' most important Case was 2-4 (however annoying he was in it) and he learned something there.

And ok then, I'm not too worried, all I want is my AA fix at the end of the day, but please at least have AJ and Trucy in this game. They are in the middle of a story arc, AJ left loads of loose ends.
This is just my optinion, so I'm going to point some things out.
1. For me, Phoenix's story was never over.
Sure, he lost his badge and later, he played some songs on the piano and played cards with several customers, but I don't see why Phoenix would give up so easily. He isn't like that kind of guy who would throw everything away and just give up.
2.I'm pretty sure that Trucy will show up.
At least Trucy is Phoenix's daughter and he loves her more than anything in the world (or at least I think so *cough*), so why wouldn't she show up in the game? As for Maya, I think there's no chance of bringing her back, since she's busy in Kurain and all and she probably wants to be a Medium instead of walking back to Phoenix and help him out. And that's why the new assistant is here. She's like.. a replacing for Maya.
3.Now for Apollo.
His story isn't finished yet, that's true, but maybe he will have a case in GS 5, who knows? We all can dream about this, now can't we? Or he investigates with Phoenix in a case. Who knows?

Exactly. I hope that Gumshoe will show up or at least a freshly new detective, at least please they should pick someone who shows interest in the job.

Sounds a lot like the Perceive system to me.
I sure hope they have better puzzles than "zomg y u happy about the murder?!"

Favorite detective was Ms. Angel Starr, who actively tried to hide the facts. There's different ways of presenting the case via detective. They just need to try them out.

I personally hope to see a new detective, along with ema as a forensic Scientist. Id actually be fine with Ema being the detective again but it would be more interesting this way.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

And as for Phoenix matching his AJ:AA personality more...I really don't know what to make of that. For me the difference isn't between him in AA1-3 and him in AJ, it's between whether the player is controlling him or not. When we're controlling him he's the straight man to the ridiculous people around him and we only laugh at him when he makes snide comments in his head or becomes the butt of someone's joke. But when we're playing as Apollo, he becomes the funny one who everyone else is the straight man to, whether it's Apollo getting increasingly baffled by everything he says or Payne getting owned by him. The latter personality is of course how he seems to be for most of AJ, but then when we play as him during the Mason system, he seems to be more like his old self, once again making the snide remarks in his head, but otherwise, mostly being the only sane person around.

Back when I first played Apollo (And assumed there'd be an Apollo Justice sequel) wanted it to be "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney - Trial By Jury". Looking back it isn't such a good title. (Maybe that's why Law & Order: Trial by Jury was cancelled. It could also be that the woman who played Lillith on "Fraiser" wasn't a good choice for an emotional DA. I watch way too many reruns.)
They could always make the switch to numbers, too. While I like the titles and think that it would be confusing to have a 5 out of nowhere, it might make it easier for new people to know its a new game. I know when I was new it was really hard to figure out which game was what without the internet at my fingertips. Then again now a days everyone has cellphones.

Ace Attorney, Justice for All, Trials & Tribulations, Ace Attorney (AJ), Investigations...
All of these had their numerical removed, except the AAI of course.
Besides, it'd be odd to release the game in here, even though on new console but still, as Ace Attorney 5
Granted though, that could be nice little marketing trick for all the new players who got in to the serie with this and liked it.
They'd search info from the previous titles online and then hopefully buy the previous games too.
Probably not gonna happen, but random thoughts are always nice, ne?
Anyway...Now I kinda think it's bit shame they already used the Rise from the Ashes title already.
It'd had make SO nice name for this game TBH...Based on the little info we have.
Dark Days huh? ...To be honest now; I'm not that fan of that kinda title.
It just doesn't sound that...AA-ish...Dark Trials (or something) on the other hand could be more like it,
but I hope they don't go there really...
