This week's Famitsu is in the wild; our last before Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney finally sees release in Japan.

The game scored 9/9/9/8 in Famitsu (which uses 4 reviews with a 10-point scale) for a total of 35/40. For reference, Ace Attorney Investigations 2 scored 8/8/8/8.

Nintendo Dream also had some new info and comments; here's what the folks on 2ch have scrounged up. Hopefully we'll get a more detailed look sooner or later.

I took a look at Nintendo Dream.

Layton and Luke's illustrations were also done by [Kazuya] Nuri. [A Capcom character designer.]
Akihiro Hino [Head of Level-5] felt that Takumi was really able to make Layton feel like Layton in his writing.
The reason Luke's clothes changed from the initial trailer was because they were still deciding whether or not to include Emmy [a main character in the prequel Layton games] in the game. Once they decided Layton and Luke were fine on their own, they changed Luke's costume so it wasn't the one from the Layton prequel trilogy.
The court sections are said to match a Layton game in general difficulty, with a max of only 8 pieces of evidence in the Court Record at any given time.

That's the gist of it, anyways.
The interview is about 10 pages.

I'm not sure how i feel about 8 pieces of evidence at one time, but i guess some will get discarded and new will fit in, so it's kind of like a 2nd/3rd case difficulty.

Pretty good score! :pearl:

Just a moment! While I agree that the game is 50-50 regarding PL and AA, but 8 pieces max is a rather big disappointment. Keep in mind that with each case the number of evidence rises together with the difficulty of the cases. If the absolute climax of the game fits within a 2nd/3rd case difficulty, that would mean that the rest of the game would be a breeze and the final climax would also be, well... anti-climatic.

I also hope they didn't 'dumb down' the Layton puzzles as I enjoy a good challenge. I get that making the game more easy will mean it's playable by a bigger audience (*cough* mainstream gaming?!? *cough*), but it seems like a waste of potential for this ambiguous game.
Face your emptiness don't be afraid. The danger is often smaller than your fear.

The game is about 25-30 hours long.

Even though the game's two directions are so different, it doesn't feel strange.
Both games' personalities really shine through.
There's a sort of air of festivity to the whole thing, but that's not all it is.
The witch trials still have the thrill of Ace Attorney court scenes, and the strategies you have to use are even more fun.
The "questioning" (toitsumeru, where Phoenix can call out a specific witness) system is also fun.
Since you can use hint coins in court, there's not much to worry about.
The puzzles are generally well-linked with the story.
The 3D characters look really good, and the game's direction is great as well.
The character's humorous lines are good too.
...Even when they're just read, not spoken.
The game's direction is great at getting the player excited.
Since you're swapping between the two systems, there's not a lot of surprise in the gameplay.

Hint coins AND only 8 pieces of evidence? Auch.

What do they mean with "since you're swapping between the two systems, there's not a lot of surprise in the gameplay"?

I'm not 100% sure - that was one of the bullet points that I was a little shaky on (hopefully Ash/Neni/BP/someone can take a look as well). I presume they mean that the game follows a very set pattern of Layton -> Phoenix -> Layton -> Phoenix... with little gameplay crossover or switching up of the formula.
