Well, my hype for this just shot up even more. The courtroom in particular looks awesome.

Is it just me or is witness stand... kinda... wide?

Could it be... reusing certain use of an unusually wide witness stand?

I was about to say, if I closed my eyes I would think this was the theme of a new Layton game.

The logo disappoints me.

Now we need an old timey narrator for this game, like the legend or korra one.

I've guessed since we first saw the scans that the armband is probably a stand in for the attorney's badge, but...

Image

Anyone see anything familiar on the upper right? :godot:

EDIT: I might be grasping at straws on this one but, the sword and shield button on his lapel kind of reminds me of the design for the King of Prosecutors award from Rise From the Ashes. Not that he's a prosecutor or anything like that, of course...

There is something that looks similar to an attorney badge!

Edit: also, could anyone wrote a little transcript of the trailer subs? Only have my tablet at the moment...!

Eh. The trailer didn't really do anything for me. The only new things it really showed were one piece of music and a handful of backgrounds, and... meh.

Still, looking forward to

I swear, that musical piece has to be an excerpt from the opening theme of the game. This will be the first mainstream GS game with an opening theme, can you believe it? I know I can.

How many times shall I listen to it? Dunno, but it's worth it.

Edit: Or maybe it's the cross-examination theme after all, but I can't help but feel the final few notes were part of some sort of Objection theme.

This game will be fantastic, because I love period pieces. Especially dealing with old Japan. Great stuff.

Of course, I STILL have to beat Ace Attorney 5. And get Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. And get PL.vs.AA when it comes here finally. :viola:

One of my Twitter followers just raised an important question that I hadn't even thought about.

How the hell are they going to localize this title? They've pretty much shot themselves in the foot by saying that the games take place in California, and Americanizing everything. They even had to call the traditional Japanese village in AA5 a place founded by "immigrants." What are they going to do here?

Since this game takes place in the past, they could just say that Phoenix's ancestors later immigrated to America. Tenma Town and Nine Tales Vale was a completely different story, since it would be unbelievable if the Wright Anything Agency went to Japan for a trial.

Spoiler: Here ya go (Bolt's subs, I just wrote them down)
Capcom presents
The turn of the 20th Century in the Empire of Japan

"Amongst the upheaval of Meiji, a new dawn for the law arrives..."
"Another story, unknown until now..."

(text on protagonist's silhouette) "The ancestor who originated that spirit of 'turnabout'"
NARUHODOU RYUUNOSUKE
(text on assistant's silhouette) "The one beautiful flower who blooms in this new world"
MIKOTOBA SUSATO

"The founder and forefather"
"Now, these two shall meet and bring about a miracle"

(logo)

Now that I think about it the localization is going to be incredibly hard... They can't just americanize it, and they can't just keep the japanese setting intact, since the protagonist has the same surname as Phoenix, so he's got to be a Wright... And you can't just call him Ryuunosuke Wright... Can they? :I

As has been discussed previously, there are a few workarounds. A few good ones I've seen:

1) The most obvious is to retcon and ignore what AA1 established and just say the series takes place in Japan. Not the most graceful option.

2) Phoenix (and anyone else that has ancestors represented here) has ancestry that comes from Japan, and in the 100+ years between the games, their families at one point or another migrated to America. Probably the easiest to believe.

3) The ridiculous option, just straight out claim that this is the wild wild west, and refer to everything as an Americanized version of whatever the Japanese equivalent of the time would be (ramen noodles? More like hamburgers!). Since there is a Little Tokyo in present-day LA, it could be like the beginnings of that.

4) Phoenix passed out while watching Maya's Steel Samurai tapes, and the whole thing is a giant fever dream.

If we get localization, I think this is the only option out of the ones you gave. I sincerely doubt they are going to retcon the fact that the game takes place in America. Why can't Phoenix be descended from Japan? It makes sense.

Though #4 was pretty humorous. It would make for a very disappointing ending.

Perhaps they'll even find away to throw in Harvey Birdman into the mix. After all, it's pratically the same game and by Capcom. :meekins:

OR
5) They could 4-Kids it. Keep it set in Japan, but English-ify the name (I.e: Ryuunosuke Naruhohou = Ryan Wright, Susato Mikotoba = Susan Michaels) Just like Ran Moori = Rachael Moore in the English translation of Detective Conan. And change some Japanese specific things to American (The ever classic 'Ramen = Hamburgers' or more realistically, Spaghetti.) Of course, minus the cigarette=lollipop (Although Badd already had a lollipop). Then say Wright's family migrated to California. (As much of a cop-out as this seems, I can picture this being the case.)

If the localized version still has the game take place in Japan, then it'll probably be explained that the whole story being told in English is because it's a translation told by somebody. It's pretty clear then that the characters aren't actually speaking English. Any English jokes, wordplay, puns and other cultural references that aren't visual can be explained with the possibility that the translator just simply substituted the original Japanese ones with suitable English equivalents so the audience won't be confused. Of course, that's assuming the equivalents still make sense in context.

That, or they could include the original Japanese ones, with translator's notes attached to each of them to explain. But in my opinion, that's a pretty bad approach to this.

Anyway, I'm curious to see how the localization team would tackle this (assuming the game is being localized). And I agree with the possibility that they would probably handwave the fact that the other entries of the series takes place in America. One possible explanation is by having the main character say that he plans to emigrate to America later.

Can I opt for option 2.5? Set Wright's ancestors as Americans in Japan. Let him wonder why his ancestors were in Japan at all and as members of the Imperial Army, even.

And return to his grape juice... in a Japanese-style teacup.

Oh god the music. They completely had me when they referenced the Objection 2001 theme around the end of the trailer.
I completely did not expect that arrangement at all! :grey:
Also, this is only my guess... but the composer doesn't really sound like Noriyuki Iwadare from the past games.
There is a chance that it might be Kitagawa-san from PL:AA, but it could also be Masakazu Sugimori from the first AA and Ghost Trick.
