After far too long, the Court-Records Original Character Contest is back! Not familiar with it? The idea's simple: come up with Ace Attorney fan characters and you could win some serious AA swag! (Not to mention some internet bragging points.)

This year, we're celebrating Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, and so the theme is multiple characters - unlike past years, your entry should include between 2 and 5 connected Ace Attorney OCs. These characters must be depicted in the form of a fanwork, in one of three categories: fanart, fanfiction, and spriting. The three categories will be judged entirely separate from each other, and like the Sprite Cup, after a round of private judging, the finalists will be voted on by the public.

What's up for grabs? Well:
  • First place winners in each category will receive the PLvsPW artbook, an attorney's pin from Fangamer, and an Objection! foam finger.
  • Second place winners in each category will receive an attorney's pin from Fangamer, and an Objection! foam finger.
  • Third place winners in each category will receive an Objection! foam finger.

For the full rules and details, check out the contest page! At present, entries will be accepted until September 7th.

When you're ready to enter, we have entry topics set up in the Fanfiction, Fanart, and Sprite subforums.

And finally, if you're an AA writer but don't have time to enter, we're still looking for one more fanfic judge! Please get in contact via e-mail or PM if you're interested. Any questions can either be posted in this topic or e-mailed to us at courtrecord@gmail.com. The position has been filled - thanks for those who sent in interest!

Good luck, everyone!

Hi, I have a question before submitting my entry. Are submissions required to be more than one character? I understand that that's the theme for this years contest, but I focused on one character for my entry, a page of "official art"and a page of expressions.

Yes, actually - we wanted to mix things up from previous years, and we think having multiple OCs interacting opens up a lot of possibilities. It's also more work, so we'll be monitoring folks' responses and we may extend the deadline if needed.

Sorry!

Ok no worries, I'll try and come up with another character to add to the entry.
Kind of ironic seeing as how my character is somewhat a loner, but I'll work something out :)

Edit: ok I have done, its all good!

I'm game. Question: Everything is inspired from something, how do you determine what's a blatant rip off and what seems original?

Purely hypothetical question... would works need to be submit as separate items for each character or could multiple be featured in one?

For example, if it's appropriate to have multiple characters in one sprite, would that still count?
Mr. Edgeworth, do you realize if we played by the rules, we'd be in court right now?

You can have multiple characters in one work (otherwise people'd have to submit who knows how many!)

Well, this puts a halt to my current spriteworks! Not sure to enter in Sprites or Fanart...
Just a question, is posting your entry in the appropriate topic also count as registering? Or do we register separately?

Whoops! What I meant there is that to post on the forums you need to have an account registered.

Posting your entry in the topic is all you need to do to have it 'entered'.

I've been following CR for years now, and I've always wanted to join the OC competitions, and now I can!
Only, it's a little harder this time now that I need multiple characters...

The characters aren't that "wow", but I guess I accidentally went all out, made 5 characters, tried to make them connect to each other, and ended up making a whole case with a murder, a defendant, and witnesses.

I'm just wondering if that's too out of the criteria and a bit too overkill-- I want to try to make this as perfect as I can!

Thank you!

First off, welcome! And I don't think your idea is overkill, it's a great way to flesh out personalities. My characters are all linked to one case, and to eachother prior to said case, so it allows you to flesh out the characters. :will:

Mh, multiple characters... I have one OC, but I never really tried for multiple... well, I can try my hand at making a witness. That might be fun to try out.

Regarding the rules...

Quote:
all entries should not feature any excessive violence, nudity, or graphic sexual content.

How much of cleavage is considered nudity or NSFW? For example, is someone like Lotus from 999 in a ''safe zone'', or not?

I'm not decided whether to participate or not, but I do have a question!
The rules for fanart division say that up to three images can be uploaded, as it can be difficult to make a detailed visual depiction of a character with just one image. But this year's contest is different and requires at least two characters for submission... so shouldn't the rules be modified to 'three pictures maximum per character'? I don't know how other people are managing it, but to me, cramming five(!! My!) characters in three images sounds unnecessarily inconvenient. I get that there are no size limits so it's possible to, uh, perhaps make the canvas larger with a touch of computer technology... But even so, if you wanted to make a very separate, distinct art for each OC, things could get complicated.

Not complaining or anything, just really curious :basil: Could be just that I'm not smart enough. If you have some nice ways in mind, please tell me! :bellboy:

Okay, I have three questions (cause I'm a duntz and I can't understand what the rules are trying to trying to tell me)

Question 1: do two characters count as one entry?

Question 2: if so then how many pieces of artwork are you allowed to submit for that entry?

Question 3: if not how many pieces of artwork are you allowed to submit for one entry?

If you could answer this it would really help :edgey:

The three-piece limit is a bump up from previous contests' two... but (as evidenced below, and through other responses) it's becoming clear people want more room to work with since it's a multiple-OC contest. We'll probably bump that limit up some in the next day or two.

1. That's right - you submit one entry of two to five characters.
2. See above - at present the limit is three, but it's really looking like we need to increase that.
3. See above 2 questions.

Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for the feedback!

Ok now I have two more questions following up on that (sorry if this is any trouble):

1 I've actually submitted four pieces of artwork. Should I just keep it for when (if you decide to that is) increase the number of artwork or should I just take one down for now.

2 will we still be able to submit artwork with canon characters in them?

First, an important update: fanart entries may now have up to five pieces! If you've already submitted and would like to add on to it, just edit your existing entry.

1. Not an issue any more!

2. Canon characters can be present, but your OC(s) should still be a focal part of the picture.

So, I have a somewhat confusing/specific question.
I was hoping to do a fanfic entry, and was trying to come up with plot ideas. (I also realize it's due in 16 days...The past couple weeks have been pretty busy for me, though.) A lot of times, I get inspired by what we read in Language Arts class, and I just finished Pride and Prejudice for my summer homework. I was considering the idea of using a "parody" of that for my entry, since, with the way I have each AA character acting, I would need at least two OC's to supplement (And they'd be pretty major characters).
My question is, would those two characters be considered original enough for the contest? They wouldn't be direct rip-offs of the characters from Pride and Prejudice, even if they would be playing similar roles. The connections between characters are all altered, and the whole thing is modernized, so that would account for some of the differences, while I'm planning to show other changes in character and mannerisms and such.

If all else fails, I have another idea to fall back on, but I like this one better. :pearl:
Thanks! :trucy:

To account for some confusion in the rules, the release of PLvsPW, and other odds and ends, the deadline for the contest has been extended to 11:59 PM PST on September 7th. In other words, a week from the end of tomorrow!

In addition, some frequently-asked questions we’d like to clear up:

  • Do I need to make my OCs from PLvsPW? Nope! You may if you like, but this is not required - they can be “standard” Ace Attorney characters.
  • Can I submit just one OC? No - the theme this year is multiple connected OCs, so please submit between two and five.
  • Where do I submit my entry? Three entry topics are present on the C-R forums (fanart, fanfic, sprites). If you can’t register for the forums or some other issue comes up, please get in touch with us at courtrecord@gmail.com.
  • How many art pieces can I have for a fanart entry? Up to five - we changed this from the initial limit in response to feedback.
  • I already submitted before the deadline extension. Can I revise my work? Yes - we only ask that you remember the no-plagiarism rule. Please don’t take from someone else’s entry! (It’s sad we have to say this, but in our last contest, we had to DQ someone for plagiarism, so - don’t do it!)

Remember, there’s all sorts of swag, including the PLvsPW artbook up for grabs, so take a swing at entering! (The spriting division is looking particularly lonely…)

It does - right now we're shooting for about 10 fanfic and 15 fanart. Sprites had a low turnout, so all 10-ish entries will advance.

Yeah, feels like the minimum of two OC's kinda "scared" people away. Understandable though.
