2015 has gone, and in its place Famitsu has put out their yearly sales numbers, which means we have sales numbers for Dai Gyakuten Saiban! Note that these numbers do not include digital estimates. Via NeoGAF:

Quote:
Famitsu Top 100, 2015 {2014.12.29 - 2015.12.27}

01. [3DS] Monster Hunter X # <ACT> (Capcom) {2015.11.28} (¥6.264) - 2.441.977
02. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team / White Dog Squad <ACT> (Level 5) {2015.07.11} (¥4.968) - 1.965.202
03. [3DS] Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2015.07.30} (¥4.320) - 1.282.880
04. [WIU] Splatoon <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 1.064.897
05. [3DS] Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King <RPG> (Square Enix) {2015.08.27} (¥6.458) - 864.865

[...]

31. [WIU] Mario Party 10 # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2015.03.12} (¥5.616) - 195.224
32. [PSV] Sword Art Online: Lost Song # <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2015.03.26} (¥6.664) - 192.047
33. [3DS] Great Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken # <ADV> (Capcom) {2015.07.09} (¥6.264) - 191.237
34. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate # <ACT> (Capcom) {2014.10.11} (¥6.264) - 189.057 / 2.570.234
35. [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam <RPG> (Nintendo) {2015.12.03} (¥5.076) - 174.674

For comparison, Dual Destinies sold ~353k copies in 2013 in Japan, and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright did ~232k copies in 2012 (just over a month on the market, in this case). In other words, DGS' sales haven't quite been up to snuff compared to the other 3DS games in the series, at least at retail. Still, hopefully the game's sales were strong enough for a sequel to be greenlit!

I sure hope it sold enough for a sequel, sure i might never get to play it myself but the japanese fans should at least get the whole story.

I'd take a localisation before I take a sequel.

Couldn't resist making this, still a bit disappointed that they didn't go through with localizing it.

I hope it gets a sequel. It'd be such a shame if Takumi's work just gets rejected after all these years. I'd take his writing over Yamazaki's any day TBH.

I remember Janet saying the reason they weren't localising DGS just yet was because of GS6 taking more priority, so I hope once that's done the team will translate the first DGS.

Oh, those sales surprise me. I wonder why it was so comparatively weak? Was the concept just too "out there"?

Yeah hopefully they'll eventually translate it. I mean just look at the first 3 games they did eventually get a English release it just took some time. So I'm holding on to hope that like the trilogy it will get a western release someday

That's really a shame... hopefully DGS2 & DGS3 will sell more.

It's likely due to how some fans responded at the end of the game. I saw this with AmazonJP ratings as well. To avoid spoilers, I'll just say that they didn't expect as many open plotholes as they did. It's likely because Takumi was planning for a sequel, since he couldn't fit everything he wanted in one game.

But based on my experiences with the game, it's absolutely stunning with so much mysteries and so much funnies.

Also, this may have played a role in why the localization was delayed. Perhaps Capcom US was also waiting for how the sequel would go before they jump on localizing one game - ya know, to avoid the situation with AAI again.

I still need to play my copy of the game, but not saying I'm too excited about it. Even the demo sorta underwhelmed me, and I wasn't too fond of the new things it showed me. But hey, maybe the game'll be better than the amazon ratings make it out to be, and I hope a sequel gets made and fixes up those problems in the first game.

I'm pretty sure she only said that to get the fans off her back.

MHX got number 1, and it was only out for 1 month?

I... uh, wow, I knew MH was popular, but didn't know it was that popular.

You should see the lines too. The past 3 releases always had something like this and major boosts on 3DS sales.

Pretty sure MHFU was the game release that actively slowed down Japans industry the week of its release.

Hells yeah MHunter! Here's hoping the differences don't put me off it, sounds like this next one does a fair few things differently.

oh wow, #33 for the year after having 6 months to penetrate the market
paper mario almost caught up and it'd been out for less than a month. That's pretty underwhelming. Hopefully capcom has the foresight to keep the DGS series going with the promise of stronger total sales since the negative reviews were mostly due to the ending. It's not a huge blockbuster hit, but i guess it's also not nearly as much of an investment to make one of these writing-heavy games vs something like monster hunter that has a shitton of content. Hopefully they didn't miss their projected numbers by an enormous margin :payne:

The demo was a bit wonky for me. I think I'm going to stick with MH4U for now, skip MH5 and wait for MH5U (which is hopefully still on Nintendo systems and whatnot)
