As leaked from the demo, Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice will indeed feature a DLC episode... and it features a familiar face or two to boot!

Image Image

Set after the end of Spirit of Justice, the episode sees Phoenix and Maya facing off against Edgeworth in court, with Larry appearing as well. The episode will be free to download from June 30th to July 20th, and will be a paid download afterwards.

Details will be discussed on tonight's livestream, though Famitsu's preview of the court skit they'll be using suggests "a wedding ceremony" and "time travel" will be the theme of the case.

OMG The old gang's back together again!
And Larry's got his berret, so is he still an artist!?

Considering it's basically a free download I guess it won't be on the same level as Turnabout Reclaimed, so I expect some hilarious shenanigans and a non-serious, non-canon story.

As mentioned above this is probably a throwback to old times, when Phoenix and Maya faced Edgeworth in court and had to struggle with idiotic witnesses like Larry and Oldbag. :P
This could mean we won't see Phoenix - Edgeworth interactions in the main story and the DLC is there to fix all the fanbase needs.

I'm not sure about the non-canon part. After all, it's 'set after the end of SoJ'. Why bother setting it in the timeline if it isn't canon?

The time-travel thing sounds weird, but that may be in the same sense that the theme of 5-2 were yokai.

For what it's worth, the PR makes it very clear the case will be full-length. As for time travel, this is Larry we're talking about here...

Based on the Famitsu screenshots, there's no way this is canon. Who drops game titles like nothing in court?

This raises the question... Who's getting married? Is it Nick and Maya? Was it supposed to be Larry, but then his fiancé ended up dying? Is it Edgeworth and Ema (Extremely unlikely, but I can dream)? Or is it someone completely unrelated?

In these screenshots...
Edgeworth says this someone who's getting married has appeared in both AA and AAI games.
Maya suggests there's a theme with time travel.
Phoenix suggests it's someone who has caused trouble during the Special Court skits (and TGS and promo events).
And then there was a certain someone who was chuckling and ready to show them something.

...I suddenly have a very bad feeling about this. Larry and Oldbag's return is no coincidence.

The second I saw wedding, along with the original trilogy gang all coming back for this trial, my mind flew to Gumshoe and Maggey finally tying the knot.

If the dialogue specifically says characters who were in both AA and AAI games, those two would certainly fit the bill.

That's awesome. I'd love if the special thing about this were Takumi returning to write for these old characters again but I know that won't be the case. Cool to see Larry and Oldbag though.

Hmm... that would make sense, yeah. Though no idea what that time travel thing is about, though.

Someone who's been in both AA and AAI, and has caused trouble in court skits at TGS, huh? That narrows it down to Edgeworth, Franziska, Ema, Larry, the Judge, Oldbag, and Gumshoe.

Edgeworth has the likelihood of getting married anytime soon as much as Apollo has to take a vow of silence; I have a hard time imagining Franzy or Ema either, so it's going to be one of the last three. My desired scenario is to see Gumshoe and Maggey finally tying the knot, but maybe Oldbag and the Judge are getting married...not to mention Oldbag certainly caused a great deal of trouble in that GS4 trailer...

Larry is always an option, although I feel like the announcement is "hiding" something that would be a bit of a downturn if it were Larry after all (humorous as it would be). His role in the one TGS skit he appeared in was pretty minor, too.

Actually, let's microanalyze everything they did in TGS:

* Edgeworth - Was too outdated in his knowledge of Nintendo systems to realize Maya's alibi was solid, deluded himself into thinking he was the protagonist of GS4, was too afraid to admit he was the protagonist of GK after that, temporarily hit amnesia and tried to show up as Bratworth as his own rival in GK2
* Franziska - Momentarily wanted GK to be about her because Edgeworth was too indecisive (minor role)
* Ema - Stole Gumshoe's lunch
* Larry - Was a momentary "witness" in the GK trailer (minor role)
* Judge - Was involved in the plot to convince Edgeworth he was the protagonist of GK; was complicit in the entire scheme to set up a rival audition for GK2
* Oldbag - Stole the GS4 plans and tried to prove that Edgeworth was the protagonist, then was complicit in the GK plan to convince Edgeworth that he was for that game
* Gumshoe - Lost his lunch (forming the trial at the AADS announcement), momentarily believed GK might be about him

Turnabout Reclaimed was originally released in Japan and English with the same stipulation of being temporarily free.

I like that this is at the end of the game. Turnabout Reclaimed happened in the middle of Dual Destinies and if you played it after the main game, it made one of the characters more unfortunate.

No, it never was free.
Price was €4.99 / $5.99 / £3.99 from day one.
The costume pack was free for two weeks, though. And in Japan the DLC case got 50% off of its price in the first weeks.

Okay, then yes, this could be a less sweeping case than Turnabout Reclaimed.

What does Larry's nameplate say? Is he using his pseudonym?

It's just an assumption anyway. Turnabout Reclaimed also sounded silly at first, but was a very compelling case.

He's wearing his artsy hat, so I assume he'll refer to himself as Laurice in some point during the trial.

He already did in the brief investigation portion they showed off.

Anyway, this upload of the special court skit will be subbed, while you can always rewind the full livestream as well.

Probably, since it's no imbued right snack dab in the middle of the story like Turnabout Reclaimed was. However, I wouldn't say it's any less canon.

All that Metal 4th wall talk seems to have been mainly for the skit trading the dlc, so I'm guessing the actual dlc itself is canon and not too meta, which is part the course for Ace Attorney skits.

Oh my, Phoenix and Maya vs Edgeworth, and larry as a witness, this is awesome, it's definitely a fan service case, I mean even the name "Turnabout Across Time" it could be interpreted as meaning they're going back to old times with this case, all I've ever wanted out of Ace Attorney, 10/10 would oldbag again.

Now that I've seen the livestream footage for myself, I feel so satisfied and reassured. This is entirely a fanservice case that doesn't take itself seriously, and I'm certain it's non-canon.

I'll just leave a summary here...
Spoiler:
To celebrate Maya's sudden return to Japanifornia, she and Nick are going out for "burgers" as usual. She invites Edgeworth, who at first insists on focusing on the trial, but to the judge's suggestion to "lighten up", he replies in a very "sure, if you insist" manner.

Anyway, Larry's not the one on trial, but naturally, he's been put into a suspicious light yet again. This time, it's Nick who calls him in to testify, and Edgeworth, being ever the buddy, tells him "Wright's the one who's made you into a suspect." Naturally, Larry then testifies and threatens to renounce all friendship ties with Nick. The judge, being tired of this crap, tells Mr. Wright to cross-examine Larry's threats, and Nick has no choice but to go through with it.

According to Larry, it seems the debut of "Franzy's Whiplash Splash" has gotten him attention and he's living the dream as a successful artist under the penname "Laurice Deauxnim". Where or how he got the money even though the book isn't readily available in stores is a real mystery.

It seems Athena's been taking care of Charley, and Phoenix realizes that he should take up the responsibility. He also mentions that it's been a while since he's touched that piano, but puts off practice yet again.

That isn't really too out there, though. I mean it's Larry, that's totally something he'll do. And it's probably not even the dumbest testimony Nick has cross-examined.

The weirdest part is that necklace that apparently either induces Final Destination-style flashforwards or Groundhog Day-style backtracks. Or was it all dream? That cutscene was confusing as heck. But then again it's probably the intro for the case, so I guess it's supposed to be.

I'm really looking forward to this, especially the whole wedding theme and getting the gang together.

But I can't help but feel envious, that a certain Story Half Attorney isn't getting his own share of it. Despite the game supposedly sharing the plot with Apollo he doesn't really get much. His own DLC case would've been nice.

Then again, there is the Pre-order mini cases, with him, Klavier and Jinxie in Khura'in, with double witness testimony ala VsLayton/DGS, but I don't even think we are getting that outside Japan.
