I just had an idea involving the Perceive system, which I feel is interesting and, on a bout of whimsy, wish to share.

I wonder about the possibilities presented if Apollo using perceive on a hypnotist who knows that he’s being scrutinized. To elaborate, this would be fun about this if the hypnotist starts to use false tells and other techniques to mess with Apollo’s Perceive, luring him into scrutinizing hypnotic ‘traps’. This could make the psychedelic effects even more disturbing, such as if other messages come out during the Perceive testimonies. It could even be used to manipulate Apollo and mess with his mind, turning the courtroom into a kind of ‘mental battle’ with Apollo’s sanity on the line as well as the defendant.

Example:

Quote:
Hypnotist Testimony: I saw him outside the bar. I’m certain that his hand reached into the glove compartment (rotates wrist slightly).

Apollo Perceives: I saw him LOOK AT ME (flash the crime scene). I’m certain that WAS HE THE KILLER? (Picture of the Bracelet appears in the man’s hand briefly) into the LOOK LOOK. (The hypnotist turns briefly into Phoenix Wright, in the same stance as the witness and making the same tell).

This happens during most of his testimonies you try to perceive, making it more difficult to locate tells and, more importantly, unnerving Apollo and possibly Trucy. As the trial goes on, the hypnotist might even plant triggers in Apollo, saying phrases during his time on the stand that cause Apollo to hallucinate/focus on certain things. These could be represented through minigames involving locating objects in warped or misleading backgrounds using the 'Perceive' eye.

Example:

Quote:
Hypnotist: “I guess it is something you might miss, Your Honor. Such an oversight is common, after all.”

(the word ‘oversight’ echoes, and Apollo is thrown into a hallucinatory episode where he finds himself at the discussed scene. There, he is overcome by an urge to locate clues in the room, and you have to find something and go through a strange scenario in order to proceed.)

It could even end, after the defense presents the final evidence to complete the man’s testimony, with the hypnotist responding simply with "Look at me." and instigating a hypnotic ‘mind battle’ minigame, although this is taking it a little too far. At this point, to could get very silly, unless it was set up that it was merely a woven trigger that sends Apollo into a massive psychological episode, and represents him fighting against it. Even then, people might think that is too much, although I wouldn’t mind.

The hypnotist doesn't even need to be the killer; he could be someone covering for the killer by inserting hypnotic 'red herrings' to throw off pursuit, or just trying to break Apollo's mind. Better still, the hypnotist is also looking for the real killer, and attempting to mess with Apollo to get him to reveal what he knows in-trial (especially effective if Apollo is holding back his findings for the time being, just in case).

This would make an interesting twist in a trial, and some humour value as well (such as Apollo going into flashbacks whenever someone says ‘oversight’: “S-STOP USING THAT WORD, YOUR HONOUR!”). Primarily, it would be dramatic use of hypnotic techniques, and would showcase an antagonist who can turnabout (as it were) Apollo’s greatest asset.

What do people think?

While on the whole, perceiving a hypnotist would be very interesting, I think that the "mind-game mini-games" would be taking it a shade too far. I would try to keep it within the context of courtroom setting, mind you.

The whole unnerving thing really is a cool idea, that a someone has a sophisticated defense against the Perceive System (hopefully not too sophisticated, don't wanna make the game too hard ;) ). The throwing Apollo off with misleading tics could make for a truly interesting case. Even better if the "right" tic was random each time, encouraging replayability, or at least keeping it interesting.

This type of case would certainly add alot of love to the Perceive system, I gather.

Yeah, I was actually hoping that
Spoiler: 4-4
Kristoph
would throw some false tells into his testimony. Needless to say, that didnt happen.

I think it would be cool if during a "percieve" segment, the witness would stutter (as signified by the slow beeping stopping slightly, then starting the word over) slightly on a word and you would have to percieve their mouth.

That would be awesome.

But I percieved (...OMFG LOL) the first example to be somewhat more like:

Quote:
Cross Examination: (collected, looking to the front) We were sitting at the farthest table. We could barely hear the bloke talking.

Percieve system: (smirking, looking towards the defense bench, Apollo's bracelet in wrist) We were sitting at the nearest table. (slowly raises an eyebrow) We could barely hear ourselves talking.

And then, in his final testimony, which apparently is very fitting and seems to have no flaw, you try to perceive again...

Quote:
Cross Examination: (a little nervous, looking to the side) The man, then, shot to the ceiling and told us we were hostages...

Percieve system: (sporting a very angry, almost crazy look on his face) I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, BOY. (breaks Apollo's bracelet, the swirls on the background start going really trippy and the music distorts and fades until silence is reached) TRUST ME, YOU'RE GOING TO REGRET EVEN TRYING.

Then, crazy shit happens, like seeing the Judge on the witness bench and Apollo being in the Judge's seat, then the Judge grows giant, eyes all red, while Apollo watches from a cliff as the Judge slams a giant gavel against him...

Apollo passes out, Trucy throws up.

That would be such the coolest twist. =) Capcom, you'd better be reading this.

Maybe,

Spoiler: 4-4
The witness would turn into some crazy, warped image of Kristoph. Y'know, just to freak him out.

Witness: So then the guy killed him!

And then Apollo tries to percieve it...

Yeah, that would be really cool. I get freaked out easily too, so I could just see playing this at 2am and being like "OMG" really loud, lol.

That would be epically awesome, it would probably become my favorite moment in a Phoenix Wright game ever.

If you really wanted to make it right, you could actually have it have such an effect on him that the real trial is put off, and Apollo get's knocked out and has to to do some trial in his head before he can get back to it, then whip the Hypnotist with his newly found mental fortitude!

A DREAM TRIAL!? That could be amazing if done right. Or awful if done wrong. But it's such an attractive idea... Maybe that could act as the equivalent of

Spoiler: 3-5 spoilers
Phoenix's accident that caused you to have to play as Edgeworth. Actually, it wouldn't even have to be a hypnotist. You could have Apollo get poisoned by the villain or something, causing him to enter a hallucinogenic state where he imagines a trial. Then you play as whomever has stepped into court in his place, trying to win the real trial. Every time a recess is called, you switch between trials.

I was thinking about how the Perceive System might develop to be used outside of court, and I thought that maybe the best way to implement this would be to somewhat invert the normal way of using it. Rather than perceiving on something the witness says, it would be more a question of Apollo running through various topics, then waiting for his bracelet to get a reaction on one of them. Then start perceiving.

BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT!!! *imagines it*

That actually sounds really awesome! It would totally throw me for a loop and give the Perceive system a better chance to shine. It may also show that just by saying "ZOMG YOUR FINGER TWITCHED!" it doesn't mean the witness will go , "OHMEGEE YOU'RE RIGHT, I'M SORRY!!! I'M THE KILLER!!!!!!!!111one"
And the whole dream trial thing sounds cool too.

That would totally make up for the sorta lame final "boss battle" with you-know-who at the end of 4-4. But if Capcom does take this, it would ruin the surprise!

That sounds interesting, if not a little complicated. I was just expecting the final Perceive to be like the one-shot Penalty in 2-4.

Spoiler: 2-4
When someone in the Nickel Samurai's costume is photographed walking into the corridor, you only get one chance to spot the contradiction because of a penalty that takes up the entire bar, and if you select the Nickel Samurai instead of his/her ankles, you lose.

By that, I mean you only get one chance to spot the right Perceive, and when you Perceive him, you see an easy to spot habit, which is a trick to make you follow another part of the sentence which will get you on the wrong side of a one-shot Penalty and lose, and a much harder to spot second habit, which is the right one and will continue the case.
Spoiler: Do a nice thing today,
Give your computer some love. <3

This, this is fantastic and I would have a heart attack if it happened. The dream trial is a great idea too. Someone email this thread to Capcom.

My idea for messing with the system is much tamer: have a witness with multiple "habits", each showing up on a different statement, but only one is the "right" one. Or just any sort of false tell. Heck, I subconsciously fiddle with my hair all the time, doesn't mean I'm lying.

I love this. Here's what I think happens:

:damon: (used for fun) I saw the victim at 2:00 AM two nights ago. He was with the defendant as they went into the apartment. Ten minutes later, the defendant left. No one else went up to the room that night.

:odoroki: (Percives) I never noticed the defendant in the complex until he left the victim's room. I d-didn't *mouth twitches* see anyone else go up into that room besides the other residents.

Selects mouth twitching. GOTCHA! *sound effects* Then all of a sudden:

:gant: No, you don't! *breaks percieve; sends Apollo into a mental state where everything is warped and not like it used to be.

Patient: Apollo Justice. Location: Hickfield Mental Ward. Status: Phisically fine. State: Between brief bouts on unconsiousness, the victim has almost no idea of where he is; what's going on, or what happened. NOT TO BE DISTURBED UNTIL RECOVERED.

:hobohodo: That was the beginning of what became one of the most bizarre cases in the area. As a lawyer again, I took over as the defense team and tried to proceed with the trial. I knew this guy did something to Apollo, and because of that, I've decided to try to use my Magatama in court. It was only when I used it did I realize my mistake.

:damon: I saw the victim at 2:00 AM two nights ago. He was with the defendant as they went into the apartment. Ten minutes later, the defendant left. No one else went up to the room that night.

:psycho-lock: :psycho-lock: :gant: :psycho-lock: :psycho-lock:
:psycho-lock:

:hobohodo: It's time to unlock the truth!

*presents Magatama*

Blah, blah. blah. blah...*after four locks break*

:hobohodo: You say that it was impossible for you to leave your post, but I have evidence proving you didn't! *Presents evidence*

:damon: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I'M. NOT. DONE. YET! *Camera goes back to Phoenix:

:psycho-lock: :psycho-lock: :psycho-lock: :psycho-lock: :psycho-lock: :psycho-lock:
:psycho-lock: :psycho-lock: :hobohodo: :psycho-lock: :psycho-lock: :psycho-lock:

*Maya appears at the witness stand; Mia at the Prosecution stand; Dahlia is the judge*

:gant: HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! PHOENIX WRIGHT! JUST LIKE YOUR APPERNTICE, YOU CANNOT PLAY MINDGAMES WITH ME!

Patient: Phoenix Wright. Location: Hickfield Mental Ward. Other facts: see file of Apollo Justice

:edgeworth: That was the worst month I ever had. I had to come back to my home country again at the expense of a sixteen-year-old who had only heard of me a few times. When I arrived, only did I then realize that I must become a defense attorney again. Up and coming attorney Apollo Justice and his mentor Phoenix Wright were striken with a serious case of what seemed like Alzheimers. Neither of them knew what happened. The only lead I have is the eyewitness report of the girl Trucy Enigmar...or as she goes by nowdays: Trucy Wright. :minuki:

I know this is a little wierd, and probably never will happen, but it's an idea none the less...

a mind warpy type Percive would just make the whole thing so much better 8D I like the Percieve system but as you guys have shown, it has so much more potential ^^

this is a little different but did anyone else feel tempted to replay the Phoenix Wright games to see if the witnesses had certain poses when making false testimonies?
