I was wondering the same thing. It would sure make "flashback" scenes and intros look much more professional if there was an option for effects.

Those types of effects will get included, just after I get all the basic stuff done. The only thing left, really, is to just finish up coding the rest of the cross examinations. Once that's done, then I can finally have some fun adding in stuff that really adds "pizazz" to the game.

All of this will come a bit later though, since I've been trying to port the case player to Windows, and it's really just been one setback after another.

I know next to nothing about programming, but what kind of issues are you having? Just for my own education.

Since I used the gcc compiler on Linux, I should have figured that using a different one on Windows would probably result in epic failure. The problem is that I used a handful of libraries that were originally for a Linux system, and having to manually port some of them over to Windows is causing migraines, and all kinds of mysterious errors that normally shouldn't come up. Right now I'm battling with Visual Studio and its friends, and if that goes to hell, I'll just have to think of a new approach.

I know you're all expecting some big, new updates, but sadly, I only can present to you this feeble one. I recently threw out those nasty, old fonts that the game actually uses, and replaced them with more flexible, TrueType ones. What difference does this make? Well, you'll be able to throw in your own, custom font colors, if you wish. Besides that, the player will load just slightly faster now that only one font is to be loaded.

Here is a screenshot of the newer fonts in action.

If you can't tell the difference, that's a good thing, but if you can, please flame me so I can tweak them more.

Trebuchet MS is much closer. And also, the spacing between the words is WAY too big.

Why don't you allow users to choose their own fonts and word spacings? That would make the users do the work! :karma: Although, chaos would ensure if someone chose a cursive font. Or Wingdings. :beef:

I'm actually trying to get everything up and running using the MinGW set with Dev-C++ nowadays, since it's the closest thing to my Linux's compiler on Windows. I'm assuming that no dark magic will interfere if the compiler is the same, so I might as well give said idea a shot, and so far, it's actually coming along surprisingly well. As far as .Net and friends are concerned, I'll put them on hold for now, unless something goes terribly wrong with my new venture.

Hmm, you're right; I'll have to take another swing at the font. I'm also not so sure about letting the user pick the word spacings, since I really have no idea what will happen if someone opted to have their words separated by 1000000000 pixels. It's always fun to find out, though. :) As far as custom fonts are concerned, I think that would be a neat feature to add.

Of course, there will be. I actually got the player working on Windows earlier today, so you can put that robe and wizard hat back on for now. ;)

Great idea! :evil laugh emote:

No, seriously. Having the option to choose font types could be useful for characterization (I can imagine Dahlia's font changing from a beautiful cursive into Chiller), for people who are into that sort of thing. If it's not your thing, then there'd always be the option not to, right?

Wingdings could be useful for, I dunno... Oldbag. You never know.

I was thinking about evidence and profiles and I have a question.

When evidence and/or profiles are added to/delete from the court record, does the message ("X has been added to the court record") come up automatically or does it have to be added manually?

I was imagining that in the dialogue for adding things to the court record, there would be a little option list something like this:
[ ] Display default message. ("X has been added to the court record")
[ ] Display custom message. ("Type message here")
[ ] Don't display message.

And you would check the option that you want (that way at the beginning of the game you wouldn't get useless "Attorney badge has been added to the court record" messages, and you can put in things like "Photograph slipped into pocket").
I just came up with that when I woke up at like 5am, so apologies. :yogi:

... wouldn't that be the same as 'Unknown'? As far as I understand, the gender check boxes only affect the beeping noise that happens when they talk. You put in their gender into the profile screen manually.

I say, thanks for making use of custom fonts. However, I prefer the font used in the Ace Attorney games. That way it looks more authentic. But custom fonts do make a nice feature. :)

And during cases, we'll be able to make it so in the court-record database, you can update the information on each evidence as you progress, correct?

This is how something like that works:

Quote:
{*add_evidence_animated:some_photo_id;*}
Photo slipped into pocket.

This means you can easily just throw in any message you want to be displayed when that little animation goes through, or you can just used the canned "X added to Court Record" message instead. Also, thanks for the UI suggestion; I think I'll make that dialog look like what you said. ;P

I'm trying to plan out a case to make once the editor's out, but in my case you don't play Phoenix (you play Maya). Can you put custom silhouettes on the forward button and in the background of the 'Talk' screen, or will it always be Phoenix?

Questions:

1) Trials longer than 3 days... possible or not?
2) Can attorneys, judge, proescutor, courtroom backgrounds etc be switched mid-case?

I'm steadily getting there. The only thing left before a basic beta release is to just wrap up cross examinations, which I doubt will take that long.

1) Yes, though I'm still debating that since I want to stay as close as possible to the actual games themselves.
2) Yes.

What'd be really nice would be if there was some kind of sprite-maker where you could make your own characters (Because I have many, many plots in mind that it would totally RULE to make but would require a sprite-maker thing).

Otherwise I'd totally use this XD

I agree, but I don't foresee that ever happening. You just have to be really talented at pixel art to make sprites, I suppose, or really good at Frankensteining. I don't think it's even possible to make a program that could specifically make Phoenix Wright-style sprites.

I'm in the same situation, though. So far I have 3 cases I want to make (possibly 4), but they all require new characters, or new sprites for existing characters (defence attorney Maya! Bellboy Phoenix!). Not to mention the evidence sprites...

Frankendolling... I've done it like, once. It's much more trouble than its worth, trust me.

I can't wait for the beta! I'm working on getting some bases for the characters, so it'll be easier to make sprites, but right now, I have... an arm. And that's it.

:gant: That's great!

Spriting is a lot harder than it looks, especially in the PW style. Close examination of sprites shows complexly coloured outlines, and arbitrarily placed coloured dots (making these uniform make the sprite look fake). I'm currently making a Fakir prosecutor sprite in my spare time... but it looks nothing like the PW sprites :yogi:

Well, I planned on making cases using "placeholder" sprites, and once I finished most everything asking around on the board for someone/some people with spriting talent to create the original characters.

Yes, every sound in the game, including the built-in stuff, is customizable. And yes, that means you can add your own background music, etc.
