definitely

I believe if i can get xlib to work how i want, then i'll only need one attorney seat which i can flip for prosecutor purposes and stuff. i'm still trying to see if xlib can do sprites which take up the whole screen...

Wait, how would transparency work?

for transparency for particular parts of sprites, I create a mask. it is the part of the screen on the sprite that will be transparent. I fill those parts with black pixels (essentially inverse of most sprites kinda) and using xlib i apply the mask to the image, which i believe that all it does is erase the section of the image that the white, empty part of the mask it, leaving whatever was covered in black pixels to remain. then the regular image is applied onto that, only putting on the black pixels. it makes a nice effect. I also think that, even if i can;t do "full sized" sprites, I can cut it up into sections of the sprites and edit them together... if needed.

I'll sometime try to make an actual demo of part of an actual game maybe, not a whole case, both for the small size and for you know, legal reasons. i'm not gunna take any potential sales from capcom.

anywho, if i were to do this, what part of what game should i make to demo it?

Made another speech bubble.

Image

Messed up on a few parts making it, but making this one was easier and faster.

EDIT: Made Hold It, the last one I haven't made (other then Eureka but there's a good explanation for that)

Image

All the three bubbles I made are just incase you needed them.

I screencapped the Eureka yesterday after midnight, got to finishing it today...

Rather poor ripping, but I finally got the Eureka bubble.

I think this covers all of the bubbles.

This is mine, resized to DS quality, did a little un-JPEGing. It's a little distorted, though, but I'm not finished editing.

update so that people don't think this is dead...

summer came, summer went... i didn't get a lot done due to several projects and other stuffs.

school is back which means that i'll get more work done on it. i do not, however, have a math class, which was my main source of free programming time.

i've finished/am nearly finished some of the newer sprites and am working on a possible cross examination engine. I have also tried implementing some special sprite layering techniques. which make the game look a bit better to a degree.

when i finish stuff i'll post as usual

Good News Everyone!

I've found a way to send direct images to the calculator from the PC.

this means that a sprite can be made on the computer, and it will work on the calculator.

so, If you want to assist me in making this game engine progress, you can create a sprite, upload it, and post it on this thread.

GUIDE FOR POSTING:
-make the sprite's dimensions exactly 96(w)x64(h) pixels small

-the sprite should be monochrome, straight black and white, no gray

-I would suggest ultimately saving the file as a monochromatic bitmap, but really, anything that doesn't change your file saving it will do

-KEEP THE SPRITE'S DIMENSIONS: Scale the sprite down exactly to it's relative position on the screen, scale the sprite so that its details are exactly in relative position to the calculator's screen size.

-FOR CHARACTER SPRITES: use the original character sprite's position on the screen, either on the bottom or slightly above for the attorneys. Do not include a background of any sort behind the character, but you can make a label next to them saying which character they are or something, just leave the sprite so that it doesn't touch anything else in the sprite's image

-ALL CHARACTER SPRITES AND NON-BACKGROUND SPRITES SHOULD HAVE A WHITE BACKGROUND

-dithering is encouraged if it looks good to emulate grayscale of some sort. if you can dither well, feel free

-stylization should be sparingly used to bring out details, such as missing hand outlines when the sprite is scaled.

that looks pretty awesome.

for ease of use, it would be best if the sprites were kept in the actual dimensions. they don't have to be individual, but resizing sometimes doesn't work for me.

anybody has the opportunity to help make sprites, and they will be included when possible

I should start working more on the cross examination engine...

Tried Franziska. Did several poses, court and front-view. I might try to do a Bratworth or Manfred (or some more poses for Franziska) later. You decide whether the hair looks better dithered or white.

I didn't do any blinking sprites, I think it would be hard to see on such a small scale anyways.

And I personally like the dithered hair on Franziska better.

More important than any sprite now for me is to make a programming outline of cross examination engine.

I think that there might not be a way to use the call method of writing the text any faster than it is now, as I don't know exactly why the calculator can't just read it how it should... so I might have to re-implement the previous display method for speed. (normally programming requires you to set timing, and to slow things down. this program needs all the speed it can get)

as for your guy's sprites, I have no way of knowing now if there will be enough space for multiple animations, since I don't see a way to animate the characters fast enough yet, as I do not know how to program with xlib exactly, or how to use assembly at all... but any sprites people make are gladly accepted, especially main standing poses and mouth movements

during a period of time when I had nothing else to do, I successfully plotted out and psudocoded how I would implement a cross examination engine. though it's not going to be fully automated, like the normal programming for the script, but it should still have an easy to understand layout.

I also designed the beginning of the court records system (which would be in another program, at least to begin with) which will be much faster than the regular engine and will eventually be very graphical

just so that people know, I am only working on this very sporadically at some little random chances I have. don't expect any major progress for a while, I just have so many other things besides this project. any submitted sprites, user-made content, and whatnot will still eventually be implemented, but production on this program is far from "active"
