Hmm, I tried the demo. I think it is a bit slow at printing, needs to be sped up. There are some things that can be done. Removing the mouth talking is one thing (it doesn't look that great anyway), which helps a lot. One problem with the mouth is it goes open and closed for each letter. I think it would make more sense to go open or closed for each letter. The other issue is recalling the entire pic just to fill the mouth in is pretty slow. So I put pixelson to make the mouth fill in on one frame, and the pixelsoff to take away the mouth on the other frame.

Finally, you added some for loops which slow things down even more. Not sure, but the length of those could be adjusted.

Here is my version:
http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=fdac ... b9a8902bda

Oh yeah, I added AxesOff to the top to make the grid go away. Since this is going to be run from another program, AxesOff should probably go there instead of here.

I just tried out this version, it's at least twice as fast as mine, do you think it was because of pixelon instead of recall pic that increased the speed so much? or was it the modifier for the speed that i had (they were purposely put in to try and slow down the animation) until i figure out a good speed for him to talk at, i'll keep it unchanged for now. (i nearly forgot about me slowing down the animation until just now)

because i forgot about me slowing down the animation, i could include extra animation, like finger waggle, head tilts, and other things perhaps

so yeah, just working on edgy and the court record now.

Yeah, that was mostly just me experimenting. Best to save optimization until later when all the elements are in and a good speed needs to be devised. I think even with the slowdowns pixelon is faster, but havent tested that.

But this is my reasoning:
loadpic -> asm loadpic function (really fast, say 0.1 somethings per pixel) -> loads 126x92 = 11592 asm pixelons -> 1159.2 somethings

pixelon -> basic pixels function, slow, say 1 somethings per pixel) -> draws/clears 100 pixels -> 100 somethings

So, drawing whole screen in pixelon would be MUCH slower than the loadpic, but drawing a certain amount of pixels is faster with pixelon than loadpic. But it's probably best to test it either way, when trying to actually decide what speed is wanted.

UPDATE: i got edgeworth's sprite finished. his neck skarf/tie/thingamabob is kinda hard to make out. right now it's him as if he was in a black suit, i'm not quite sure what parts i'll have blacked out just yet.

i'll put it up soon

also, i need suggestions on what to add to the court record:

profiles, evidence pictures, anything special?

I would do the record as a list instead of pictures. That makes it less snazzy but a lot more flexible. If you still want pictures, I think a variety of weapons (knife, gun, maybe a bullet), some dna type stuff (a fingerprint, a drop of blood, hair), and definitely at least one paperish evidence would be a good start.

You could support both types so it will please more people.

For evidence types, you could have (based a bit on saluk's ideas)

- Weapons (weapons by themselves and related stuff)
- Reports (autopsy reports, examination reports and related stuff)
- Photos (photos of the crime scene, etc)
- Texts (letters, notes, etc)
- Profiles (profiles about characters exactly)
- Personals (same as saluk's DNA)
- Others (items of relevance)

upper left it what it looks like on the calculator, and bottom left is his suit filled in with the magic of ms paint to paint it gray, it makes the details stand out a bit more, cause some details are hard to see with the original version

and i might leave it up to the users to make pictures for evidence, cause pictures could take up a bit of important memory that the game might use otherwise. i think it is possible to have picture searches (like in the actual game), cause you can register where the user's cursor is, and can decide if they are in the area that the correct location is in. when this engine is released, it will contain a demo of the various types of evidence. it will basically be a sample dish of all the features it can support

God, this is advancing greatly! Phoenix's sprites, those backgrounds and the Edgeworth sprite are simply perfect! It seriously looks like something CAPCOM would do!

i'm thinking that i might do over phoenix sprite just with erasing pixels for outlining his suit's features. I'll check to see if that looks any good, and then if it is, i'll apply the same technique for edgeworth

.... trying to show details isn't turning out as good as i hoped it would have... i guess i'll go with the same approach i did with phoenix and single color particular parts, leaving out major details. i'll make sure that his arm is definitely distinguishable from his body though...

you can try another one of the sprites if you want, but i'm not guaranteeing that it will be used

the dimensions need to be 96(L)x64(H), only black and white pixels

Sweet!
You could start with the judge, so you could even pull some small court talk.

here's a preview of what larry might look like, on the right, a low res correct dimensional shrinking of larry, on the right, the original sprite

i might work on the judge 1st though...

here's the judge

it was surprisingly easier than the others before it, perhaps due to my checkerdboard guide for doing it... or something. i also was able to pull off some extra details with pxloff, most likely due to the organized position of the judge, and how his details are pretty straight all around. i had some trouble with the eyes, it's hard for his brows, beard, eyes, and nose to fit on the same head. i can pull off a few expressions with the pixels available though, even a somewhat surprised expression.

he's a bit higher than the textbox, cause his sprite's relative position on the screen is there, and the scenery will be the only thing being interrupted by him and the textbox

Well, as you said, it would be better with a background, so changed that.
The first one, the height is the same, and I moved the background up,
the second & third, I brought down the judge instead.
how is it?

i am very impressed on gumshoe, i'll try to put that into the game after i finish larry, i'm still saying to have a more "picture perfect" versions of the background...
Image
is a bit different looking than this:
Image
because of the background

it's an awesome sprited background, but i' looking for as close as possible to in game sprites with this project, which your gumshoe certainly is!

(i'm thinking up names for the game... and finishing larry)

EDIT: i added a new section on the first post at the top called Progress, this gets updated as i'm working on stuff, to keep the most up to date with everything. even the little stuff is written down

the title of the thread is updated by important events in the program's progression, like finished sprites, or demos or something

hey! no arguing around here...

1. RandomJibberish is right, Dithering has existed since the dawn of pixelart and is a commonly used practice
2. ksunwoo6 has used the technique frequently and very well in all of his examples of his calculator pictures, but you can still not claim a well known technique as your own
3. i have tried Dithering well before in ti83 calculator pictures many times before including sprites for this project, yet i have not done very well with it. i tried it once with my phoenix sprite and the results were far from satisfactory. ksunwoo6 is much better at the technique than i am, and i expect that all of his sprites will be of high quality and much detail due to frequent use of dithering.

if i do go back, i might try dithering again for some sprites to see if i can make it look any good, but this program has priorities.

feel free to make any sprites of your own (or even remake some i already did better) and post them here, if they rock and are pretty exact to what the game looks like, then i can remake them on the calculator (probably an new ones will not be put into the first pack, can't have too many pictures); and if they are improvements to ones i already have, then i will improve the sprites i already have.

credit is for the personal work posted for this project. if used, they will be correctly credited

Well dithering the beta Edgy looks much better than the final one you have now. In fact, so does just using the beta sprite - in the final the black is really ugly. (I missed seeing it before)

I told you I didn't do dithering that well...

so let's take a vote on the one to be in:
Image
dithered
Image
filled
Image
(upper left) empty

which one of mine is the best out of filled, dithered, or empty?

of course others can make their own, better version of Edgeworth if they want to submit it
