Wow, only just realised how short the screen is.

It might or might not look better if you erase the topleftmost pixel of his mouth.

(It's far too late now but I was going to suggest using his thumbs-up pose, no big deal)

I made a little background for phoenix, i mostly did it straight from the sprite, but i used ksunwoo6 sprite for a bit of reference on the shading. i was stuck trying to think on whether i should crop off some of the background sprite on the bottom (where the text box it), or to move the background up and crop off the top (so it would match up with phoenix's sprite) i chose neither and instead squished the background vertically. it looks better than it sounds (i'll post it up soon)

ill still will need decide on keeping phoenix's sprite clearly separated from the background (aka ksunwoo6's mockup) or to just have it touch his sprite

i also made a little wiki entry and temporarily called this project "The Phoenix Sprite Case Maker""The Calculator Case Maker":

By that logic, you've just called nearly every Phoenix Wright character's mother senile.
Just ask Harry Butz :larry: , Winced in Pain :payne: , and Beef Wellington :wellington: . What were their mothers on?

not too horrible dithering FTW!

so this is about close enough to an actual screenshot of the game...

It... doesn't look too good to me. It might be the squeezedness or the ditheriness, but the background seems too distracting.

i don't think it's the squeeze-ness, the background was pretty long to begin with but i think that the dithering is much more distracting than the somewhat shortened background.

please note that only phoenix, edgeworth, the judge, larry, and the objection sprite will be in the first release.

once those sprites are completed, i will only work on the coding from then on.

on the coding aspect, i'll have to make every character talk and have the text move at the best pace possible. then i'll release a demo pack which allows you to make any character say whatever you want just like the phoenix talk test.

then i'll work on making the script work easily, having the code to change the sprite, animation code, and the current script.

i'll work on adding someway to put special actions into the script for OBJECTIONS and future events like decision making.

that'll finish up the first release, and i'll make sure to put in tutorials for easy editing of the script and sprites

after that is done, i'll make any requested sprites, with a priority on more basic sprites, like gumshoe or right outside the courtroom, instead of something like the helper's side of the bench, or a custom character.

so from now on, feel free to make suggestions about the current work, and make your own sprites/scripts ready for release in the meantime

i mean actually make the sprite on the calculator.

the game can only use calculator pictures/sprites

the only animation i plan is mouth movement really, and all i need to get down is the rate of talking, which really wouldn't be that hard for me to put in the game

flowchart of the programming (in pseudocode of course):
Image

notes:
*the amount of characters being displayed while the string is going through is undetermined, i just put 2 there for now
*the progression variable gets increased by 1 each time the script progression section starts
*where it says "Animate [character]'s mouth" it means that the whole character will be animated talking while the text is being written

i diddn't ditch it, i just need to make sure that my priorities are straight. basic sprites first, programming second. then i release the first release. THEN i work on any other sprites.

i can't think of anything wrong...

but this:

follows every line of text in the actual game
the closest thing to it in the calculator is
>

it's really no problem to put into the game... i could make it go back and forth or blink if it'd be better... or if necessary, i could make a custom sprite that looks exactly like Image but i thought > would suffice enough.

i just think that text in a phoenix wright game is naked without it's little "keep talking" button, it's even prominently displayed on the bottom screen on the ds, but HUGE

Eh, a > would probably not look very good, unless it moved back and forth. Or you could have an arrow image, in which case moving back and forth wouldn't be so necessary.

i can even do both, an arrow that moved back and forth, the programming isn't hard at all and the effect produced looks pretty good.

trust me, it'll work

instead of how i had it before, i'll now have the arrow move back and forth in the bottom right corner of the screen whenever the text is paused. now i just have to slow down the speed the arrow moves at...

EDIT: animating the arrow works, but trying to get it to recognize button presses while it's animating is kinda tricky... cause the way i have it right now, it can only recognize the button press if you do it right between the time it moves positions, making it seem kinda unresponsive. it should be fixable, but right now i don't know if there's an easier way

i've been working on teh engine and made changed the previous demo so that it can use the 4 character spites to say any phrase, and display the objection sprite.

i added mouth animation to phoenix edgeworth and the judge so far...

i'm close to finishing the background for edgeworth

i noticed that on repeated plays, my program slows down, meaning i have an unclosed if loop somewhere probably, i'd need to take a closer look to fix it

i made the text display twice as fast as the mouth, making it look WAAAAY more smoother, but i may still make it faster, once i figure the timing out for everything

i'm still having problems with the animating arrow, but i can work it out... hopefully

i still need to make the backgrounds for the judge and larry too

.tig is the file format for backups of the ti83/84

on my computer, it allows me to open and browse through the file and choose whatever files i want, or just say restore in ti-connect and it will let it go to the calculator, i guess some people's computers don't like opening the tig file as a normal folder, so i'll try working on re-uploading just the files in a standard folder.
