Turnabout Beginnings: The Prosecution's Side

This is a one-off fangame I decided to make, after trying out Ace Attorney Online. Therefore, obviously, that is the casemaker used.

As the title suggests, this is case 3-4. However, with many differences. The big one being, of course, that you play as Miles Edgeworth, the prosecution. I finally decided to go through with the idea after playing through ShadowEdgeworth's ME:AA Turnabout Rookie (which is most awesome, by the way, congrats), although I had been planning something of the sort for quite some time. However, the style of gameplay is somewhat different. It goes without saying that this case contains major spoilers for 3-4. It also contains spoilers for GK-4 and GK in general.

So far, the first half of the case is complete, that is to say, up to the recess. I'm going to be starting the second half shortly. It's far from perfect, but it's still by all means playable and understandable. It makes no difference whether you have played 3-4 before or not. That is of course if you don't mind the spoilers. Rather than detail how to play here, the game contains small "tutorials." So just go for it, and have fun. Feedback is much appreciated, as is criticism, providing it is constructive. Please remember that it is far from complete, though.

I'll tidy this topic up later, and add some screenshots and other information and what have you. The purpose of making this case was to test the casemaker, and to prepare for an original fangame I have in mind, which I will begin in the near future. More on that when the time comes.

Played through it and while I thought it would be boring just playing a recap of a trial but on another side, it was surprisingly interesting. I look forward to Part 2.

You're very welcome. And thank you. Looking forward to playing the rest of yours, too. ^.^

Wow, "The Prosecution's Side" of existing cases. I love the idea! I'll get to play it when Glee finishes XD

I think this idea works very well with existing cases - it's easier to be up to speed and present the prosecution's case when you actually know what the case is that you're supposed to present, while it's easier for the defense to flail about when you play a new case and the player is unfamiliar with the facts.

I didn't play very much (only through the first testimony), but a few quick things:
1. The writing is very good for the original parts! I like the depiction of Gumshoe and Edgeworth in this game better than I did in the demo of AAI.
2. Some profiles and evidence that weren't supposed to appear this early on (e.g. Dahlia, jewel) appeared while the game was loading. Since that can be a significant amount of time on AAO, if you actually care (and I wouldn't blame you if you didn't, since it's not a spoiler for any players), you might want to hide those.
3. I like the idea of including the defense in the cross-exam. I definitely considered doing a whole prosecution fangame based on cross-exams exclusively of the defense counsel's wacky theories, but I think mixing the defense's lines in with the witnesses' makes for a more interesting experience. It was a little overwhelming, though, to have so many lines in one cross. There are the obvious "filter it" lines like "Oh, I see," and Edgeworth really helps the player out with his own thoughts, but I'd imagine that could get really difficult in more complicated trials.

Hopefully, I'll play through more later. I was playing a bit seriously this time, but next time I'm going to intentionally be a moron to see some of the early "you fail, that's not the right witness" messages :edgy:

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your feedback. ^.^ Yeah, I thought this was a good way to try out the casemaker while also making for an interesting case and new way to play. I think it works rather well.

1. Thank you so much! I tried my best to keep character throughout. I'm so glad you like it.
2. Yeah, I added those because I originally intended to make the entire case as the one trial. I changed my mind after about 1200 lines. So yeah, I'll get around to removing those.
3. Indeed, I know it can get a bit complicated, hence the small 10% penalties. But I do have ideas as to how to mix it up a bit later on.

I'm sure you'll enjoy a lot of the screw up moments. There's a game over sequence too, something you see very rarely in AAO cases. Every possible choice and outcome is accounted for. Again, thanks for trying it. ^.^

WOW! Pretty good case! I like the changes you made, like the AAI soundtrack. (But having Phoenix Wright Objection is a little bit unsuiting. ry the Apollo Justice objection theme instead. ^^) Maybe I should patent that Prosecuting system... lol.

I did take a lot of penalties, though. Thankfully, you made them small. :edgy:

Don't forget to make a thread on the AAO forums. You have a very good chance of making this a featured trial!

Thanks for the feedback. ^.^ Yup, I had to use the AAI soundtrack, it's just so awesome. But I used the original objection theme and original announce the truth for Mia's points because a) the originals are the best of the lot, and b) it fits with having different music for both sides. Indeed, you will notice that I borrowed small parts of a couple of your ideas. Consider it a compliment. =P I hope you don't mind. ^.^;

Yup, small penalties. Bigger ones in Part 2 and at other moments, though. I can't have it be too easy.

I will indeed make a thread at the AAO forums, but not until Part 2 is complete. Getting it featured would be super epic. Thanks again!

Also, update: Part 1 has had the unused evidence removed and has had a few other fixes. Part 2 is progressing nicely. It's about 20% done.

EDIT: Now 2/3 done, whoo!

The game was grrreat! There were some issues like how when Edgeworth was supposed to get a penalty, he didn't! :keiko:

There's also how it's typed penalised, the correct wording is penalized. Those are all the issues I found!

*keep waiting for the witness to recover* :meekins:

Thanks muchly! Glad you enjoyed it. ^_^

I was lenient in some places, so he actually wasn't meant to get penalised, unless the life bar was flashing while making the decision.
As for the spelling, I decided to spell words like "penalised" and "colour" the British way, with me being, well, British. I felt like I could get away with that without taking away from the feeling of it being an Ace Attorney game (which is the reason why I left "Your Honor" the American way).

Update: Part 2 75% done!

Part 2 is up, case complete! Now I just need to make some minor changes and do some fine-tuning throughout both of the parts, as well as add an introduction and an outro. Will post an update when that's done. Regardless, I hope you enjoy. See first post for links.

EDIT: I have just implemented a password system where you enter the password given at the end of Part 1 into the beginning of Part 2 to be able to continue. If you finished part 1 earlier, and need the password, PM me. Obviously I won't be any the wiser if you have not in fact finished the first part, but then you'd only be cheating yourself. =P Alternatively, view the source of the page. >_>

Very nice. I particularly enjoyed the part where you cross-examined the witness as a prosecutor. You had to avoid those contradictions so I was very careful (though I ended up with one large penalty.). In conclusion, a brilliant trial. You have shown how AAO can be used to create such wonderful cases. Great job.

I forgot to mention that you should make a walkthrough. Some parts of the second trial are kinda hard, specially with as much pressure as the penalties that the judge offers. :udgy:

Hiya :pearl:
I'm new to Court Records, so I hope I can make awesome games like you one day .
I've been playing your amazing game called Turnabout Begginings, and I'm honestly stuck on Melissa's testimony. I tried to find the walkthrough, but I can't find it. Could you please give me a link? Thank you.
