(NOTE: Development of chapter two will be a little slow, as I'll be taking a break to help SilentBobX with his excellent series Trials after Justice, programmed in PyWright. Expect chapter two in a few months, at the earliest.)

All the Brooks and Soldiers

Suppose the lions all get up and go,
And all the brooks and soldiers run away...

     - W. H. Auden

Link to Chapter One

(I recommended that you play in Firefox for the best experience. The case works in Chrome, but visual effects are glitchy.)

Introduction:

There was no muttering in the gallery this time. The trial was to be conducted in absolute secrecy, for its outcome bore grave and far-reaching implications. The defendant, police officer-in-training Ema Skye, stood accused of the murder of Dr. Johann Palmstroem.

The defendant's sister, Lana Skye, sought the best defense attorney she knew. Unfortunately, he had recently been disbarred, and he, Kristoph Gavin, and Miles Edgeworth were all testifying before the legal board to contest the harsh ruling. With only rookies and incompetents to choose from, she was nearly out of hope...

... until the last person imaginable took the case.

Spoiler: Cast
Cast:

Defense: Klavier Gavin
Image
"I could never refuse the pleas of a maiden in distress."

Fresh from his defeat of Phoenix Wright, the new Prosecutor intends to take on the case. Armed with only his brother's badge, the Sister Iris precedent, and tremendous nerve, he'll bring the truth to light... or die in the attempt.

-

Defendant: Ema Skye
Image
"But what about the Law of Conservation of Mouse?!"

Intent on becoming a forensics specialist, Ema Skye enrolled at the Police Academy not long ago. But a routine security assignment at Palmstroem's lab has landed her in deep trouble. She still can't explain how her gun came to be the murder weapon.

-

Victim: Johann Palmstroem
Image
"It takes all the running you can do just to stay in one place."

Dr. Palmstroem's work was vital to national security, but what was it? A locked safe, twin mice, and an encrypted laptop hold the key.

-

Prosecutor: Franziska von Karma
Image
"If you address me as fraulein one more time, Mr. Gavin...
I shall beat you senseless with your own guitar.
Ja?"

Older and wiser now, Prosecutor von Karma is trying, at the request of another, to take a less violent, more understanding approach to life. However, the man who robbed her of a rematch with Wright will test her patience to the very limit.

-

Researcher: Dr. Vincent Omnia
Image
"My alibi?
I was visiting my brother in prison...
in Texas.

Elegant and soft-spoken, Dr. Omnia was the victim's co-researcher and shared patent credit with him on all his projects. Having just flown back from an out-of-state trip, he stands ready to offer his expertise to the court.

-

Condemned criminal: Dr. Henry Omnia
Image
"I've heard it's mostly painless..."

Vincent's brother, convicted for murder, currently waits on Death Row in Texas. Does he blame Franziska von Karma for what happened to him?

-

Detective: Dick Gumshoe
Image
"They've got great stuff here, pal! Look at that laser cutter!
Do you how many badges I could make with this?"

A man of little presumption and even less common sense, Dick Gumshoe was probably the worst possible choice to investigate a matter of international importance. But his skill as a tinkerer may prove more useful than expected.

-

Private investigator: Lana Skye
Image
"Well then, Prosecutor Gavin.
Prove me wrong about you."

Since getting out of prison, Lana has become a well-known private detective. Though she's barred from the crime scene, she'll do her best to help Klavier prove her sister's innocence.

-

Veteran attorney: Kristoph Gavin
Image
"I wish I could be there. But I trust you'll manage."

Never more than a phone call away, Klavier's protective brother will provide him with sharp insights - if he can swallow his pride enough to ask for help.

I was going to play this, but then I looked at the Cast section and immediately had an adverse reaction to potential Klema. (Just kidding, I played it anyway)

Spoiler: Random thoughts while I was playing
Intro is nice. Like something out of a Carl Sagan work.

*background obviously ripped from Trauma Center*
“Saturn Technologies HQ (formerly Hope Hospital)”
I giggled.

“Emergency Snack Reserve Compartment”
Oh, Ema, you never change.

And now we know the origin of Ema’s Snackoo addiction!
...Actually, thinking about it, it’s kinda creepy that she picked it up from a guy she ended up going on trial for murdering. I don't know about you, but the association would really put me off those things.

I presume it's not your fault, but the "use item on world" interface is really annoying to use. I probably missed half a dozen funny comments because of it.

LAYTOOOOON!
Fourth riddle was maybe too easy :will: (especially compared to the third and fifth ones, for which I needed the hint)

Should’ve gone with the public defender indeed. I still can’t believe I’m playing the glimmerous fop.

Ema sure is good with a crowbar, breaking the door open in one blow. Was her dad a theoretical physicist at MIT, or does she just work out more than looks suggest?

Why did Franziska ask for Klavier to play defense?

Ooh, cliffhanger! What's Vincent working on, an Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device?

Spoiler: Bug I noticed
When searching the Machining Room for something to breach Johann's office door with, if you examine the blinds or box (maybe anything unrelated) Ema's monologue has the male dialogue voice.

Definitely looking forward to next chapter.

(Also, Ferdie! Haven't seen you in forever! Where you been?)

Thanks for the comments! I've had IRL things to deal with/work through, but I'm back.

Spoiler: Question
What was awkward about the inventory system? I'd like to streamline things as much as possible in the next part.

Actually, trying it again, it's actually not that bad. I guess I was just in an impatient mood then.
For reference, though, I'll post my feedback/suggestions anyway:
Spoiler:
Too slow to use IMO.
  • Click Present
  • Click on evidence
  • Click Present
  • Click to skip through text
  • Click on location
Five clicks!

Some things that would make it less cumbersome, although I suspect most of these require considerable changes to AAO:
  • Remove Step 4 (or does turning off tutorials already do that?) Would probably leave newbies confused though. Maybe just make the text appear instantly.
  • Hotkey for Present
  • "Use" button for evidence, so you can present-to-world directly from the Court Record
  • Or alternatively: drag-and-drop interface

Thanks for the feedback! Most of those possibilities are things I can't implement, but I did change the text to instant display!
