Hey all, I've decided to come by and share what I've pulled from the ROM so far, since it's been a few days since I responded to a PM from Croik. First, the download link:

http://files.filefront.com/gk+1stbatchzip/;13874195;/fileinfo.html
(14.6 MB .zip containing 1,635 .gif files)

Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to rip large character sprites. I know these are what people would like to see most, so I'll get on that as soon as I can. For now, this is what I do have:
    - backgrounds
    - foreground objects
    - full screen images
    - evidence/profile icons
    - mini character sprites (looks like you beat me to this, Odrom :phoenix:)

Aside from the large character animations, this covers everything except for UI graphics and text (evidence descriptions and the like are often stored directly as images). I don't plan on ripping those last two, since the UI stuff is kinda messy and I don't see much demand for images of Japanese text. I also found what appears to be hardness data for the scenes you can walk around in (essentially a monochrome bitmap denoting which pixels are "walkable" and which ones aren't). I can share this too, if anyone thinks they would actually have a use for it.

Let me know if you see anything that didn't get ripped correctly; I had to assign a fair number of palettes to images by hand, and I have doubts about some of them (specifically the cloudy/hazy-looking backgrounds, since I have no idea how those are supposed to look). There are also a couple sprites that will have issues because (it appears) different parts of them were supposed to use different palettes.

Also, to answer a few questions that came up in this thread:

Odrom wrote:
The problem with this case is the palette. If anyone with more knowledge of rom hackan than me can assist in finding the data on the internal palette we could speed up this entire process and do one mass rip for all the mini spirtes.

You mentioned you were using Tile Molester to locate the mini sprites. You may have also noticed a thin line of noise between the sprite set for each character. That's a palette :phoenix:. You can use them within Tile Molester by going to Palette->Import From->This File and entering the offset (in decimal) and size (16) of the palette.

Odrom wrote:
For the life of me I can’t find Payne! Even minor cameo characters like Ema have at least a row of sprites. Are there any more poses or animations that Payne does? It’s quite possible that they integrated him into the background instead of giving him his own sprite, that or he’s jammed next to someone else’s set and I’m looking over it. Poor Payne.

Close! Payne is actually stored along with other foreground objects, like furniture. Ouch. In any case, foreground objects are compressed, which explain why you didn't see him. For the record, he's in 1290.gif in the .zip above.

Odrom wrote:
I’m really curious. Specifically: What compression algorithm (does it use LZSS like GBA roms?) and display codec (What BPP setting?) is used.

In GS4 they used LZ77 (like the GBA games) and RLE, whereas in GK they use a modified form of LZ77 that seems to eliminate the need for using a separate algorithm for RLE. Bitmap formats vary depending on the type of data being represented; backgrounds are 8-bit, tiled, and compressed, whereas mini sprites are 4-bit, linear, and uncompressed.

The solution … so simple, yet I didn’t see it, arghhhhh :zenitora: . Well this eliminates the need for reference shots, as I can get at them pretty easy now. All of the (properly) colored minisprites are in invertigo’s download pack already. Although I suppose I’ll finish up what I’ve been doing and have all of the sprites separated into a sheet format ready for download.

I had a feeling it was some family of LZ compression, well, this lets me tinker around a bit more. Thank for the info. I’m just an amateur rom hacker.

It's also like the one Alice Cooper has (really it's more like the whip a jockey uses vs. her lion tamer style one).

Using the help from Invertigo I went ahead and finished coloring & ripping most of the minisprites. I cleaned up some of my older posts so the animation frames are in proper order. While all of the sprites can be found in Invertigo’s pack, here they’re combined into a sheet format for easier viewing.

Download Link
This has all the characters listed in the C-R character page except for the following:
Masumi Ogura, Deed Man, these two are probably somewhere in the foreground/background files, haven’t found them myself though. Akbey Hicks, Kurou Ichijou and Tooru Makari can be seen in pic 1416 and 1876 of Invertigo’s fileset. If you guys need anything else let me know.

Thanks for all your help Odrom! These are great. I'm gonna try to get them up today. :edgy:

Don't worry about Ogura and Deed - I already found Ogura in the bakcground images, and Deed doesn't have a little sprite.

Anyone wanna help animate these little guys? :shoe:

I'll help in animating the mini-sprites!

The only real problem is the timing. They might not be perfect at first, so I'll work on the non-running ones first, so then I'll get better then work on those running sprites!

Quick question: Do the running sprites have to cover the entire area or can they just run in place?

Probably a better idea to have them run in place. The small dot you see in the upper left of each row indicates the start point of each animation. Most sequences only run for one row but there are a few exceptions, Franzy’s curtsey being one of them. On some of the rows I captured the sequence with the starting frame not being the first, but in a looping animation it shouldn’t matter. It should be obvious where one animation ends and another begins, although some of Gumshoe’s and Kay’s can be a little confusing without seeing it in-game.

So, are you saying I should play the game before doing this? One thing I can do is animate them in a certain time to my liking. If it isn't accurate, just let me know and suggest if it should be slower or faster.

All this animating work is really fun :gant:

My question is, where are all the big sprites???

I already basically finished Portsman, same with Edgy, and finishing up on Gumshoe.

Bring me Rou!!!

Only if you’re a stickler for perfection :karma:, you can probably get the timing right by hand anyway.
As for the big sprites, I’m still messing around with the rom file, were going to have to wait for Invertigo to deliver the goods.

If you're not sure how a certain little animation is supposed to look, just stick with the basic walking and running animations. Since they loop I think a generic .01 seconds for each frame is good (I did that for one of the walking Edgies and he looked fine). Once I finish my case 5 writeup today all my attention will be on the sprites, so I'll start work on them too.

I decided to animate the Edgey Objectin' and shrugging. It also has pointing a and b. There is a tiny problem with the shrug but I'll fix it later.

Sweet! You got the sprites I wasn't able to animate! (My ImageReady hates me) All that's left is the finger wag sprite, then all the non-spoiler sheet sprites will be animated (I've been procrastinating on uploading those, I'll get to it soon!)

The curve in his extended finger makes the pose look slightly gay flimsy for some reason. It could just be all the pointing Edgeworths side by side, though.

Yeah, I don't think it was the best idea to do that... no offense, of course :will:

What I've been doing is putting all of the sprite as close to the edge as possible, but you can see the entire sprite. That way when people do games or videos (like me when I do my abridged series!) You'd be able to move the sprite to make it fit in the game like that.

Also, there's that little white pixel in one of the frames, and it's just bugging the crap out of me :meekins:

I figured out what type of outfit young :franny: appears to be wearing. It looks like a horse rider club outfit (idk the proper term).
For evidence i present her compared to Sarah from the Horseland cartoon:

Hey guys. Thanks for all the great work so far. This game is seriously looking amazing~

Got a little bored the other night and decided to do some animation with the minisprites. Hope no one minds. The animation and timing may be a little off, I'm a bit of an amateur at this.

Spoiler: Animations

Spoiler: tiny sprite discussion
Haha, for some reason, when I saw cross-legged tea-drinking Edgey in the tiny sprite sheet, the phrase "once they turn blue, you don't have to feel them" crossed through my mind.

But seeing the animation all together... that is one adorable sprite. Though I'd probably slow down the sipping rate a little. :edgy:
