Yeah, the same thing shot through my mind when I first saw her name.
Hmm... I see no harm in Edgey having an assistant. Kay seems unlikely but perhaps he feels responsible for her and has sympathy for her. I dunno. Those seem like very plausible theories that won't land her in jail.

Kay's tied with Maya for best assistant, IMO. For starters she's a pretty smart girl most of the time (she's at least capable of keeping up with Edgeworth's logic and she's definitely smarter than Gumshoe, though that's not saying much), plus pretty much everybody likes her and her little sidestory in Case 4 was probably the sweetest thing in the AA series.
And of course to top it off she's super cute.
