You've got somewhat the gist of it. You see, it was illegal to read books, and all the books that were legally left were action books (comics), porno, and TVs that literally engulfed walls.
I think it was a little cynical, but you also have to take into account the person who wrote it, and at the time it was written. People, believe it or not, feared technology more than the relatively few who do now.

I was in need of it, but I transfered to the AP class shortly after to a teacher who is was an uptight idiot with an irrational prejudice against men. Really. She hated all of us. The opposite of a history teacher I once had. If you were a girl in his class, you were an automatic B. If you were pretty and dressed scantly-clad, you got an A.
I remember I made a great video that had both great historical content, and humor, written by me and a friend of mine, and we got an 18/30. You know what got a full score?
Two girls holding cardboard cut surfaces with tin foil taped on, and all they do is walk on, make cheap firing noises, and walk off, fade out. Fade in, and the same happens.
HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN!?!?!?
