Hello, curious people who have stopped by! Rubia Ryu here for your pointless but interesting trivia on things that do with this game called Gyakuten Saiban or Ace Attorney, but not in-between. :D By that, I mean my currently-under-a-hiatus-curse-that-keeps-coming-back localization / translation comparison project I had left dejected in a thread somewhere on this site.

I just started up a new blog, and I'm kinda desperate for attention, so stop by to ask me stuff. I honestly don't care what you say, and if it's worth it, I'll try to reply as soon as I can. Do note that I will make frequent distinctions between Japanese and English character names because they stand for COMPLETELY DIFFERENT characters that just look and act the same. I take no responsibility for any confusion I may cause, even though I probably should (and will anyway because I'm sorry).

For those of you clueless as to who I am or what I'm doing, I can only say, I'm sorry for not making myself more known. I've only been an active poster on these forums since June 2012, so I'm relatively new to the community compared to some long-time members. If you check out the Gyakuten Saiban In English thread, you can see it is NOT an original idea of mine, but I've taken up the role anyway since I felt bad for that thread. (Then, I leave it alone for months and say I'm still watching it. Oh, the hypocrisy, it hurts...) More info on my project is in the link above.

I'm also here to ask you guys how you want me to present my analytic works, by which I mean my attempting-to-be-witty comments about localization changes. Should I post in blocks, following each case of each game? Or should I first just answer questions people have about certain things?

Also, I am open to share my knowledge from my Japanese language studies. Take it from me when I wish there was a blog that featured AA characters teaching Japanese. This blog will be for the curious and the speculative.

Lastly, what do I do with that dejected thread? I guess I can update it too on the side after I update my blog or something. It's good to spread out domains.

So... yeah. C ya lat'r.

Edit: Almost forgot to mention; anyone who has questions, comments, or complaints for me or my blog can pm me or post in this thread, whichever you feel is more appropriate.

It's still the same blog and you can access all the project-relevant posts; I've just expanded to include the Yakuza / Ryu ga Gotoku series. Perhaps I'll dive into the localization of those games as well eventually...

Personally, I'd prefer a systemized way of posting (questions are probably handled better in seperate Q&A posts, I think...). Case-by-case (chapter-by-chapter) would be good, but you might wanna consider completely different categories. Maybe focus on 'types' of text or localisation practices? (i.e. speech pattern types a la Kansai dialect, to give an obvious example from me, but there are probably a lot of other categories for you to consider. Maybe jokes that are translated in a similar fashion, or something like that).

I admit I did feel tempted to pull an April Fools, but I think Bolt made enough people cry, myself included. XP

Yep, that's the biggest issue I have with organizing this stuff. Even if I move chapter by chapter, there's just so much to keep track of. Thanks for the suggestions.

I think I can start with the most obvious changes, such as Americanization of Japanese themes and speech dialects. The things the team can pass off as "Japanese influence" in a Californian setting are actually not so surprising, no matter how little sense it actually makes. As a resident Californian, I take that from personal experience. (It takes one to truly understand Japanifornia, after all!)

From there, I can delve into character role language and cultural references later, and whatever else I can find in an episode before I move onto the next.

I have new hope for this project. This could actually work out for once. I need to spare some time for it every week, though, if I expect it to continue at a steady pace. Whew.

Are you also going to do graphical changes / cultural observations on characters / background images too (as opposed to only working from the script)?

(Oh, and I don't get these newfangled things like Tumblr at all, but I assume you need a Tumblr account to comment at something, if possible to comment at all?)

Yeah, I'll include graphical and background changes too. It wouldn't make sense to skip out on that; they stare right in my face. I may have to get to that stuff afterward, though. I don't have an easy access to screens of both games; I just recall a lot from memory - and that's never a good idea. But what sort of "cultural observations on characters" are you referring to?

Yeah, you need an account, but you don't need to customize a blog; a default is set up for you. But, the process to customization is quick and easy anyway and highly recommended. As for "comments", they refer to people reblogging something and adding their comments in a message under what they reblog. You ought to check it for yourself to get what I'm talking about. (Also, after you sign up an account, you're immediately directed to your "dashboard", where you can check updates and manage your stuff. The actual blog page is on <yourusername.tumblr.com> and where people are directed to see your stuff.)

What I meant to write was character design (or something like that), i.e. the practice of wearing the attorney's badge, Maya's clothes, Eldoon's bowl etc. Okay, I probably didn't think it all through when I wrote that...

About those sorts of things, I'm not quite sure yet. They don't really count as "localization changes", since they're in there regardless of which language the game is set as. I'm currently taking notes of things that stand out as I read through the scripts - that is, if the localization efforts come off as odd at a glance or there are noteworthy differences between the two versions. When I'm done rushing through all the cases of one game, I think I could return to revisit some loose ends and place them in proper perspective.

On a different note, I've always longed for the existence of a blog featuring Gyakuten Saiban characters teaching or offering advice to students studying Japanese. I don't think I have the time or resources to create another blog for that stuff, but it's something I've long been considering. After all, if no one else is bothering, maybe I could... as soon as I figure out my way around customizing my current blog and other things on my dashboard. If anyone reading this wants to move forward with this wish of mine, I'd ~~worship you like a God~~ follow it faithfully.

Of course, this could be asking for a little too much, so I won't be surprised if this stays only as a dream.

Regarding the changed blog theme: not sure if you meant it to be like this, but it's kinda impossible to see the tags now because it's white on white :/

(And as a fellow blogger on topics that don't need to be timely: I usually just write a lot of posts if I have a free day, and then allow the posts to go online automatically. This month is going especially well, with me having written more than double the amount of post I aim at every month in just the first two days of April. Then again, four posts a month is not very ambitious, maybe.)

Yeah, I noticed. Usually scrolling over the tags area would highlight each tag, so it's not a big issue. Still, for your and others' convenience, I've changed the color of the tags to black. Thanks for letting me know.

I think you might be overthinking the whole ニッポンのオバチャン thing. I've alway just read it as a reference to precisely what it says it is: The Idealized Elderly Japanese Woman Enjoying Her Tea Outside (C). That's why Mayoi is talking about 風情.

If you look for the term on Google, you'll also find lots of people using it to denote the stereotype, though usually in a more negative fashion (the chatty middle/elderly Japanese woman who loves minding other people's business, etc)

Of course, if we'd take the contemporary Osaka variant of ニッポンのオバチャン, then we'd have seen her with an apron and a sun-visor on, and an umbrella-holder attached to her bicycle which was packed with leeks.

I just want to say that I'm very interested in this project and it's incredibly inspiring the amount of work you're putting into it. I'm actually holding off on replaying the series because I don't want everything to be repetitive when I'm rereading it

Thanks! I really enjoy taking some time off rereading through the scripts for an extra taste of nostalgia. Despite all the things I can complain about in a game, you can't really hate it once you recall the parts that are done very well.

With the start of school, I can't spend as much time on them as I'd like, but at least I can still keep it going with something every week.

Speaking of which, I'm glad to have finally finished reviewing the next of Maya's lessons. You'd think a little side project like that would be just the bonus, but I think it's coming to be the primary entry! The likes keep coming in, so thank you all for your support! Whew, I'm bushed.

Yaaaay, I finally updated my side project. Each one of those takes a lot longer because I have so much to study up on, especially history... and I'm terrible with deciding on the right stuff to post sometimes.

Now I probably should get to work on my actual homework. Thankfully, I still have some time over the weekends... and I mean that for my homework AND this blog. Aren't you guys grateful? ;)

Karuma Gou's "Gou" is just what it is, the single word that means karma (you named some compound words). In truth, Karuma Gou is just the same words in a row, like Kamen☆Mask or Mayonaka no Midnight.

Namakura Yukio comes from 鈍ら -> dull (vs. 御剣). I think I read somewhere that Yukio was just a name Takumi Shuu liked or something like that.

Aw. The, "No, please. I'm already overwhelmed by our choices" and "I can't make up my mind either...for the totally opposite reason" statements are two of my favorite. I was also thinking we'd get some unique von Karma dialogue :sadshoe:

Anyway, good job. I'm just wondering if GS1 is the only game you're going to cover? Do you plan on doing more?

One of my favorite lines from VK is coming up. I'm gonna get to it soon.

I'm planning to keep going through the trilogy and GS4, and maybe GK1. Only time will tell, though, and school will only get in my way.

Why not combine the two types of lessons you have now, into something like you see in textbooks? I.e., a story section, and a section where you explain the grammar / words you used in the story.

あ、あれ？うう、やっぱりミスがいるのか・・・ Don't worry about it. Since I'm still learning a few things, I tend to get the feeling that I've missed something... ~~or perhaps I've left them in there on purpose to see how someone could correct them~~ I'm such a dork.

I've considered the idea, and it could definitely work. Maybe I could slip in the explanatory bits after every one or two segments? They're each pretty short, now that I think about it. Now if I could just figure out where to take the plot... it literally popped into my head one day.
