J-pop is plastic manufactured boy bands and talentless "idols", anime opening and ending music is more often than not just the Japanese music industry trying to push singles for their own worthless bands, and L'Arc-en-Ciel sucks so let's talk about everything else here.

Tipographica is an avant-garde jazz outfit that kicks insane amounts of ass, Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden is a related jazz supergroup that is equally impressive, Acid Mothers Temple are psychadelic noise collective, OGRE YOU ASSHOLE is post-punk, Agata Morio & Kazuki Tomokawa are psychadelic folk, Asakawa Maki is a gin-n-cigarettes noir jazz singer, and Sambomaster is just straight-up passionate rock and roll

There's a huge broad spectrum that doesn't have to just be "pretty boy bands", so let the education begin

My knowledge of Japanese music is purely that of shitty (and occasionally awesome) anime theme music.

Really, the only thing I've ever really attempted to listen to as just music was Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. The only reason I know about them is because some friends of mine lied about going to see them so they could go see something else. The only reason I ever attempted to listen to them was because of a conversation a had with one of my friends who likes ska in which I said "You know that song from Good Burger? Wasn't it Ska? I think that's like the best ska song ever." To which he replied "That's a song by Less Than Jake and I don't think I can continue being your friend if you continue to have that opinion." So, I remembered those guys, looked them up and decided on a new best ska song ever to save a friendship. They were kinda cool.

The End.

Topic contribution.

The majority of Japanese music sucks as does the majority of American music and the majority of British music. gg

On-topic: toe is the best. I'm also a fan of visual-kei bands like LUNA SEA and *gasp* Malice Mizer, but not many people seem to appreciate my taste in that regard. 8U

EDIT: Also see my Nujabes post in the hip-hop thread.

EDIT EDIT: Probably not the type of jazz you're thinking of but I have a soft spot for stuff like Kyoto Jazz Massive.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: For the sake of this topic I'm pretending Yellow Magic Orchestra don't exist dohoho

How is this different from jazz anywhere else, really?

Also it wasn't really very special.

You know, I noticed that the least crappy-sounding Japanese bands have the weirdest names?
Maximum the Hormone, Buck-Tick, Bump of Chicken etc...

L'arc-en-Ciel, I liked a few songs, but I hate how almost ALL OF HYDE'S MUSIC SOUNDS THE SAME.

Whether he's solo, in L'arc-en-Ciel, or with that new group VAMPS, all his songs have that same repetitive sound. He's like the Ace of Base of j-rock.

And yet my friend who's obsessed can't get enough of him because he's "LIEK OMG SO HAWT~"

I think I've got maybe...three groups/people in J-music I listen to incredibly often, nevermind all the anime stuff.

-B'z
-Gackt
-Kotani Kinya Nevermind that this ultimately came from Gravitation...

You mean that mystical instrument called "the guitar"? Don't worry! If you listen very closely, you can even hear the magical sound of "drums", "bass" and even "vocals".

Hahahaha. Nice.

I meant that the chorus in his songs all sound similar.
'LET'S SIIIIIIIIIIIING A WOOOOOOOORD AND EXTENNNNNNNNND ITTT"

Maybe the comparison shouldn't of been Ace of Base, it should've been Nickelback.

You mean he also sings for an artist that is miles ahead of him?

I'm completely out of the loop on my J-(musical stylings here) 'cause I used to get those mostly by way of Nip, the show centering on Japanese music on the student radio, and since I don't listen to the radio as much as I used to (aside from La Swompe, Va Chercher le Fusil and the Palmarès) well yeah.

C.GHoly: Man, Kou Shibasaki doesn't belong here. She's just as manufactured as all the other Japanese actress/singers.

EDIT: And what's up with the mentioning of Gackt and Hyde in here? This is supposed to be about pretentious underground Japanese music talk..that's even more pretentious than visual kei fans.

Oh yeah, Guitar Wolf when Bass Wolf was still alive. How could I forget them? (Granted their style pretty much never changes, but they're still very fun)

Other than Boom Boom Satellites, all of my Japanese music was either sent to me by my boyfriend, or I just took it from some anime sound track.

OMG! I love Luna Sea, Malice Mizer, Buck Tick, and Dir en Grey! And sorry to go mainstream here, but I love Jyongri's voice. It reminds me of Amy Lee's.

Just because. I could make a music thread all about IRELAND too, or any country really. You're free to do so.

I'll bump this thread a bit (there's no activity around here anyways), because I just found an amazing japanese band, Bi Kyo Ran. 70s King Crimson-style prog rock, wanky as hell but definetly worth listening to.
