OK, playing by listening.
How the hell do you do that?
I feel like an idiot because I can't work out all those notes just by listening to a song
:sadshoe:

Get better at your instrument.

I could play it all day long and still not get anywhere.
Seriously, I've been playing piano for 7 years now.

*shrugs* Some people just have a talent for playing instruments by ear.

But really, it's probably best if you take lessons first.

Or learn how to read a chart.

It's always come natural to me, I think. I've been learning songs by ear on piano since I was like 6 or so, and when I picked up guitar, I've been doing it that way as well~ :0

Perfect pitch, knowledge of the instrument, natural talent. I wish I could do that though.

correction, PRACTICE. perfect pitch is overrated.

That is true.

I sometimes can do it, but sometimes I can't. It does take a little practice and a lot of patience. Some people have it naturally (I don't, but I REALLY wished I did). Others, like me, simply learn best by written music. I know people who can learn songs great by ear but have a very hard time reading music. It's give and take.

What I usually do is, if you're trying to learn to play the melody of a song on the piano (just like the treble staff or something), try to sing the part to yourself and pound it out that way. Takes a while, but once you figure out the key and pattern, you'll get it. Now, trying to improvise the harmony/chords/whatever can be difficult (something that I haven't perfected) but you can either utilize your knowledge for the chord types (tonic, dominant, sub-dominant, etc.) to figure out which one is most likely used or simply try to guess and see which one "sounds" better (though this can sometimes be a little weird at first)

*sigh* sorry for the wall of text :payne:

I can do the opening of that movie about horses ... y'know, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron? 8D i think it's just a natural thing ... i ususally find a note that fits with the opening note, and play it from there. Thats how i got Cabin Music(Due South) on the guitar. I dunno if you can learn it ... :meekins:

You can learn to get perfect pitch, which can help sometimes. Or, at least, you can learn to recognize notes without use of an instrument (something I have yet to learn *grumble grumble*)

One of my best friends can do that. AND she's deaf in one ear. O.O

Yea, it's pretty cool.

When you really want to get a song, sing a note, then match the pitch with your instrument. Then, when you do that for all the notes in the phrase, put it together and then play the whole phrase. It can take a while sometimes, but it works.

I think once you know the first note, a chunk just seems to come to you nicely.

That's pretty much how it is for me.

Same for me, but sometimes if I have trouble, I use the technique I stated.

If any of you can whistle, you know how you just naturally know whether to go up or down? You can't see the inside of your mouth, how your lips are forming, your tongue position, etc. It just comes naturally.

It's like that with playing by ear once you know your instrument well.

Post subject:  Re: playing by listening

Yeah... You just gotta practice.

It doesn't come naturally to me, but I can usually get a melody... given enough time T_T I can't recognize chords for the life of me, though. And there's usually one little bit that I just can't figure out in the meloty :sadshoe:

btw, it is easiest to figure something BY FAR on the piano. (Unless you have perfect pitch. Then you could just listen to it/sing it and recognize the notes xD)

I find it helps if you learn basic chord progressions and scales. Then it is easier to figure out what pattern is being used in a song. Many songs, particularly pop songs, use notes in the same scale pattern and just shift from key to key.
